Hello from the Gillespies offers a warm hearted, funny and sometimes poignant glimpse into family life. When Angela's letter makes all their secrets public, the fall out for the family, which includes her husband Nick, their adult daughters Genevieve, Victoria and Lindy and ten year old son Ig, is mixed. As they struggle to come to grips with the truths laid bare, an unexpected twist in the tale challenges the very foundation of the Gillespie family.
McIereny's characters are appealing and believable. As a wife and mother, I identified with Angela's frustrations and concerns. It is a rare woman I suspect who hasn't at least once wondered 'what if?' Perhaps my only niggle is that I felt the adult daughters behaved in ways more appropriate for twenty something rather than thirty something year old's (I don't have a lot of patience for the adultescent trend). However, the situations the characters find themselves in ring true, albeit slightly exaggerated, as do the dynamics between the family members.
Despite its length, the story had no trouble keeping my attention with several twists to the plot keeping it interesting, though the conclusion was predictable. The writing is accessible with natural dialogue. The settings, which includes the Gillespie station and brief glimpses of Ireland, London, New York and Adelaide, are authentically portrayed.
A heartfelt, witty and perceptive story about family, friendship and love, Hello from the Gillespies is an entertaining and charming read.

Two hours later, Jax stands trembling on the roads edge, the man's gun in her hand, surrounded by police, and trying to understand what just happened. Brendan Walsh, her abductor, is dead, and Jax is wondering how much of what he told her during their crazed journey is true. The investigating detective seems certain that Brendan's ravings can be dismissed as the paranoid delusions of a soldier suffering PTSD but Jax, a journalist, isn't so sure. She needs answers... but the questions she is asking may prove deadly.
Thrilling from the very first page, Already Dead, is an exciting tale of suspense. I read it in a single sitting, absorbed by the intensity of emotion, the fast paced action and the complex characterisation.
Jax is an interesting protagonist. Still struggling with her husband's unsolved murder barely 12 months earlier, it is because she has no answers about his death that she becomes obsessed with investigating Brendan's. Ford brilliantly captures Jax's vacillating emotions through out the story creating a believable and appealing character who draws on her instincts and inner strength to expose the truth.
Ford's exploration of the issues associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Already Dead gives added depth to this work of crime fiction. Walsh has struggled to readjust to civilian life after two tours in Afghanistan and people are quick blame PTSD for his accusations. Jax, in the wake of the abduction, is also suffering from the disorder's symptoms - nightmares and anxiety, exacerbated by her still fresh grief and a history of tragedy. After her ordeal Jax, and Detective Aiden Hawke, are quick to dismiss her continuing sense of unease as a reaction to the stress, allowing events to quickly spiral out of control.
Well crafted with page turning appeal, Jaye Ford's fourth novel, Already Dead, is a gripping psychological thriller. You will never feel safe idling at traffic lights again.

The dual narratives of Lyrebird Hill weave a captivating and complex tale as the mysteries surrounding Jamie's and Brenna's fate unravel. The atmosphere darkens as secrets are revealed and danger lurks. There is unspeakable violence, bitter regrets and shocking treachery but also a thread of redemption, of truth and even triumph.
The prose is lush and lyrical evoking both the landscape of Lyrebird Hill and the fraught emotions of Romer's characters. There are distinct modern gothic undertones to the story, with a hint of fairytale morality. I did find the pacing a little slow, more so in the contemporary timeline, but the stunning twists presented in the conclusion of both narratives easily compensate for the small lag.
An absorbing and atmospheric tale, beautifully told, I enjoyed Lyrebird Hill and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. (less)

As Lisa's husband of 20 plus years delivers a speech honouring her, an extravagant arrangement of roses is delivered and Lisa reaches for the card, only to learn the bouquet was intended for Jake's mistress. With her life in shambles, Lisa decides to return to Australia and to reclaim her ancestral home in the Victorian countryside. Trumperton Manor, nicknamed Tumbledown Manor by the locals, isn't in great shape but Lisa is eager to make it her home despite flood, fire, family secrets, a feral cat and an overly familiar landscaper.
The themes of Tumbledown Manor mainly focus on family, love, acceptance and moving on as the plot centers around Lisa's desire to make a new life for herself by renovating Tumbledown Manor. There is plenty of humour, a surplus of family drama, a touch of romance and a hint of mystery surrounding a past death in the manor's stables, which eventually exposes a dark family secret.
I have to admit I wasn't particularly fond of Lisa. While I sympathised with her over her marriage collapse, I thought her to be a prickly and somewhat self absorbed character who didn't demonstrate the personal change I was expecting. I think several characters (eg Portia, Zack and Aunt Caroline) could have been dispensed with to give Lisa more opportunity to grow, and their absence wouldn't have been noticed. I did like the laconic charm of Scott, the local landscaper/handyman who serves as the romantic interest, and is a fount of patience where Lisa is concerned. I also liked Ted and his flatmate James. My favourite characters were Mojo (the feral cat) and Kiwi (the cockatoo) who steal the limelight in every scene they appear in.
I was a little disappointed that the bulk of the renovations to the manor take place in the background. There are brief mentions of uncovering flagstones, furniture shopping and the 'Grey Army' being up and down ladders in between eating egg sandwiches but there is no real sense of the house being bought back to life, though the grounds get some attention.
Despite the appealing premise and some engaging scenes and characters unfortunately, Tumbledown Manor wasn't much more than an okay read for me. (less)

As the book opens we learn that Cass has taken the leap and left home, securing a teacher's position at a college in Adelaide. Cass is hoping for a fresh start but during her very first lesson she is recognised by her students and almost immediately becomes a target of gossip and derision. Ed is conspicuously absent, it seems their romance stalled in the intervening months, though we soon learn that Ed is also in Adelaide, working with a local command on a year long secondment, and when Cass's car is painted in blood with 'Freak' scrawled across the windshield he is the first person she calls. Thrown together as Cass's stalker grows more violent, Cass is inevitably drawn into Ed's latest case - a search for a serial killer.
Though I still really like concept of this series I was disappointed by the execution of this novel. I had issues with the uneven pacing and with what I felt were several underdeveloped elements in the plot. There was too much focus on the mundane details of Ed's often circular investigation, and the obnoxiousness of his new partner. The identification of the stalker taunting Cass seemed come from nowhere since he barely rated a mention in the story.
The killer did have an interesting story and his motivations were suitably dark and twisted. There were moments of high tension, though much of the real action is crammed into the last few chapters when Cass is once again at the mercy of an insane murderer.
Despite the flaws in Craven I am still intrigued by the potential of this series and I hope Casey regains her footing in the third installment.(less)

It is the first book in a series to feature Cass Lehman, a woman with the psychic gift of retrocognition, and South Australian police detective, Ed Dyson.
For almost a decade, Cass Lehman has lived more or less like a recluse in the home she shares with her mother and grandmother. Travel is difficult when her gift of retrocognition means that when she passes over a place where someone has died in a violent or traumatic manner, Cass experiences their final horrifying moments. Now twenty eight and tired of her self imposed exile, Cass decides it is time to confront her demons and takes a huge risk by offering her services to the local police department after a woman is found murdered in an alleyway. The lead detective on the case, Ed Dyson, is scornful until Cass makes the connection between a handful of missing person cases and murders that has eluded Dyson for years, and the pair find themselves on the trail of a serial killer.
Cass's ability is intriguing, and can be viewed as both a gift and a curse. She pays a high price for her 'gift', since she not only sees and hears what the victims experienced but also feels the physical pain and emotional trauma they suffered. I really like that Cass's talent isn't always useful, since Cass can only see what the victim saw in their last moments when the killer strikes from behind, for example, she isn't able to offer much to a investigation.
The initial partnership between Cass and Ed is not an easy one. Ed is still struggling with the unsolved disappearance of his pregnant wife two years previously and doesn't have the patience to humour Cass given his skepticism. Cass resents Ed's easy dismissal of her, both because she believes she can help and because she is attracted to the detective.
Casey alternates between the first person perspective of Cass and third person perspectives from Ed, and the killer the pair are hunting. It's an unusual narrative split but works well and I barely noticed the transitions. The plot is well crafted, and crucially Casey doesn't allow the paranormal element to overwhelm the structure of a good crime novel. The pacing of the story is good with a tense, and somewhat gruesome, climatic ending that threatens the lives of both the protagonists.
Combining crime fiction with an interesting paranormal element and a touch of romance, I really enjoyed reading Hindsight. I'd particularly recommend it those who find the genre mix appealing and who might have liked Charlaine Harris's Harper Connelly series. I'm looking forward to following Hindsight up with Casey's second book, Craven. (less)
Rain Dance is an enjoyable Australian rural romance for an young adult audience from accomplished author, Karen Wood.
When the Harvey family loses their house to the bank, they are forced to relocate from their coastal home to an isolated property in Gunnedah to fulfil a temporary building contract. Fifteen year old Holly, along with her two older brothers, Brandon and Jake, and younger sister, Eva, have no option but to make the best of the situation but she can't imagine ever considering the arid land home.
Seventeen year old Kaydon Armstrong is shocked when he returns home from boarding school for the holidays to learn his father has made a deal with an investor to expand their cattle farm. Given the current drought conditions, Kaydon is suspicious of the investor's motives but his father isn't interested in his doubts and is determined for the deal to go through.
Rain Dance is an engaging story set in Gunnedah, a regional area in New South Wales. There is a sweet romance that develops between teenagers Holly, a vegetarian, and Kaydon, a fifth generation cattle farmer, action packed scenes when an accidental fire sparks and threatens Holly and her family, and a touch of intrigue when it becomes obvious the investor willing to bankroll the Armstrong's plans for expansion has his own agenda.
While Rain Dance is aimed at a young adult audience Wood doesn't shy away from illustrating the realities of life. She explores the affect of the financial crisis through the Harvey family's losses, the emotional and financial strain drought has placed on regional farmers and raises the environmental risks of mining. Wood also examines some difficult themes through some of the minor characters. Kaydon's best friend Dan has been struggling since the death of his father in a farming accident. Dan's mother has been unable to maintain the farm and, with the family on the verge of losing everything while the insurance company delays payment, Dan is growing increasingly desperate. Jake, Holly's brother, has admitted to being gay and is feeling lonely, and Holly's mother has just been diagnosed with cancer, with the only treatment available hundreds of kilometers away.
With appealing characters, a strong sense of place and a well crafted plot, Rain Dance is a lovely read. I'd recommend it for adult fans of the rural romance genre to share with the teens (age 12 and up) in their life.(less)

After a spectacular career ending crash, former V8 Supercar driver Billy Hotchkiss joined the police force hoping for opportunities to sate his craving for the adrenalin rush racing once gave him and when he stumbles across a diamond heist in action, he doesn't hesitate to jump into the fray. Billy's heroics captures the attention of Interpol who think he is the ideal candidate to track down the diamond thieves, convinced the Melbourne heist is connected to a series of diamond thefts by a crew associated with the Formula 1 World Championship. Billy, along with his reluctant partner, Claude, is sent in undercover, joining the 'Iron Rhino' racing team, and they begin closing in on the criminals, only to uncover an explosive secret. Suddenly, Billy and Claude find themselves racing along the streets of Monte Carlo to save thousands of spectators before everything crashes and burns.
Though I am not generally a fan of motor sport, I was caught up in the fast paced excitement from the opening pages of Quick. From Billy's spectacular crash on Mount Panorama to his surfing an armoured truck being dragged down Melbourne's busy streets and later sliding down the roof of the Mall of Emirates while being chased by a Uzi wielding diamond thief, the action is non stop both on and off the track. There are explosions, gunfights, car chases and car races, plus a black panther and a damsel in distress.
Worland's fearless hero, Billy, is a likeable protagonist, forthright with a dry Aussie sense of humour. He misses the adrenaline rush of racing and, having survived a near fatal accident, isn't afraid to take risks as he tries to stop 'The Three Champions' in their tracks. Billy is teamed with veteran Interpol agent Claude, a dour Frenchman who is initially unhappy with the assignment and his reckless new partner, but eventually see's things Billy's way.
I compared Worland's Velocity to Con Air and Combustion to Die Hard 4, Quick could perhaps be described as a cross between The Fast and the Furious and Speed Racer, but there really isn't anything quite like this on the big screen and there probably should be.
Quick is the perfect Father's Day gift for race fans or anyone who appreciates a rip-roaring and racy adventure thriller. Take Quick for a spin, and enjoy!

Rachael's Gift unfolds from the alternating perspectives of husband and wife, Camille, a high-strung art historian who investigates the provenance of artwork, and once dreamed of being a famous painter, and Wolfe, an easygoing Aussie bloke who surfs every morning and shapes surfboards in his garage, who are the loving parents of Rachael. Fourteen year old Rachael, precocious and charming, is a gifted artist and Camille is determined to protect the future she has envisioned for her daughter at any cost. Wolfe is proud of Rachael's talent but is increasingly concerned about his daughter's gift for lying, especially when she accuses a teacher at her prestigious private school of sexual misconduct.
"She shook her head in disbelief, 'You're going to ruin her. Don't you realise? I can't let you do it.' Her chest heaved and then some kind of realisation dawned in her face. Unwilling to compromise, Camille flees with Rachael from their Sydney home to Paris, ostensibly to attend a family memorial service for her recently deceased mother, and to further investigate the provenance of a painting at the center of a dispute, but also with the hope she can wrangle Rachael an interview at the prestigious Beaux-Arts Institute. In Paris, Camille is faced with truths she would rather ignore and lies she has forgot she has told, but her focus is Rachael and she must decide what she is willing to sacrifice for the chance of her daughter's success.
Meanwhile Wolfe, who arrives home to find his wife and daughter have fled without a word of warning, is left to cope with the fall out as word leaks of Rachael's allegations. Wolfe is reluctant to believe his daughter would go so far as to ruin a man's life with spurious allegations, but he can no longer ignore the evidence that suggests it is not only his daughter is a liar, but his wife too.
The protagonist's of Rachael's Gift are skillfully drawn and developed. Rachael is not unlike a modern day Lolita, whose age belies her innocence. Cameron portrays Camille's and Wolfe's emotional upheaval with authenticity. I sided with Wolfe in his arguments with Camille but as a mother I also understood her instinct to support her daughter.
Cameron also raises some of the modern concerns of parenting such as cyber-bullying, sexual predation and the narcissism of youth, and questions the choices parent have in an era where they are expected to protect their children from the consequences of their own behaviour and to support their ambitions without censure.
The pacing is perfect. There is increasing tension as the situation in Sydney spirals out of control and as the relationship between Camille and Rachael begins to fracture in Paris. The conclusion is startling in its honesty.
Part domestic drama, part psychological suspense this is a compelling read and an impressive novel from debut Australian author, Alexandra Cameron.

I have written and rewritten my thoughts about Can You Keep A Secret? a half a dozen times and still can't pull together anything cohesive.
I think it is because I didn't like it for reasons that are purely emotive. I know that when I finished the last page I dropped my Kindle in a mixture of frustration and incredulity. Some sort of trust had been broken between the author and myself that I can only partially attribute to the protagonist's 'secret', and feels too complicated to explain. (less)

When she is employed by the wealthy Raimund Blacard to recover La Tasse due Chevalier Gris, 'The Cup of the Grey Knight', she is one step closer to realising her dream and silencing her detractors, for etched around the rim is a clue to legendary sword's location. For centuries the descendants of one of Charlemagne's most trusted aides, Guy of Nabonne, have been the guardians of Durendal but in the 14th century its hiding place was lost. Foreign Legion Captain Raimund Blacard is the last of his family line and he is determined to recover the sword before his murderous rival Gaston, and to Olivia's horror, destroy it.
In part, The French Prize is an Indiana Jones style treasure hunt for a lost relic as Olivia and Raimund search for the clues that will lead them to Durendal. The sword, and the legends of Roland and Charlemagne, are historical facts which have been incorporated into the story and then blended with Hein's imagination.
If I am honest the romance was a touch heavy for me personally with all the yearning and the brooding, it didn't quite overwhelm the plot but I did feel like it threatened to on occasion. That said, the chemistry, relationship development and conflict between Olivia and Raimund was believable within the context of the story.
Olivia, as a passionate historian who has chased the legend of Durendal for most of her life, is horrified by Raimund's plans to destroy the sword and hopes to convince him to spare it. She naively refuses to let the hunt go, even with Gaston posing a very real threat, but proves capable and resourceful. Raimund is all about duty and honour but his elder brother's murder at the hands of Gaston has him swearing to destroy the sword, despite his family's legacy of guardianship. Grieving and weary, he sees himself as cursed which is why he rebuffs Olivia despite their obvious mutual attraction.
Hein's settings are nicely realised, from the landscape of the French countryside to the hidden room storing Raimund's family treasures, her characters are well drawn and the plot is neatly crafted. Combining romance with well paced action and suspense, The French Prize is an engaging novel. (less)

Frustrated by an acting career going no where, and heartbroken after finding her boyfriend in bed (well on a coffee table to be more accurate) with her best friend, when Rhiannon Dee discovers an abandoned, rundown theater in the small town of Hamlet she decides to reopen it. The Hamlet Majestic has stood empty for almost thirty years, after a ceiling collapse resulted in the tragic death of the former owner, Kip Daniels, during the opening night performance of Shakespeare's Hamlet. His son, Tad, who inherited the property seems to have mixed feelings about the project but Rhi, despite Tad's weirdness, and the objections of her witch of a mother, is determined to restore the Majestic to its former glory and breathe new life into Hamlet's theater.
Hamlet's Ghost is a lighthearted contemporary romance with a hint of mystery, and a paranormal twist.
Rhi is a witch, and though she is determined to disown her heritage in order to disassociate herself from her teenage role as 'Witchlet' and escape her mother's overbearing influence, she learns there is no escaping who you are. I liked Rhi a lot, she refuses to wallow in self pity despite recent events and is determined to make a success of the theater. To do so she has to figure out how to help the former owner, Kip, who haunts the premises, move on.
But there is more than simply unfinished business keeping Kip earthbound, additional drama stems from the surprising links between Rhi's mother, local cafe owner/tarot card reader Crystal, and the ghost. A major theme of the book is the need to make peace with the past, applicable not only to Kip but also several other of the main characters, including Rhi and Tad.
The misunderstandings that keep Rhi and Tad apart during much of the novel stem from an unusual situation. I don't want to give too much away so lets just say a case of mistaken identity plays havoc with their developing attraction. While secondary love-match plots also play out for two of the characters in this story, Annie is torn between two men and Tye is waiting for the man of her dreams, surprisingly I didn't feel the romance, though an important element, overwhelmed the story.
A bewitching read, Hamlet's Ghost is charming and often funny story with appealing characters and a feel-good ending. (less)

The Jenson home quickly becomes a haven for twelve year old Freya and the neighborhood boys, Avery, Garrick and brothers Syd and Declan, eager to escape their working class homes marred by violence, poverty and neglect, but before long the boys sense something is not quite right, and the golden aura of the Jensons begins to tarnish.
Golden Boys is set in the early to mid 1970's, in an outer suburban locale, a landscape familiar to readers who freely roamed their neighborhood during long summer days. It explores the complex dynamics of family, childhood and friendship, and the disquieting undercurrent of violence and abuse seething beneath their ordinary facade.
Freya Kiley, struggling to understand her large family's dynamic, sees Rex Jenson as a possible saviour, but her brother's, Declan and Syd, begin to sense Rex is not quite what he seems. Colt is all too aware of his father's failings but at a loss as to how to admit, or cope with them. Garrick has no such hesitation, the neighborhood bully, he, like most children, is simply certain that someone has to pay for doing wrong by him.

Mema is twenty two but, having spent most of her life isolated from wider society, has an innocence more befitting a young teenager, happiest running barefoot in the rain with her only friend, Anja, or watching the sky lighten at dawn. She is not uneducated but is unworldly, with little curiosity about what lies beyond the boundary of the family property. She is naive but not unknowing, aware of her mother's reputation for promiscuity, but uninterested in men or relationships. But everything begins to change for Mema when rescues a stranger, Hamish, from the flooded creek and slowly her 'unknowns become knowns'.

Deeper Water beautifully explores Mema's belated coming-of-age, her growing awareness of herself, of her desires, and of what the outside world may have to offer her. Mema is a richly drawn character struggling with the emotional changes Hamish's presence awakens, and the way they affect her relationships, with her family, Anja and a neighbour, Billy, in particular.
Deeper Water is also about connection, or the lack there of. Mema is intimately connected to the landscape in which she lives, and the family she loves, but divorced from the wider world. Hamish, despite being horrified by Mema's lack of internet and mobile access, can claim no real anchor, and despite his environmental credentials, has little connection to the land.
The landscape in which Deeper Water is set has character of its own and is brought to life by Cole's evocative descriptions.
"At dusk the creek takes on a certain colour. velvety brown. Without the dapples sunshine, its depths are muted and mysterious and all the creatures seem to come to the surface. The catfish linger on their nests and the eels float by like black ribbons. The turtles perch on the flats of exposed rocks and the kingfishers fly past like the brightest of tailsmans."
With its simple yet elegant prose, and quiet yet deeply felt emotion, Deeper Water is a mesmerising story about a woman's awakening to the possibilities of love and life.(less)

Butler begins with the Haitch vs Aitch debate (my maternal grandmother in particular would have been horrified had I ever pronounced the letter H as 'Haitch') and goes on to explore other topics like Capitalisation, Internet gibberish, The attraction of slang and How do words get into the dictionary?
Butler is not without a sense of humour which these essays also reflect with subjects that include, Should man boobs be in the dictionary?, The mystery of the bogan, and her recommendation that we adopt Canadian spelling as an international standard over British or American English.
I was most impressed, and feel somewhat vindicated, to learn that Butler considers (and history proves) the apostrophe to be 'an artifice of writing, a grammarian's flourish' and actually advocates that we forgo it entirely given it is possible to do so without any effect on our comprehension of written language. Ive often thought its true, and shes right, isnt she?
An ideal gift for language lovers, or pedantics, grammar Nazi's or wordsmiths, The Aitch Factor is an entertaining and illuminating treatise on the ever evolving landscape of language.
