This was a good read, and the only reason it took me so long to finish it was the size of the book, which made it an impossible task to take it with me outside (I barely have time to read at home).
There was a lot of character development, a well thought-out plot and a story that was tied up in the best possible way. It wasn't very predictable, which was good, and all the characters were well presented and interesting. ...more
A good fantasy book, for teens and for adults (especially those who like the elemental magic, like me). With great world-building, good characters, captivating prose and a few good twists, even if the center of the plot isn't very original, the author makes it his own and goes pasta few steriotypes, that are usually common in this type of literature. ...more
"Pela Sombra Morrerão",by Carla Ribeiro A good and creepy story, that, with each page, gives a sense of hopelessness that reminds us of the vampires of old times. Even the prose is adequate with the old ways. The only real bad thing about this story is the ammount of 'explanation' the author decides to give us through dialogues that sound unantural and, sometimes, unecessary.
"Golfinho de Júpiter", by Mary Rosenblum I really loved this one, from the first page onwards. It's a beautiful story with great charcaters and just the sweetest of realizations....more

This is an anthology with some good stories and a few bad ones. But the outcome is compensatory, especially because the authors don't 'stick' with the original vampire myth, but introduce new and fascinating views into the legend.
The best short stories were: - "Uma noite em Luddenden", de Hélia Correia; - "Vlad, o empalador", de João Tordo; - "Exangue", de Miguel Esteves Cardoso;
Note: The cover is hideous. I know you can't judge a book by its cover, but this one ... this one creeps me out (in a very bad way)...more

A small book with a lot of stories in it. A book for those who love reading, for the ones who love books and how they "suck you in".
I loved the "real" characters and their interactions, but I felt like the "fictional" characters lacked depth and something that made them unique, They all seemded the same, in their actions and speeches, which was a disappoinment.
Still, it was a nice and fast read that I reccommend....more

As a mistery, this book wins! It's been a while since a mistery left me clueless as to who the murder was. And it's not that the pieces aren't there, but that the author plays them so well, we end up supecting everyone, except the real murderer. It was kind of fun, actually, to do this 'mind-game'.
My only three problems with this book were: Hammond. Alez and the sex.
Still, this was a very enjoyable read, and that's saying a lot, considering I'm not a fan of the genre. I'll definetly read something else of this author in the future.
Note: I won this book through First-Reads, and the author sent me the book and a book-marker, both autographed. Thank you!

The book started with a little cliché, and then evolved into something enthralling and engaging, showing great world-building and the prospects of a great story. Somehow, along the way (past the middle stage) the book seemed to loose its focus and became generic. The dialogues lost strength, immersing in more clichés. Too many questions were lifted, none was answered.
In terms of characters, both Gabriel and Laura are strong protagonists with their own ideals and acting in accordance to their beliefs, but aside from them, all other characters were just ... bidemensional and forgetful.
The story shows promisse, but the second half of the book was a disappointment. I'll read the next installment hoping it anwers a lot, and the plot doens't loose itself again....more

Once more João Barreiros proved that he is indeed one of the greatest portuguese writers (not only in the science-fiction department).
Even though the story has a few minor flaws, the use he made of the characters, the way the story was told, and the overall writing, was just amazing and I couldn't take my eyes away from the pages....more
The story is competent although straight-forward. The characters are the book's strong point as the author chose to give everyone equal time 'on stage', presenting the reader with a big array of tridimensional personalities that make it impossible not to want to read the sequel. The writer's prose works well in the acton scenes and in dialogues, but sometimes it uses too much "tell" and too little "show". Also it's impossible not to notice how the author uses both the present tense and past perfect in the same sentence. Speaking of that, the book is filled with mistakes, clearly showing that no editor set eyes on it for a revision.
Aside from that it was an interesting story, with strong characters and great world-building. Looking forward to a sequel (with much more care on the grammar part)....more

This is probably one of the most cohesive anthologies I've read. Every short story has quality, even if some are little less than mediocre, none is bad. Which is something really hard to find in an anthology. Of course, this comes form my own tastes, and maybe other readers will feel differntly.
For me, the best short stories included are "O Retirante" by Baptista Bastos, and "O Carrinho de Mão" by Pedro Martins.
I recommend this one to fans of terror/horror, or simply to people who are curious about the genre and/or the authors included....more
