This is a novel set in post-war Germany. The main character is a fifteen year old boy who fell in love to a thirty six year old woman. The first part of the book is mostly about their sexual relationship. It is pages and pages of sex after sex after sex. What makes it different from the books I've read before is that this is about a forbidden sexual romance of a young boy and a mature woman whereas in most books it is old man and young girl. The sex scenes are written pretty well and even if it is a weird and controversial one I enjoyed reading it from the boy's point of view. (I saw the movie trailer by the way and it felt gross and wrong to see Kate Winslet's touching a teenager). The second part is about the meeting of the boy and the woman in a court room (they have been separated at the end of the first part). The woman was charged with murder because her past job was a guard of a camp. If you are familiar with the Holocaust these camps are where the German guards placed the Jews and then after some time they will kill the Jews using the gas chambers. So this is the woman's work, she was alleged to be the leader of the guards and the one who was responsible at the accident that happen. That night of the accident the church where the guards kept the Jews was bombed. The bomb caused the fire. It started on the church's roof. The Jews inside the church started yelling but the guards outside the church did not help them escape. The gates of the church remained locked. Then the Jews inside the church were burned to death. She confessed that she did not unlock the gate because she decided that it might cause panic and maybe they can't control the Jews if they open the gate. She also admitted that she's the one who wrote the report (the boy who is narrating the story will reveal that the woman can't write that report because she's illiterate). The woman chose to admit that she committed murder rather than blew her cover-up that she's illiterate. Continuation... It's hard to understand the character of this woman named Hanna. While reading it I tried to analyze why did she make that choice. I'm trying to put myself on her situation and I'm still wondering if I would do the same thing given that I love reading books. Would I chose to admit that I'm illiterate to prove my innocence? It's a hard decision but I think maybe the character believed that she will be charged guilty no matter what she say so she chose to at least retained her cover that she's literate. I only gave it three stars because I felt that the idea of the book is excellent but somehow the author didn't execute it well. I wished there are more dialogues and the characterization is more in-depth. Sometimes the narration is too lengthy and I felt like I'm distanced from the character's feelings. The monologue of the narrator is too long it felt like reading an essay rather than a novel. The author will spoon-fed the reader with a lot of ideas it makes it boring and irritating. It seems like he wants to say something but I felt lost with his words. It is false eloquence, I think the author thinks the longer he explained something the better ;p. However, I still recommend this book or (maybe watch the movie.) (less) | Notes are private!

The story involves a very interesting rape case. This is my first time reading a rape case wherein there's a big part of me who thinks that the rape victim is annoying and I am actually rooting for the rapist. The sweetheart defense is really strong and it's hard to tell who's lying and who's telling the truth. Jodi Picoult is really good at this and it really makes me think hard about what is really going on. There are a lot of twists and turns that makes the story more exciting and engaging. I already read four of her books (My Sister's Keeper, Nineteen Minutes, The Pact and the Plain Truth) and it feels good that although there are a lot of elements that are still the same I still find this one interesting from her other works. What I like about it is that the plot is well thought out compared to Plain Truth, indeed its plot is very fluid. I like the comic strip parts of the books even though they are fillers, they are nice fillers. I like the Dante's references and how it connects with the storyline. My only complaint is that I find the ending not satisfying because it lacks closure. I think Jodi Picoult's novels are limited with word count because the story is already really long and maybe she can't write the continuation anymore so it ended that way. I feel bad that there is no court drama in this novel and majority of it is focused on investigation. However, I still find this novel thought-provoking and well written. (less) | Notes are private!

The book started a bit slow. Compared to the other Jodi Picoult books that I've read (My Sister's Keeper, Nineteen Minutes, The Pact) this seems a bit dragging and you probably be bored reading the first half of the book. The thing that I don't like about it is some of the parts of the book is irrelevant and is only there as fillers. Like for example, the paranormal aspect of the story wherein Katie can see her sister Hannah's ghost in the pond. The love story of Katie and Adam is also written poorly. Also, the flashbacks are written in italics that you can hardly read it. Despite of those flaws, the second half is really interesting and fast-paced. The thing that I really look forward to is reading the court drama in every Jodi Picoult book. It makes you think hard and sometimes it's hard to not really get into it even though you know that it's just fiction. The ending of the story is probably one of the most disturbing and shocking endings that I've read. It is open-ended and it leaves a big question in the mind of its readers. Spoiler.... At the end, we learned that Katie's mom was the one who killed the baby and she confessed it to Atty. Hathaway after Katie's trial (the decision of the court: Katie is guilty but she will not be put in jail but will suffer a sort of experimental house arrest). Technically, Katie is still free despite the fact that that was the verdict (seems like a victory in the part of the defense) but after the shocking confession of Katie's mom the lawyer was put in the pressure of telling the truth or just keeping it for the sake of everybody. And the story just leave it there with a little bit of hint that the lawyer might just keep it a secret because she has developed a bond in the family.(less) | Notes are private!

Best book of the series so far. I have heard that the book series is originally intended as a trilogy, but the story became so complicated that it needs seven books to resolve all the problems and plot issues. I think that the series is really a complicated story even more complicated than Lord of the Rings. When I started the series I feel that I know who the villains and who the good guys were, but even the characters are complicated. Sometimes they are neither a villain nor a hero they are just in the middle. Lord of the Rings is a kind of story that you already know who the bad guys and the good guys were but this series is far more intriguing and there are a lot of secrets and it is just so beautifully written. At first I think that the Lannisters are the enemy, but now I'm starting to root for them, for Tyrion, Jamie, Tommen, and Myrcella. Even the characters that I thought are good people are the bad ones and the character that I thought are the bad people turned out to be the good ones. There are just too many lies that I feel that I was also mislead in some ways. And I really applaud that some of the truths are finally revealed. It was very unpredictable and I really thought that the author really think about how he will play out the story and the characters. I really recommend this series if you haven't read it yet and I would say that I know not all readers would really like the book. I think it fits more to mature readers. There are sex, violence and a lot of mature content that not really for young readers. I also say that if you are a reader who always loves happily ever after this is also not for you. If you are willing to invest time in a long series about politics, magic, and family I think this one is for you. Spoiler Alert Jon Snow ***Jon Snow is no longer a virgin. At first I was really annoyed because I want him to not break any of his vows and remain an honest brother of the Night's Watch. However, this would mean that Kit Harrington, the guy who played Jon Snow will have numerous sexy scenes *drools* so yeah never mind. Ahem. Aside from numerous sexy scenes, a lot has happened to Jon Snow. In the end he became the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. He has a power similar to Bran. He is also a wrag (or was it warg?) I'm not sure about the spelling but he can also be inside Ghost's body. I can't really tell all that happened but here are some of them: Ygrette the lovey dovey wildling he loved and has sex with was killed. Lord Mormont was killed. We know a lot about the wildlings in this book which in the past books are really a blur. There's also Janos Slynt who became a new member of the Night's Watch. King Stannis came to the wall and rescue them from the wildlings. King Stannis offer the position of Lord of Winterfell to Jon Snow. Here is the link on whom they cast as Ygritte: http://winter-is-coming.net/2011/10/r... Daenyrys ***Actually I'm starting to get bored reading Dany's chapters. Barristan the Bold joins them and she is gathering an army and the dragons are growing. She doesn't trust Jorah anymore and she kinds of get him out of her sight because he learned that Jorah betrays her at first by sending information to Robert Baratheon about her and Drogo and their son. Tyrion ***Tyrion is my favorite POV to read. His POV is always funny and interesting. My favorite parts in this book is Tyrion and Sansa's wedding it was really an interesting part to read. It is funny and painful at the same time. I think it's unfair for both of them to be wed. I think Tyrion is attracted to Sansa because Sansa is very pretty and he is very fond of the Starks and he's just this ugly but smart and kind dwarf who just wanted love and attention. Sansa on the other hand was this girl who dreams of prince charming and beautiful wedding and she unfortunately wed to an ugly dwarf and he is a Lannister. When I told my sister about it she was actually furious because she hates Sansa and she thinks Tyrion deserve a better wife than Sansa. Whereas at that moment I'm thinking the exact opposite wherein I think Sansa deserve a better husband. What happens to Tyrion: He is accused of poisoning and killing King Joeffrey. Tysha is not a whore, revealed by his brother Jamie. Jamie rescues Tyrion from his cell. He will now leave King's Landing. Arya ***Arya's POV became repetitive and less exciting. She meets a lot of characters including the Hound and Ser Benric Dondarion. At the end of the novel she will be traveling to Braavos. She got Needle back. Bran ***Another less exciting POV. He goes beyond the wall to find the Three-Eyed Crow and meeting Samwell Tarly along the way. Robb ***FUCK! Robb was fucking dead. It was really cruel how he died and it was in the hands of his alliance House Frey and it happens in a wedding that the people would call Red Wedding after the horrible murder. I've heard that this book will be two seasons season 3 and season 4. And I think it will be a great idea because Robb was killed halfway to the book and I think it would be really a dramatic ending to Season 3. And all the fans will be like I DON'T WANT TO WATCH THIS FUCKING SERIES ANYMORE! Actually that's what I feel like when I read that part. I stop reading and I was like thinking in my head NO IT DOES NOT HAPPEN and for a moment I don't want to read anymore. It's just very shocking because I'm not really expecting it because I thought if Robb will die in the books it will be at war fighting the Lannisters. I'm just wondering if the HBO series will raise the bar and will do it exactly like in the books because IMO his death is too grotesque for TV because he's beheaded and then they stitched the head of Grey Wind to his body. So it looks like Robb with a wolf head. Catelyn Stark also suffers a brutal death she was cut from ear to ear and then they throw her body naked in the river. However, at the end of the novel she came back as a zombie. Idk if that's the right term but she came back from the dead. Jamie ***I think Jamie became more likable and relatable in book 3. He lost his right hand and he can't fight anymore. I really love his POV and there's really more to Jamie than meets the eye. He's not exactly the character I thought he was in book 1. He has a heart and a very complex character. I think his only fault was loving Cersei his twin. Now I love him more. He is the antihero of the series. I really like that the two Lannister boys are both antiheroes in a way and there are very real and honest characters. Now that I finished book 3. I'm excited to know what will happen to these characters: -Sansa and Petyr -Tyrion -Jamie -Jon Snow -Brienne -Arya -Cersei -Catelyn(less) | Notes are private!

Wh...more Taken from Chapter 22 of Life of Pi "I can well imagine an atheist's last words: "White, white! L-L-Love! My God!" - and the deathbed leap of faith. Whereas the agnostic, if he stays true to his reasonable self, if he stays beholden to dry, yeastless factuality, might try to explain the warm light bathing him by saying, "Possibly a f-f-failing oxygenation of the b-b-brain," and, to the very end, lack imagination and miss the better story." This is a very typical story of faith against adversity and faith still manage to triumph in the end. What makes it unique is that Pi, the main character is a Hindu, a Christian and a Muslim at the same time. His trial of faith and survival starts when the ship that he and his family together with their animals (because they are zookeepers) sink in the Pacific. He found himself inside a lifeboat together with his animals orangutan, hyena, zebra and a tiger. It was similar to the movie Castaway, but instead of being totally alone he has animals with him. It was actually pretty similar to National Geographic and you will learn a lot about animals and their behaviors. I think this book is really informative and thought provoking and very brutal. There are scenes that are really horrendous like cannibalism, etc. However, all in all I think this is really a must read. Its get kind of weird and boring sometimes, but it's not really preachy. I think it has a lot of symbolism that I just can't interpret yet. I think the tiger and the other animals maybe symbolize something. What I learned from it is that sometimes we really need to believe in the unbelievable and believe in something, whatever religion it is. This book actually acknowledges Atheism, but not Agnosticism. I think what the author tries to point out is that better believe than doubt and just make a stand. Believe in Science if not Religion or believe in Religion than doubt both Religion and Science.(less) | Notes are private!

Also one of my friends here, Rollie, even mentioned that he liked Divergent more than the Hunger Games. And of course, I trust these people, when they say that a book is amazing, for sure I know it is true. Then I'm itching to read it, but the problem was, I've no money and I'm even finding a hard time looking for the copy at our National Bookstore. Then, came the time that we went to Mall of Asia and, we're kind of celebrating my 20th birthday and our waiting place was the National Bookstore and I've seen Divergent in the New Releases Section. I think it was really the approriate time, I've money and it's my birthday (4 days kind of late, actually) and I decided to have a birthday treat. So for those who haven't read it yet I heartily recommend it. It is a Young Adult Book. The genre is dystopian. The futuristic world in Divergent is divided into five factions... ![]() Abnegation (The Selfless)- symbol: a hand helping another hand Amity (The Peaceful)- symbol: a tree Erudite (The Intelligent)- symbol: an eye Dauntless (The Brave)- symbol: a flame *this is also the symbol in the bookcover Candor (The Honest)- symbol: scale If you want to watch the book trailer here it is: http://youtu.be/tu5Erw-posg If you're wondering what the term Divergent means it actually means that you can fit to two or more factions. You will know more about it reading the book. What I really liked about the book is the world the author has created, at first I thought it was really idealistic, but when I'm reading it, I surmised it is flawed (of course I'm reading Dystopia, you know the 101, government and system is corrupted blah blah blah) and it is also more like political so it's really thought provoking and intriguing. I also like that there's romance in this book, but there's no love triangle, so I think it's different. It's a mix of adventure, lots of fighting and there's training and simulation tests, there's mystery, there's political intrigue, there's humor, lots of violent scenes and it also has romance. So boys and girls I think would love it. I also like that there's a lot of betrayal, a lot of twists and turns and for most of the time it's not really what I expected. I've been thinking that it could be a contender for the Hunger Games, but I'm not 100% sure if this one is better since this is only the first book in the series. So my decision if Divergent is better than Hunger Games will be decided I think after reading all the books in the trilogy. PS: I think if I will have to choose for a faction, I'll be Erudite. :) Note: With spoiler, to those who have read it, just scroll down ![]() ![]() ![]() Yay spoilers ^^ The scenes that I did not expect: 1. So while reading it I never really expect that Caleb will choose to be Erudite, I knew that Beatrice will choose Dauntless because of a youtube review I've watched. 2. I was also shocked when I've learned that Beatrice's mom is a former Dauntless and she was killed in the end of the book, I thought that the author would spare her life. And even Tris' dad she had it killed at the first book. 3. Four's real identity. I thought that when at the start of the book when they're talking about Tobias and Marcus it never really crossed in my mind that that conversation would be important. And Four is Tobias and then at the end of the book he was reunited with his dad. I don't know if Marcus was really an evil character, I think we'll know more about it as the series progresses. 4. The end part of this book really came out as a shocker. There's war, there's genocide and all came out really intense and violent. There are important characters that were killed like Will and Tris killed her. Tris' mom and dad were killed. A lot of Abnegations were killed. And we don't know what will happen to Tori and Christina. 5. Two factions are left in chaos and we don't know what will happen to the Dauntless and the Abnegation. And it seems that for a while they will be factionless. I'm not also really sure what will happen in Amity and Candor if they will support the Abnegation refugees or the Erudites. I never would have thought that I'll have the chance to read this book, for the reason that I don't even know that this book exist. However, when I once again attended a meet-up by The Filipino Group in Goodreads last April 10 2011, which was also a celebration of the first anniversary of the group, Kwesi and I had the opportunity to swap books. I have given him the book 1st to Die by James Patterson and he gave this book to me, which I don't have any idea what the book is all about. But judging on the title "Godless" I have a feeling that it will delve on Religion and Atheism. Reading the backcover of it I was already fascinated, a teenage boy bored of his parent's religion (Catholicism) decided one summer to create his own religion, which was Chutengodianism, a new worship which fundamentally believe that the Town's Water Tower was the one and true God. A big part of me immediately relate to that kid. I would say that I also found going to churh, listening to priest, praying rosary, reading the bible etc. boring. Most of the time, I believe I am a non-believer, an atheist, but no I think a Skeptic is the perfect word for me. I want to believe in God but I wanted proof, I want to see it before I believe it. I find it really funny that this book is so natural. There are a lot of things the character said about Religion specifically Catholicism that are really offensive. I'm thinking if you're a believer of Christian Faith you might find it blasphemous or the book was like questioning Religion and it puts Religion on a bad state and there are a lot of the propaganda but for me it doesn't felt contrived or it doesn't felt like I was forced to believe in it. It's like here's the thing, think about it and it's not like here's the thing, believe in it. If that even makes sense. I also love that the book is very funny and sarcastic. It's like reading this, I laughed out loud and I can't stop it. I even think about it's like a long time ago a book made me feel that way. And yeah I found books that made me laugh, special. It's like a very nice friend that could lighten up your mood and will give you a stomachache for its dry wit. It's a very nice read and I really recommend it, just be open minded especially if you're a Catholic. I don't find questioning faith and God wrong or even found Atheists bad people. It's a very thought provoking and imaginative book that would really got you thinking about your own faith as well. I also find the ending of it satisfying and it's a great way to end the book. Jason, the main character ended it with an epiphany or a reflection about himself, and there is that uncertainty about him and what he really believes in, that I find amazing and haunting.(less) | Notes are private!

I love this book. It's easy to read, straight-forward and memorable. I immediately fell in love with the story because of the characters. Atticus Finch, Jem and of course Scout. It brings you back to your childhood when life is easy and you're always playing with your siblings, friends and neighbors. The time when you always look up to your parents and your parent/s will be your teacher, friend and role model. If you liked Tom Sawyer or the first half of The Book Thief you might like the first part of "To Kill a Mockingbird." To be honest, reading the middle part becomes tedious and I just want something big to happen. So, I stopped reading for a while and watched Nikita (American TV Show). After I finished that, I resumed my reading and right then I couldn't stop reading because it became really interesting. One thing that haunts me and angers me is that it doesn't end the way I liked it to be. Reading the first part, it felt like a fairy tale. I was really hoping that it will be a happy ending for Robinson. I felt like I was slapped by the author. This is the sad reality that she wanted me to read and to experience. I knew that it was obvious, the title itself is a foreshadowing. It's a tragic story of injustice and racial discrimination. I just felt really bad reading it especially the parts when a child read a current event about Adolf Hitler and what he's doing in Germany. In America the Whites discriminate the Blacks, in Germany the Germans discriminate the Jews. This book is an eye-opener and I learned a lot of things. I hope that I'll be able to treat everyone equally without prejudice and discrimination. (less) | Notes are private!

(I'm going to use Q & A style of reviewing this time) What made you pick-up the book? > I actually watched a book trailer in Youtube (the link to that vid was way down there somewhere) so and yeah I got intrigued by that video and then I go to goodreads and read reviews about it. I was a bit shock about the mix reviews, some was positive and some was negative. So because of it I think I should read it so I have to know for myself if it's good or not. What are your expectations before reading it? > I actually have lower expectations since I've read a couple of negative reviews and they said it was very similar to The Giver by Lois Lowry. Honestly I didn't like The Giver (I just gave it two stars) and at first I thought that maybe I wouldn't like the book but at least I'd love to give utopia a second try. What do you love about the book? >Okay there are many things I love about this book: a. Writing Style- it was prose with a mix of poetry (somewhat lyrical) so if you adore Maggie Stiefvater's or Carrie Ryan's style of writing you probably would love Ally Condie's style as well. b. Cassia (the heroine)- actually the heroine was not annoying and she has a strong voice. To be more specific, her character at first was a weak one and as the story progresses, her way of thinking changes and it got deeper and deeper. She actually got a good character development and she has a lot of epiphanies about her so-called perfect society and that's what I love about her. Everything around her seems perfect when you look at it superficially but when you try to analyze it deeper there society was perfect but they have no choices, no freedom at all, they're like society's puppets. c. The love story- at first the love story was idk just a love story, but it has actually implies idk what you call that uhhhm symbolism or whatever...so yeah this is what I just think about it: Xander vs Ky or this could mean (own interpretation folks) Conformity vs. Rebellion Known vs. Unknown Perfection vs. Imperfection Love that was dictated by Society vs. Love that was dictated by oneself d. Ky and Cassia's relationship- it builds up (it actually builds up *sorry for the repetition folks*). So yeah I just wanna rant those other books wherein yeah the boy meets girl or rather the girl meets boy and then baaaaaaam for 5 seconds they freaking love each other (like they're soulmates or idk destined for each other *gags*). Come on that was so unrealistic when authors do that, it seems they're too lazy to write the part of you know "getting-to-know-each-other" part of a relationship *coughs*. So yeah :) that was what I like about this book, I mean yeah whatever idk how to explains it but they actually have that "getting-to-know-each-other" thingy. And idk when I was reading this book I felt like I'm not reading it (if you know what I mean), I felt like I was existing inside the book. Like I was Cassia and I felt all her emotions and I empathize with her problems and I can see her world right into my eyes. So yeah I just felt that while I was reading this, I would definitely pick every choices that Cassia made. I know that in my hearts of heart I would fall in love with Ky even though it was forbidden, even though my Society says that Xander was the one I was suppose to marry. I mean there's just something about Ky that pulls you into him even if it was dangerous. Ky was mysterious and his story was what urge me to know more about him (just like Cassia). Is it that wonderful when you actually was curious to know more about a person because of his/her imperfection and rather of his/her perfection? What do you hate about the book? a. It was unoriginal. > Actually there's something about this book that screams out Rip-off and Plagiarism *ever read The Giver and Hunger Games?*. Yeah but I think since this book was in the genre of utopia/dystopia, maybe there were just a few things/elements that will be always similar like: -The Political Intrigue -Human vs. Society -Rebellion -"The Government/Society Lied" thingy or "Your whole life was a lie" thingy -the protagonist will always have moments of "Epiphany" on the book -Social Manipulation sort of stuff -Philosophical and Political morals/ideas that would be shove into your throat as the storyline progresses b. I felt that the book was idk the term uhhhhm "bridge" or "exposition/ introduction" for the other books. I mean in this book there are hints that some people outside the province were actually rebelling and there's like a war blah blah blah. But in this book the rebellion was not yet elaborated so I think that will be for the next books to come. c. I love it but the ending, I felt that it wasn't an ending at all. Idk there are so many questions that are left hanging and I felt that to be able to really judge this book you need to read the whole series and how things will be played out in the end. So yeah I need the next book pretty fast! What are other books you want to recommend with the same genre? Okay so I just list them here, I'll divide dystopia and utopia and will sort of rank them out: Dystopia: 1. (5stars)
(5stars)
(both 1 star and 5stars)2. (5stars)
(2stars)3. (5stars)4. (4stars)
(2stars)Utopia: 1. (5stars)2. (2stars)3. (2stars)Note: Weeeeee! I just finished Matched and it was AMAZING. I want more!!! I love Ky Markham btw he kinda reminds me of someone *daydream for a moment* *coughs* (Eeeeeeeeeeek, *violently shoves someone*)Yeah and I just want to share a conversation with my classmate here: Joyzi: Hey I recommend you to read the Hunger Games it was so amazing blah blah blah and I read it like in one sitting cuz I can't put it down and Peeta was so sweet and everything blah blah blah, best book ever blah blah (So yeah I think I just recommend Matched by Ally Condie to my friend, because this book has zero violence but has an amazing Dystopia theme *it was quite similar to the Giver but this one has romance and the writing was breathtakingly beautiful*) Yeah, idk what else to say, I will have an in depth review of the book on Sunday. ********************************************************** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaeNWL... The truth is Stephenie Meyer was the reason I've read this book. I've actually trust her book recommendations like I also read The Mortal Instruments Boxed Set: City of Bones; City of Ashes; City of Glass because of her, so if she recommended a book I've definitely read it. So I felt like I need to have a review of the series in general. The first book Hunger Games it was very good and the plot is more like Battle Royal and it's action-packed and the thing that I also love about it is the romance. If you're a sucker for love triangles, this book has an interesting love story. The second book Catching Fire, which is my favorite book among the three because it exceeded the first novel. I have to say that the first one was more of an action-adventure type of book but in the second one it became more of a political thriller kind of book. The third book Mockingjay was the least of my favorite because it was more of a war story and it was much darker than the previous books. Nevertheless the ending/epilogue I really like it and it was kinda good but also very disturbing. One of the things, I think, that made the series different from others, was that it uses present tense instead of the usual past tense so it's like when you read it you'll observed that the author uses the verb she says instead of she said. And it was very effective because you'll feel that the action was presently happening and it felt real. I've learn a lot of things from this book. It's very thought provoking and a very good eye opener about human suffering and human nature. Also this a book like the Harry potter series wherein it's really good that you'll definitely reread it. So read it, it's YA but I think the adults will more likely enjoy this too. It's like you're not cool if you don't read it, so read it! (less) | Notes are private!

It is written in a Third Person POV which puts the reader far from the book and the characters. And I’m not really a fan of Third person and I prefer books with First Person POV. 2. I am annoyed at Connor at first and I don’t know why, I just didn’t like him maybe because of his name which is kinda ugly or because he’s sometimes impulsive and stupid. 3. I can’t help but to compare it with The Island, the movie starring Scarlett Johansson (did I spell that right?). I feel like The Island has a more solid and realistic premise than Unwind because in The Island there are clones and these clones were the one used as donors for the individual who paid for the cloning and because they are clones basically they have the same genetic make up so Organ Rejection on the Organ Transplants are 0%. 4. It just bothers me too that in Unwind all the organs can be transplanted and they should really do this because of this Bill of Life which states that Unwinds are not really killed because they are not really dead, its just that their parts are divided and transplanted to different individuals. So for me it’s unrealistic because there are only organs you can transplant for example I think brains can not be transplanted. However towards the end of the novel I was bitch slap by the author and he did explain it that there’s an invented technology in the novel which is called Neuro-grafting that makes it possible for all the organs to be transplanted and also it is 99.44% transplant from the Unwind to the different individuals because appendix is not transplanted. 5. I also find it hard to believe that there’s a war about Abortion and because of this war, Unwinding was legalized and all the ends meet. And no one as in no one, fight against it. I just find it hard to believe because as the novel says there are two parties Pro-Life and Pro-Choice, I mean they could have at least debated it and what’s the point of two parties if they all just say Aye? Idk, completely unrealistic. 6. Another thing is, in this novel there are what you called Tithes wherein they are the sacrifice of their parents to God. So they have to give their child to be Unwinds and I just think that at present times Religion and Science are always the opposing sides. So I also find again that this is hard to happen in the future, because it should be more realistic if Religion will oppose to unwinding rather than supporting and even giving the Children as tithes. 7. The first half is a little bit boring and it is not that interesting and I am just patiently waiting for something to happen. OMG I can’t believe I have too many rants. So why the 5 stars then huh? So the story picks up second half of the book when they are inside The Graveyard. It reminds me of Kid Nation wherein they have different tasks and then you can’t help it but there are kids that want to lead and then there are kids that they are naturally leaders even if they don’t want to lead. I just love that part; there are doubts, intrigue, secrets etc. I prefer not to give anything away but that part gets me hooked with this book. Also, this is where I started to like Connor and OMG I really like him. He became a mechanic in the Graveyard and I just love it, he’s really bad-ass. I also love the romance sort of between Connor and Rissa and the first kissing scene was like I wanted to rip my hair out and the second kissing scene I was like squealing and I’m stuffing a pillow on my face so my mom won’t hear me. Okay forget I write that...I also have a question for those who have read this book. Clickey the spoiler tag (view spoiler)[At the end of the novel, Risa was paralyzed from the waist down and that made her disabled. She then told Connor that she will not be Unwound because it is not legal for disabled to be Unwound. However in the first part of the novel I think it's Risa who ask someone what if the Unwind was deaf who would want a deaf ear. So my question is that deaf is a disability right, so at the first part of the novel I thought disabled can still become unwinds but at the last part they aren't anymore. So someone explain this to me. (hide spoiler)] Okay WTH I don’t know what else I would say. Now I’m speechless. ……. I just wanted you to know that the last part of this book was really something. You know with what happens to the characters. It was terrible, sick, disgusting, and tragic. And there will be a sequel that is not published yet. Some says that this book could pass as a standalone and given that there’s an open ending. It ended like the problem is not yet solved however there’s still hope at the end of the book. The ending reminds me of Mockingjay actually, a very dark ending but still there is hope for them. (less) | Notes are private!

This is not a rant, or maybe it is, but don't worry Collins, I still love you sweetheart.) Finally I finished reading this disturbing book. Please, please, please don't let that baby blue color cover of this book fooled you. The book is intense, horrifying, scary, sad, tragic, creepy and sick. I actually have two ratings for this book, I'm still undecided if I'm going to give five stars or one star rating. I don't want to settle it on three stars because it doesn't make any sense, it's either of the two I guess, either it's amazing or I don't like it at all. Why-oh-why the five star rating? 1. I still love the book and I still think Suzanne Collins is an alien I mean a genius who had these out of this world ideas that perhaps I wouldn't think in a million years. 2. The book has its depth, I mean this is a very serious, powerful thought provoking and mind-blowing book. The message and the content are strong, and sometimes I do get the feeling that maybe the problem is me and not the book. 3. God damn it! Every end of the chapter of this freaking book is like WTF moments. It's like the inevitable, dreadful, most shocking events are most often than not are at the end of the chapters and that was really amazing in the part of the author. 4. I really have these hysterical moments wherein I just scream Peeta's name over and over, and then I cry like WTF is happening to me. I swear thank goodness, I am inside my room and no one's watching me so that I can freely scream, cry, become hysterical without someone thinking I'm going crazy. This was the only book that had me lost my mind while reading it. I swear I became too emotional like I feel like I'm going insane. 5. This book definitely and undoubtedly has the ability to haunt you, as in after reading the book, I can't stop thinking about it, even I dream about it that I have nightmares for two nights now, Suzanne Collins what have you done to me???!!!! 6. I really love the song "The Hanging Tree" even though it's really creepy. 7. I love love love Finnick. I guess one of my favorite moments in the book is when Annie and Finnick reunites, it's just too sexy. It's just too sad though that Finnick is dead like I want to say fuck you! Why do you have to kill Finnick after the wedding and all that you would kill him off? I just want to yell at the author I'm so pissed off. 8. I love the intrigue like at the beginning I know there's something wrong with District 13 and President Coin. I love that Katniss chose to kill Coin instead of Snow that really blindside me like totally didn't see it coming. I love how the truth was being altered by these manipulative politicians. I don't want to elaborate, but I just love the turn of events in the end, what can I say, but brilliant3x! 9. The epilogue is so sad and touching and I really like it because Katniss and Peeta end up together and then they have kids, and there's no more hunger games, happily ever after. Why-oh-why the one star rating? 1. Almost all the characters that I love from the first two books, I hate in this book. I hate Gale! yeah yeah especially him! There are many moments wherein I really don't trust him and then I really wanted that some bomb would kill him or whatever. I don't know, but I really hate him like he's so heartless with what he did in District Two and then the bomb that killed Prim, was his design, I think he goes off to District Two because I think in the end he can't face Katniss anymore after what he did even if it's indirectly to Prim's death. I also hate Katniss, I know that she was being manipulated, brainwashed, used like a puppet/tool/pawn by Coin and the given circumstances, but she really break apart in this book. She gave way to morphling and insanity, and her being the Mockingjay is a little bit scripted. The propos too flashy and cheesy (the costumes, make-up and all those fake smoke) that it was more ridiculous than real for me. 2. She killed off Finnick and it's too gruesome as in ewww and there's like many more disturbing moments in the book wherein I think it's really hard to read because it's too much gore really, with images of blood, intestines, blown extremities. The violence is just too much especially to the children, when they are being used as a trap and then their bodies just blown off. I mean it's just too dark that I really don't like it. 3. The romance is just like Twilight like when Gale and Peeta were talking and I was like I felt I read something like this when Jacob and Edward were also talking while Bella is eavesdropping. I was like while reading that part, WTH is this twilight or something? 4. Gale leaves Katniss off and live on District 2 and Katniss ends up with Peeta in 12. I know even though Katniss has finally made the decision, I just want it to be fair like, why did Gale if she really loves Katniss, just leaves her and work on District 2, doesn't make sense to me even if I hate Gale. 5. The deaths of the other characters are not known like what happens to Cinna, Portia, Madge, etc. they just mentioned in the book that they're dead. 6. A minor character replaced Coin as the new president, which also disappointed me because when she was mentioned it was funny that I don't remember her right away. 7. Another ridiculous death scene is how President Snow dies, it was unclear and utterly unrealistic. 8. I know this is a war story and that's why the plot is a big mess, but somehow I was hoping for a moment of redemption or justice in the storyline. Somehow the reason for fighting was lost, the humanity and the morality were lost and in the end I really question the rebels' actions because their actions were verging on revenge. And still confused me why did Katniss vote yes for another Hunger Games and this time for the children of Capitol, I believe that this is very controversial and I need the author to explain this to me. Favorite Quotes: "I'm going to be the Mockingjay." "Some walks you have to take alone" "Finnick!" Something between a shriek and a cry of joy. A lovely if somewhat bedraggled young woman--dark tangled hair, sea green eyes--runs toward us in nothing but a sheet. "Finnick!" And suddenly, it's as if there's no one in the world but these two, crashing through space to reach each other. They collide, enfold, lose their balance, and slam against a wall, where they stay. Clinging into one being. Indivisible. A pang of jealousy hits me. Not for either Finnick or Annie but for their certainty. No one seeing them could doubt their love." "You're a painter. You're a baker. You like to sleep with the windows open. You never take sugar in your tea. And you always double-knot your shoelaces." "Peeta and I had adjoining cells in the capitol. We're very familiar with each other's screams." "Oh, that I do know...Katniss will pick whoever she thinks she can't survive without." "That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that." "You love me. Real, or not real?" I tell him, "Real." "There are much worse games to play." ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm planning to have a review by chapters when I get the book on the 25th of August (if you're wondering why not August 24 it's because I'm in the Philippines) so that I could have review and spoilers fast enough. I'm actually planning to read slower because I know that I'm going to be dreadful if I read too fast knowing that this is the last book of the trilogy. I'm currently rereading Hunger Games and Catching Fire this weekend to refresh my memory and yeah I know that would probably my fifth time reading it, but I'm surprised that I was really still enjoying it as if its like reading it for the first time. Yeah I'm Team Peeta, but I know that Gale would probably get more presence and importance this time since he's with Katniss at the end of Catching Fire and Peeta was like a captive of the Capitol. I'm not into Gale because in the last two books he was not always there and I think the books were really focused on Katniss and Peeta's relationship. It might be just me, but I believe that it would really make more sense if Katniss ends up with Peeta since from the last two books they are the main protagonists and Gale was like more of an extra character, but since Suzanne Collins was very unpredictable she might change my mind when I read the third book and Gale's character hopefully would develop more. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh my God! The long wait is over! I'm planning to have it pre-order in National Bookstore and thus I will also get a free Mockingjay shirt...*big smile* I'm so excited and I just can't hide it.^^ I hope Peeta lives, Ms. Suzanne! please, please, please(less) | Notes are private!

I don't know how to say this, but this book was certainly one of the books that I had read that left a huge impact on how I should see things. This was definitely one of those that I will always remember and never forget. Truth is the book is depressing, while I'm reading it I'm feeling that the book lacks something and that was "humor." If I have to compare it to My Sister's Keeper wherein there are still dialogues that I've found humorous, this book has none of it. So if you are planning to read this, I better warned you that the book will make you feel depressed, guilty, angry, sick and hateful that you find yourself almost like you're suffocating. There are moments wherein while I'm reading it I felt like having a dejavu because you can relate to the story. In all honesty there might be more of those moments in my life that I was the bully than I was the one being bullied. There is this scene in the book wherein Peter was pants-ed and humiliated in front of the cafeteria and that also happen in my school during High School days wherein a boy from our class suffers the same fate and just like Peter this boy was bullied every day of our whole four years in High School and what I did back then was I laugh at him like Matt, Josie and the others in the story did. When I think about it bullying was a reality, wherein it happens every day and as long as you’re the one not being bullied you don’t care because we are that selfish. I loved that Jodi Picoult tackles controversial issues on her books and what I loved about her is she would give you the different perspectives of a story. Because of it the story was not just in the surface and you will realize that every character was complex, human and they are real, they are not one-dimensional. I learned that one can never judge other person perfectly and without bias and prejudices. As long as you don't have the same experience, you can't understand someone. Maybe you could say that you empathize with the victims who died on the shooting, the victims who are not killed, but their whole lives have changed dramatically wherein they became paralyzed, traumatized or their appearance will not be ever the same because of the scars left by the gun shots. But in the other side you can also empathize with the killer who was being bullied and humiliated physically, emotionally, psychologically all his life. I loved that the book made me think in a different way and not one-sided. I loved that at first I hated the killer, but as the story progress I learn to understand why he did the shooting and I realized that he was biggest victim of this all and how was life was really unfair for him. I also loved the ending of the story unlike My Sister's Keeper wherein I really loathed the ending. I think that she ended it right and I loved that even though the ending was a sad one, but having Alex pregnant I think lessens the sadness of how the story ended because I think that the baby symbolizes a new hope for them. This is the thrid Jodi Picoult book that I've read. First of all, I'd like to thank Atty. Monique who gave me this book last Christmas. I used to read ebooks of Jodi Picoult and this is the first time that I read an actual JP novel. I've read My Sister's Keeper and Nineteen Minutes by the same author and what I realize is that Jodi Picoult is a formulaic author. She writes novels which are mostly medical, ethical and legal in nature and her books are mostly serious, heavy and infuriating. So, if you want to be relaxed or you want to have fun while reading (or what we called simply the pleasure readers) Jodi Picoult may be not be your cup of tea. The Pact is very Jodi Picoult. Heavy drama, intense, thought-provoking and a type of story that you might feel angry or depressed while reading it. At first, I felt a little bored because I felt that the story is too slow at the beginning. It has a shock element at the beginning because it was a case of a Suicide Pact. The story is a sort of a puzzle and there are times that the author will bring you to what happen in the past. A little information is provided in the beginning and then as the story progress more and more information will be provided. As it progress, there is a doubt if what happen is a double suicide gone wrong or a murder. What I like about it is that, the whole truth is not revealed until the near-end of the story and even though I got the perspectives from a lot of characters I cannot somehow truly tell or understand what really happened and I can only speculate. This novel is also a mystery novel, so it's not like a 100% drama or love story. I actually love this book because I learned a lot from it. I'm going to a law school this June and I'm not really sure if I know a lot about law and the judicial system. I'm a registered nurse and I felt that I have more knowledge about suicide and counseling. There is one part of this book that I can't forget, which in a room the lawyer, the psychiatrist and the client were there. It's told in the lawyer's perspective and somehow he thinks about what is the difference between how a lawyer talks to his client and how the psychiatrist talks to his client. The concern of the lawyer is to get the facts that he can use to defend his client while the concern of the psychiatrist is to know the feelings of his client. The lawyer is also afraid of getting the whole story because if the client admits or confesses the crime he might not be able to defend his client knowing too well that he's guilty. Actually I've experienced counseling and therapeutic communication before so it feels like the psychiatrist's actions for me is natural and what seems new is the lawyer's perspective about counseling. That's just one and I just learned a lot of things about how the justice system works and I gained a lot of insights and perspectives. The only reason why I gave it four stars because I'm not convinced about the plot twist and the ending of the story. It seems unrealistic and contrived and I don't know why Jodi Picoult end it that way. I'll be happy if it ends the other way around. Maybe the author just want to leave a little bit of hope, but I wont be saddened if it ends with a tragedy.(less) | Notes are private!

Anna was a genetically engineered baby so that in the future she could be use as a donor for her sister Kate who has leukemia. At first it was only cord blood, then she have to give her after a few years, lymphocytes, granulocytes etc., then a bone marrow transplant. Anna was a little kid then so the decisions in these procedures well of course in her parents' hands. Now that her sister Kate has a kidney failure her mother asked her if she could donate one of her kidneys so that her sister could be save by death. Anna then realizes that she had enough, she wants that she could at least have control over what would be done to her body because in the end, in a long-term run, having one kidney have risks. So Anna decided to sue her parents to have medical emancipation. The conflict in this story was intense because now Anna should consider herself versus her family. Also Anna don't hate her sister Kate and that makes it more hard for her. And while I'm reading this book, I realized that, you know Anna's parents you can not judge them because I think that being a parent it's hard for them because they have to save Kate but it doesn't mean that they don't care for Anna, it's complicated. Nevertheless I think the book shows and explains why does parents have to decide things like that, as I said earlier we can not judge them. And then Anna in the end have succeeded and she became emancipated, she no longer have to donate her kidneys. I love how does it happen in the court room, especially when they point out that this is not a case or whether or not Anna should gave her kidneys but instead Anna having choices and deciding for herself what's good for her body, because that's her body. And then after that, after all the drama, the questioning of the court room, after Anna is finally free, she died on the same day that she was finally free. She died because of a car accident. And I was like what the hell was that? I mean what's the point? It's like when I'm watching Final Destination when all these characters just die in stupid no reason at all way. It's just like that I really don't get what Jodi Picoult wants to point out, maybe because that would make the story unpredictable like "Got you! Bet you didn't see that coming!" or because it makes me sing that Ironic song of Alanis Morisette,"Isn't it Ironic? Don't you think?" or maybe she just want to end it with a bloody heavy drama we've seen in televisions that it's totally cliche. Nevertheless I still recommend it, read it and you'll learn a lot of things. I'm a nursing student and last last year we've discussed this in Health Ethics actually but in truth I learn a lot of things while reading this than when I'm studying this in class. And if you're like a little bit hesitated especially if you don't like drama, drama, drama, there is a minor plot that has a romance in it. So it's drama with a little bit of romance and some of the lines are still humorous but overall it's like a very serious and depressing book.(less) | Notes are private!

When I was reading it I was like thinking where the story will go, I guessed wrong about my predictions that Katniss would go away, go to the woods or rebel and lead an uprising in their District. I think that's why I really love this book because it's unpredictable, and what happens in the end, I just felt awe and dumbstruck. Like I have so many questions in my mind, I felt I'm going to go crazy and what'll happen especially to Peeta. Since in this book I've grown to love his character. Its just there time together with Katniss is like became really romantic and after they've been through a lot about the Hunger Games now that it happen to them twice. And how he's just sweet, kind, smart, and I'd just really like him. I'd really felt like I'm dying and I want to read the next one. Ugh, it's just torture to wait a long time. The Official Cast ***I'll update if there are news.. Katniss: Jennifer Lawrence ![]() Peeta: Josh Hutcherson ![]() Gale: Liam Hemsworth ![]() Book Review: Even my eyes are just too heavy and I really wanted to sleep, I can't resist myself to read the book from start to finish just so I can know how it end. Entertaining and thrilling, I cannot put it down! I guess the not so good thing about it is that it's like a rip-off from battle royale. Though I think the love story in it is much better, the love triangle between Katniss, Peeta and Gale. Its like I'm torn like Katniss to whom I love more Peeta or Gale. The games (chapter 2) is my favorite. The fight for survival, not only that the other tributes are your enemy, but it also you against the hunger, thirst, the game makers and vicious creatures. How Katniss survives because of her hunting abilities and that Rue allied with her. It's detailed, the herbs, the hunting for food, the weapons and that's make it more realistic for me. It also has plot twists that I never see coming. It has drama, action, romance and comedy so I think it will appeal to a lot of readers out there. It also has a depth in it because it's a story about human versus society. PS: Hey I have written a fan-fic and you've got to read it: Peeta Mellark in Real Life(less) | Notes are private!

Ms. Keen's voice fades to a mosquito whine. My throat closes off. It is hard to breathe. I put out my hand to steady myself against the table. David pins her froggy hands to the dissetion tray. He spreads her froggy legs and pins her froggy feet. I have to slice open her belly. She doesn't say a word. She is already dead. A scream starts in my gut- I can feel the cut, smell the dirt, leaves in my hair. ![]() (image courtesy of www.deviantart.com) Intro *Scroll down, book review below, this is just me shenaniganing(is that even a word?)* This book is a young adult realistic fiction novel written by New York Best-selling author Laurie Halse Anderson in 1999. It might seem ages ago since this book was published and I'm a bit too late to grab and read the book. I was intrigued by it because when The Filipino Group in Goodreads met last December it was a heated topic whether this book is good or not. One of our member Iyah rated it two stars and the other one is Jzhun rated it 4 stars. I was actually at that point very silent and just listening to them since I've not read it yet. Well that occurrence made me want to read the book immediately so that I'll know for myself what they're talking about. To be honest it was very hard to find a copy of the book in book stores since it was published in 1999 and the only book they have was Wintergirls, another novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. I find this book in a secondhand book store and I was really glad because it was pretty cheap and I bought the book immediately. Book Review When I first read it, to tell you the truth, I was struggling, the writing style was a wee bit different and it takes time to really get used to it. Melinda the protagonist on the novel talks a lot, I mean this was another of those stream of consciousness writing style, and to have a very talkative character is a bit painful. It's like having a friend who talks about herself a lot and some times you just lost in her litany like "What was she saying again?" I didn't relate to the story and the High School atmosphere in this book as well. It's like this is not what I experience in High School, it felt like reading the book you would actually think that High School was a terrible period of someone's life. These are quotes from the book to explain what I'm talking about: "THE FIRST TEN LIES THEY TELL YOU IN HIGH SCHOOL I just think that those are pretty unrealistic since that's not what I experience during High School. But who am I to say that, of course maybe it would be just me, but what about the other teenagers, in other places, or in other countries or maybe that also happen in my school, I just happen to be oblivious? See I don't really close it at that because life is complicated and it holds multiple truths so maybe this kind of High School is existing you know. A school wherein it builds on lies and negativism. I may say a lot of rants on how I really hate Melinda's narrative, the course of her thinking wherein she was not consistent, talk a lot of things and people in this paragraph and then the line of thought breaks and she would talk on another idea, people or some trivial stuff on another paragraph. See I forgive the book on that matter, maybe stream of consciousness was simply not for Anderson's, I put it simply at that. Also it has one typo: Her pride is at stake, her womynhood. If you don't believe me look it up page 170. Nevertheless the book is thought provoking, it's like a Jodi Picoult book for young adults. You may find the writing funny at times with its wit, sarcasm and dry humor but goodness it's very deep, depressing and dark indeed. It talks a story about a girl who was rape for God's sake. A girl who was rape and she's just trying to conceal it, she didn't bother to tell anyone, to speak. This is why the book is considered to be one of the banned books by the way, because a man just thought that the rape scene in this book was pornographic. We were on the ground. When did that happen? "No." No I did not like this. I was on the ground and he was on top of me. My lips mumble something about leaving, about a friend who needs me, about my parents worrying. I can hear myself- I'm mumbling like a deranged drunk. His lips lock on mine and I can't say anything. I twist my head away. He is so heavy. There is a boulder on me. I open my mouth to breathe, to scream, and his hand covers it. In my head, my voice is as clear as bell: "NO I DON'T WANT TO!" But I can't spit it out. I'm trying to remember how we got on the ground and where the moon went and wham! shirt up, shorts down, and the grounds smell wet and dark and NO!- I'm not really here, I'm definitely back at Rachel's, crimping my hair and gluing on fake nails, and he smells like beer and mean and he hurts me hurts me hurts me and gets up Really for the guy who petitioned for the banning of this book and thinks that the scene was pornographic, I don't get you. I simply don't think that the scene is pornographic, it is subtle and even vague for me. Gosh. People. Sometimes I really don't get you. *deep breaths* Okay I just want to add that the book has a powerful message. If I was rape in High School maybe if I read this book it will change my life and I'll speak and fight for my rights. This book was very good and I really recommend it, it really deserve the Printz Award. Rape was never a laughing matter for me, it might be the most awful thing someone could have done to a person. In the end you might say that Melinda and her rape story doesn't have closure and a solution was not specified. However I think the book closes with an open ending. It ended just by the time Melinda decide to finally speak and I think that after that maybe Andy her rapist was imprisoned.(less) | Notes are private!

It's beautifully written, the descriptions of the skies, people, places are just unique, the descriptions used are not the usual like the author used to say his hair is like lemons, or he has hair like feathers. The friendship and love story of Liesel and Rudy keep me from reading. It's just so cute and I always smile whenever I have read Rudy saying, "How about a kiss?" The thievery part is also very good, I feel very nostalgic because it reminds me of my childhood days when I used to like to watch "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," wherein they steal apples too. I really like when he described Liesel as the book thief without words and I just felt really sympathetic to Liesel because I love reading too and it's just sad thinking that she's really trying hard to be literate at that time. And Death, yes the one who narrates the Book Thief's Story, it felt for me that Death is like very cool here. He's not the one with the black cloak or he doesn't look like a skeleton with a scythe or something. It's really fun when he describes about how he hates his work and sometimes he loves to have a vacation. It's a tragic story, but from the very start Death, the narrator will tell you something about the ending that they will all die, so he's a kind of a spoiler. All in all it's very good, the message and the themes (Death, Friendship, Society, War, Family, Loyalty, Love) are very excellent and you will definitely learn many things from this book. I can't put it down and read it in one day. I remember my mom was mad at me because I'm like, "I don't want to eat yet, I'm reading a book!" After that I ate lunch, at our table while still reading and I'm holding the book in my other hand and holding the spoon in my other hand. That's how good this book is.(less)
