I was working in a book store at the time and bought it immediately. But then it sat on my to-read shelf until now. I don’t know why I didn’t want to read this book, I have certainly read through all the others since this book has come out. For whatever reason I just never picked up this one to finish it all out. Now I have and it was a really good finish. Septimus and Jenna, Beetle and Marcia, Alther, Lucy, there are so many characters that we have come to know and love and this book brought them all around again. We have a lot of micro stories that get wrapped up but she leaves the door open by introducing more of this world. Overall a good wrap up book for those who have read the other six and can’t wait to see how this series ends. ...more

Parts of it were strange especially about peeking in girls locker rooms and creeping on the cheerleader practice, but overall this was a good book. I don’t know if I would ever had picked it up on my own, and I know that I wouldn’t pay for it but if I saw the second one at the library I would totally read it. Walter has just died, and he finds out that in the afterlife if you weren’t particularly good or bad you have to find a job and hopefully do enough good to make it into heaven. He discovers that you can apply to be a guardian angel!! After acing the entrance exam he gets to skip training and is assigned to Charlie. Charlie needs help in every aspect of his life in Walter’s eyes. He is bullied, has way too many birds, and has an unhealthy obsession with the paranormal. But Charlie is in real trouble he has stumbled upon an ancient book that would allow demons to enter our world, once you touch the book it is bound to you for life. Walter and Charlie have to work together to save our world from the demons. A fun book with an interesting premise, and was done well. For fourth graders on up who enjoy paranormal books and are looking for something that isn’t too scary. ...more
I’m going to have to read more South African Steampunk mysteries. It’s just what I’m going to have to start doing. Thanks Steeplejack for introducingI’m going to have to read more South African Steampunk mysteries. It’s just what I’m going to have to start doing. Thanks Steeplejack for introducing me to a whole genre of books I didn’t know that I needed. Who has any recommendations of books that are similar to this because with how much I have read and worked around books I can’t really pin point any books that comes close. Yes, I’ve read mystery, and steampunk, and mystery steampunk, and books with characters who like to climb, and kick-ass female characters, and so many different amazing things come together to make this book a stand out. Anglet is a climber she makes her living climbing the outside of chimneys and towers to repair them. She is to train a new apprentice but when she finally finds him he’s dead. And it’s not from a fall as the police are trying to say it is. When she starts looking for answers to his death she keeps turning up more questions and getting deeper into danger. I really don’t want to spoil anything in this book. If you have a passing thought as to whether or not you should read this do. Please read this it is fresh and unique perhaps the only book I can somewhat compare it to is Rebel Mechanics, but that is a very thin thread of a connection. This book is for girls and boys who are looking for something different ages 13 on up there is a hairy situation or two that isn’t graphic and nothing happens but knowing that someone wants to/ tried to do that to Anglet really makes for a tense novel. ...more

It had a little bit of everything that I enjoy in a realistic teen fiction book. Viviana’s life is spiraling out of control. Her parents are separating which is one step away from divorce, her now ex-boyfriend showed everyone the sexy picture she had taken of herself for him and on top of that she can’t go to the engineering camp which means she’ll never get into her father’s Alma Mater which means that life as she knows it is over. Now with a wide open summer she and her best friend get jobs at the local pool checking in members, and checking out the hot guys. Not really how she pictured her summer going but it might give her time to fix her life. But sometimes there are things that are more broken than you know, and things that you just can’t fix. A really good realistic teen book aimed at girls ages 13 on up. ...more

She is sick of having to take princess lessons and really just wants to do what she wants to do. Her father is in agreement and with her small band ready to go there is a major issue the addition of her older and snooty cousin Cyril. Can she keep everyone happy and safe while at the same time trying to make sure that everyone is working together so that they can eat and sleep without worry? With a light touch of Lord of the Flies this is a great story to get kids to think about responsibility, working together, and how to deal with unfairness. Mostly aimed at girls this is a book that fourth grade on up will enjoy. Leaves you with several questions and some pretty big cliff hangers I know this is a series that I will want to keep an eye out for. ...more

Darling Dimple has been picked to be in charge of the Princesses beloved Canary. Darling Dimple has been picked to save the castle from those who wish to destroy it. Darling Dimple has no idea what she is doing.
A fun story about a girl who discovers a magical closet that has 100 dresses, but when you put them on the dress transforms you into someone else! Darling has to use the magic of the castle to save the kingdom. This is a cute fun story for girls in third grade on up. This book had a few plot holes, mostly involving how the dress magic worked, but it is still a great little story and I can’t wait to read the next one in the series. ...more

Peter Tunie, and Horus are three children who couldn’t be more different if they tried. Peter is from a rich family, his mother has recently died and his father married another woman who has twin boys who relentlessly torment him in the worst ways. Tunie’s mother has also died, but she isn’t as lucky at Peter, her father is dying and since this is the great depression there isn’t enough money to afford enough food much less afford a doctor or medicine. Horus’s parents are dead, so is everyone he’s ever known, he’s been a mummy for thousands of years. He has been cursed with everlasting regret and Tunie and Peter are the first friends he’s had since he’s been dead. These three become unlikely friends when a girl is kidnapped in front of Horus. Can this trio solve the mystery? A great little chapter book that is fast paced and lends itself well to both girl and boy readers. Because it is a short and sweet book I would say this is a book for second and third graders in need of a chapter book that is more than Magic Tree house but less than Wimpy Kid. I hope this is part of a series I can't wait to see what happens next ...more

I am not a true gamer, but I do know a lot about them. As it stands as someone who dabbles or knows perhaps a little more than the average person but not as much as my best friend or my boyfriend I got about 90% of the video game references that this book threw at me.
Jaxon is a video game nerd, we all know one, someone who would prefer to play video games over anything else, not really good or bad at school, just sort of coasting between games. While playing he is going to be screaming, or swearing and heaven help if you interrupt or if there’s lag. Jaxon is fat, pimply, and only a beard away from being an actual neck beard. He’s shipped off to video game rehab where the players are to earn points and when they reach a million they get to go home. Jaxon is now obsessed with leaving as fast as possible cutting corners, cheating, and doing everything he can to leave so he can go on a date with a girl he met at a car wash for like ten minutes. This book kept my interest and had its moments of fun and funny. Very ham handed with its message but not a bad read, the main character is not a likeable one and he’s not supposed to be, not many of the characters are likeable which makes this book a little hard to care about but as the reader you do want to see where it is all going. This book is for 14 on up as there is language, and mention of masturbation and all that sort of stuff, nothing that you wouldn’t hear if you were playing COD online aimed at boys though anyone who is a gamer would enjoy the name dropping involved. ...more
