Second, the story and mental state of the narrator are subtly horrifying. Reading this is like watching someone slowly lose their clasp on surety. It is a study in how one deals with a desperate situation when all of their coping mechanisms dissolve one by one. It is the frantic search for an example to follow, for a way to persist that doesn't sacrifice sanity.
Third, I almost gave this four stars. If anyone thinks they shouldn't read this because I rated it low you should know that three is very good for me. It means I "liked it", which means I recommend it. It is very difficult to get on my four and five star lists. ...more

I've just finished it and I've immediately started re-reading it. There's too much there to really get it all with one read. Some of the anecdotes, situations, and images it creates are entertaining enough that I was sometimes distracted from the larger whole. I also feel that I'm going to need to reread a lot of 16th and 17th century stuff to better grasp the influence of this book. I'm talking basic canonical stuff: Shakespeare, Cervantes, Milton, Lope, Marlowe, etc. I've been robbed!
Caveat: Some readers may be offended by the frequency and prominence of sex, anal sex, murdering thieves, adultery, scatalogical humor, witchcraft, or bestiality. Others may think this list is an example of keyword stuffing, if such a thing exists on goodreads, or an attempt to oversell the book. Let me assure you, it's all there, but this book is so much more than that....more
