I love Ms Weir's non fiction and I have to say that Eleanor is my favorite of all the royalty I read about. That may be because Kate Hepburn has always been my favorite actress and Peter O'Toole one of my top 5 actors. I was so moved as a teen when Lion in Winter came out. I had already loved Becket so I was quite prepared for this huge love story and dynasty building.
I have read everything that I could get my hands on about these 2 from Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver to Pamela Kaufman's Book of Eleanor and as much as I adore historical fiction, I have to say that this just doesn't do it for me. There is so much here that is a joy, the detail about the clothing, descriptions of the various kingdoms make me want to get on a plane, and the history of the strife for power between Henry and his sons is amazing. I am not a prude but I think it is just over the top on the carnality side. I "get" the passion that drew them together but - too much. There had to be so much more to them both! (less)
