I could not put the book down, I just wanted to know what happened to Cheryl Ann. Cheryl Ann the main character starts out life with a less than loving mother and a wonderful father who sadly passed away too soon. When Cheryl Ann is of age, she runs off with her then boyfriend and together they start a life. Prior to their marriage, Cheryl Ann becomes pregnant. She is young and not yet married, but feels that her boyfriend will love the baby and that they would be married soon enough. Sadly, he completely rejects the idea of becoming a father, instead he dreams of buying boats and real estate. Cheryl Ann basically on her own has to make the difficult decision, to keep the baby or to put it up for adoption. Throughout the novel, we follow Cheryl Ann in her life and see the ups and downs in it. Cheryl Ann is a very relatable character and one that you are routing for throughout the book. I cried with her and I laughed with her. Bette Lee Crosby, hit another home run with this book and it is one that I highly recommend to all. ...more

He sadly cannot find her son, but he does find her granddaughter. Ida contacts her and learns that her life is in a place where she can come and at least meet Ida. My relationship with her, has no bearing on my review. Thank you Bette Lee so much for the opportunity to read yet again, another one of your fantastic books. The Twelfth Child is a story filled with so many emotions. Emotions of joy and sadness but mostly emotions of how wonderful a human being can be, while at the same time how awful a person can be to another. The story starts out even before the main character Abigail Lannigan is born. She is born as a twin to a father and his wife. Her father is not one for female children and so her twin brother is her father's favorite. Sadly, her mother dies at a very young age and she is raised by her father, and always biding for his attention in anyway she can. Abigail always enjoyed learning and while her mother was alive, she attended school and became very close with her teacher. As time passed after her mother's death, her father wanted her to get married and to forget about an education. She told her teacher and her teacher arranged for Abigail to move away to assist an elderly lady that the teacher once knew in Virginia. One day Abigail snuck away, this left her and her father's relationship completely at odds and they were to never speak again. Abigail, however, did remain in contact with her twin brother. Sadly, the depression hit and the once very wealthy woman that Abigail lived with lost all of her money and soon her life. Abigail was left homeless, without a soul in the world. One day as Abigail was sitting in a park she befriended a young woman who offered her a job. She took it not knowing that it meant she would basically be a dancer at a club. In the end she was good at it and it paid the bills. As time passed, Abigail got back on her feet, but then the club closed. Abigail began spending time at the library and the librarian soon offered her a job. In time, Abigail met a man and it seemed that her life was going to be heading in the right direction until she found out that he was married. Abigail never again fell in love and lived a mostly lonely life until a young woman named Destiny moved in next door. She brought life to Abigail and they became fast friends. In the meantime, Abigail's father passed away and left everything to Abigail's brother. It was a sizable amount and when he soon passed away not far after, Abigail received the inheritance. She began allowing Destiny to have full rights to her checking accounts and began to give Destiny many things she no longer needed. Prior to her brother's death, a very distant cousin named Elliott showed up. He claimed that the inheritance Abigail's brother received should have come to him upon his death. He obviously was just looking for money, but Abigail was kind and gave him some. When Abigail passed away, he took Destiny to court believing that he could swindle her out of the money that Abigail left her. Destiny who was all alone and so distressed over the loss of Abigail, answered the door one day to a man who was preaching. She told him about her sorrows and he recommended an attorney that could help her. In the end Destiny and the attorney Charles, fell in love and he made the case take a turn that was definitely not in Elliot's favor. All the while Abigail is watching the events from above. What a wonderful story and one that should be read by all....more

The writing was great, however the storylines were a little odd for me. On the one hand we have a couple struggling with infertility and how society treats people even when they don't have all of the facts straight. Then we have a story regarding teenage suicide, then there's the mysterious widowed neighbor who soon becomes pregnant after her beloved spouse dies and finally there is infidelity. The stories are interwoven, but are very jaggedly attached. An interesting read if not a bit predictable. ...more

I generally end up giving up on a book that starts off this way, but something about what I was reading kept me interested. I can say that by the middle of the book I sort of got all of the characters straight and enjoyed each of their separate and sometimes intertwining lives. In many ways, this author reminded me a bit of Maeve Binchy's style of writing. That is a huge compliment as Maeve Binchy has been a favorite author of mine for a long time. I will definitely seek out other books by this author. ...more
