Accused of being a black witch, she's been shunned by the Coven. Now she's running and fighting for her life as they try to lobotomize her. I always enjoy reading about Rachel Morgan. Kim Harrison's writing is fast-paced, full of detail and leaves me breathless. I get completely sucked into her world, hating the moments I have to step away to do stuff like eat and sleep. And, predictably, I was hooked from the very first scene of Rachel in Algaliarept's kitchen, learning to twist a curse. Black Magic Sanction also brought back a character I've been longing to see again ever since I was first introduced to Rachel Morgan. Pierce has been a favorite of mine since he was introduced as a ghost in Ms. Harrison's short story, Two Ghosts for Sister Rachel from the anthology Holidays Are Hell. Although he appeared again in White Witch, Black Curse, I was happy to learn more about him and his past in this story. And then there's Al. I have a soft spot in my heart for this deadly demon. Maybe it's his British accent? Whatever it may be, I enjoy the power struggle between Rachel and her demon teacher. And Jenks! My favorite pixie! Oh! Prepare yourself! I try not to give spoilers, but get your tissues ready for this one!
First line: Tucking my hair back, I squinted at the parchment, trying to form the strange angular letters as smoothly as I could.(less)

I could clearly see what was happening in the story despite a few sudden POV shifts. I was quickly pulled into the lives of the main characters: Alexander, a fire demon, out to destroy his enemy, and Sariel, the niece of his enemy. This was an enjoyable quick read. I was not aware, however, that this was Part One in a serial. This is only one short installment. The story ended very abruptly and left many unanswered questions that will presumably be continued in Part Two. (less)

This one is filled with both black magic concerning demons and the white magic of witches. Add in a few vampires and its a great combination for a fun paranormal read. The characters really took on their personalities making them feel like real people. So much so that even as I was rooting for Cassie and Sam, I was also irritated with some of their decisions. But that only made me turn the pages faster to find out what happened to them next! I truly enjoyed reading this story, and I look forward to reading future books in this series. I would love to see the romance blossom between the main characters. Ms. Mead also has me intrigued with the secondary characters and how the future will play out for them. I only wish this story had been written in first person POV. For the most part this is Cassie's story, but I would have loved to see it completely through her eyes to add to the level of suspense.
