I am having a difficult time rating this book. Although the subject matter was difficult to read and heart breaking, I'm not sure if it was the translI am having a difficult time rating this book. Although the subject matter was difficult to read and heart breaking, I'm not sure if it was the translation or the writing that was lacking. I know it was an abridged edition of the original And the World Remained Silent which was never released, but it seems like a lot was lost and left me with too many questions.
I was left wondering why he only spoke of one sister when he had three? What happened to his leg? Did he ever regained his faith? Did he ever did mourn his family's tragic death? Not to mention my disappointment with how the ending was cut short without going into details about his life directly after being released from the concentration camp.
Yes, what he wrote was disturbing to read, knowing that he suffered through all this first hand. But, there was nothing in the book that I haven't already read about before. Maybe, one day his original work will be published and professionally translated but until then, this book left me feeling empty and not deserving of a 5 star rating.
However, all my personal feelings aside on how it could be better, not going through it first hand and then having the courage to write about it... I am still reminded that this is a very terrible yet significant event in history and we must never forget what Weisel and so many others endured by the hands of other men all those years ago and WE must make sure to NEVER let this type of tragedy ever happen again. Which is why, Weisel not only wrote this book but why he won the Nobel Peace Prize and why this book is read in classrooms around the world -- SO WE NEVER DO FORGET....more
