Then I received the assignment to read the play for class under death-threat and promptly went to see a production of the play, then read the text of the drama.
I found Shakespeare's English to be rather readable, which I had not expected. Doubtlessly I missed a lot of the subtleties; sometimes I spaced out and had to refer to my memory of the play to get the gist of what was happening. But all in all, yes, this is a very good play. I like the revenge-theme and how it gets executed; it all comes together very well. I did feel it could have been tighter here and there, but hey, I know next to nothing about 16th century writings, so there you go.
All in all? I don't feel like Hamlet is meant to be read (as far as I know Shakespeare wrote directly for the stage?) - I'd certainly like to see it again on stage though....more
