A year unlike any other in Colt's existence. This Secret year that he had spent with Julia. Messages placed in lockers, meetings at the bridge, stolen kisses that would soon lead to the backseat of a car. Moments of life filled with passion that would cool in the warmth of the sun, because Colt and Julia were NOT a couple. She already had a boyfriend
Colt could not define what he had with Julia. He only knew that he wanted to be with her and she with him. And It was enough for Colt, until repeated broken promises and hurtful words spilled forth to sting his soul. Colt wondered if he and Julia would ever be a couple to the world, if she truly wanted him or if she was just playing with a boy from the flats. Questions that would forever remain unanswered when Julia dies in a tragic car accident days later.
As Colt tries to remain indifferent to the news of Julia's death he is silently mourning her, unable to confide in anyone. The pain of what he is enduring is unbearable but he already knew how to keep a secret. Until, one day when Julia's brother approaches him with a stunning revelation; Julia's diary of their secret year. Yet instead of devouring all her words at once Colt decides to read it entry by precious entry. Savouring the words that flowed out from her while trying to move on.
Relying on the diary to help make sense of everything Colt forges on with teen life trying hard to forget the girl that was never his, but secrets never stay that way for long...
Bravo to Jennifer R Hubbard for creating a novel that I CANNOT stop thinking about days after reading it. I am a true fan of the male protagonist point of view and Colt's voice was true and clear to me. I got a good sense of who he was and his desire to comprehend what his relationship with Julia meant and why he needed to know. He harboured guilt about her death and believed he could find his peace in her diary. I understood his pain and the fact that he could not easily get Julia out of his mind. That realistic approach was refreshing, because the heart is slow to learn.
The supporting cast of characters are well fleshed out giving this story depth and Colt's dysfunctional family added a bit of color to the pages. I adored his brother who seemed to be the voice of reason during the times when Colt needed it most.
The Secret Year is an amazing book dealing with love, loss, pain and the truth that can set you free. A must read for 2010 and once you read it you will want everyone you know to read it so that you can all talk about it. Yes, it is that good. (less)

A truly phenomenal series finale that had the best of everything: Intrigue, non-stop action and romance. So damn good that I want to read it all over again.
I picked up CHAMPION and was quickly thrust back into it's world of tension and high stakes. It doesn't take long before this quasi status of peace becomes threatened and at the heart of it all means a sacrifice that is too heartbreaking to contemplate. I could not wait to see Day and June together again and when they do...gah!! my heart...so many feels and that is just the tip of the iceberg with CHAMPION. I was a bundle of nerves throughout this whole book and could not breathe easily until the very last word.
I could go on and on about this book and could never really capture everything that this book was. Let me just say that fans of this series would not be disappointed and if you have not read this series then you seriously need to.
CHAMPION is the best example of how a series should end, with heart and moments of sheer suspense that I was left breathless. Marie Lu is a genius and I adored this series finale despite going through a pack of tissues, but let it be known that I would gladly do it all over again. (less)

A Gothic, enigmatic, steam punk adventure tale that will slowly seep into your mind and flourish there.
Catherine Fisher's INCARCERON is a novel of a an unprecedented penitentiary system created in a dystopian world that is self sufficient, complex and vast beyond any one's imagination. All of those that inhabit the prison can never leave and It is believed by those outside of it's walls to be a Utopian society but nothing could be more contradictory.
INCARCERON centers on two characters from both sides of it's prison walls. Finn is on the inside, part of a cut throat group of bandits that terrorize it's inhabitants. Although Finn is part of this group he does not feel as if he ever truly belonged to it or to Incarceron itself. A fact that his blood brother Kiero does not understand but tolerates because it is believed that Finn is a star seer; a person receiving guidance from Sapphique the only person to have ever escaped Incarceron.
Claudia is on the outside, daughter to the warden of Incarceron. Engaged to wed the Queen's son and too smart to withstand the insipid folly of court politics, but an unfortunate pawn in her father's wishes for power. She dreams for a different life, one of freedom from society's tyranny and for her lost betrothed whom had died many years before.
What happens between these two character's that sets them on the same path is mind bending. You will be sent on an adventure that is full of plot twists and drops that will leave you thunderstruck and just as you think you have it all figured out the rug gets pulled from underneath you and all you want is more more more. I will admit to having a bit of a struggle within the first fifty pages because the world that Catherine Fisher created is so complex and detailed that my mind was working overtime to process it all but I am glad that I was tenacious and stayed with it. Once I absorbed this new world into my brain I was reluctant to leave it and was consumed by it's story and cast of memorable characters that rounded out this astonishing book. I cannot wait for Saphhique the next book in this series.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure, intrigue and imaginative story telling at it's very best.

It was not the first novel that I have read by this author so I was intrigued.
This story centers on Maddie, a curious young girl who lives in a small Scottish village that one day is visited by a traveler and his mute companion, Paul. It is not long before a dark shadow falls about the village and bad things begin to happen. Paul is gravely injured by a creature one night and while he is on the mend Maddie falls for the handsome stranger that is not mute at all and it is then that Maddie learns of Paul's secrets and the danger that keeping them can mean for her village and all of those that she loves.
Although I found this interpretation on werewolf lore to be interesting I did not find it engrossing and at times I found myself meandering through the story that was somewhat vague and esoteric. The character's of this story were also wrapped up in a cryptic fog that did not allow me to invest a care for any of them and believe me, I wanted to. What I did appreciate about this story was the overall atmosphere that came across as dark and mysterious for it provided enough menace to draw a few good ripples of fear. I only wish that it could have been enough to make me enjoy this story a bit more than I did.
