I should have listened to my instincts, because I am left perplexed, unsatisfied and disappointed.
I waded into SEVER wanting to see how Rhine's storyline was going to progress. I wanted to know if she would be reunited with her brother, would she and Gabriel ever see each other again and would she find the truth to Vaughn's madness? It wasn't long before I became irritated with Rhine's procrastination and indecisiveness. I could not understand her lack of action even though she had reason, it just did not seem like enough. Honestly, if she wanted to see her brother she should have gone as soon as possible and not wait until a cataclysmic event drives her to finally seek him out. On her journey to locate him she encounters an a former nemesis and that's when the plot begins to get a bit muddled, viscous with lies and deceit and you are left despising and an old adversary even more then imagined possible. UNTIL, you encounter another plot twist and then yet another that completely floors you. I know I could not seem to take any more these revelations were becoming a bit forced and by the end I could see it coming from a mile away. The element of surprise now gone. You cannot keep pointing the smoking gun in the same direction without someone eventually beating you to the punch.
I was completely perplexed by Rhine and her feelings for Gabriel. Did she or did she not love him? I really could not tell, she barely mentioned him in SEVER and when she did it was for a fleeting moment that was so quickly dissolved that I would forget about him. Then I could not fathom her feelings towards her husband, because...yes they were still married and she never took off her ring (another action I could not understand) but she claimed to not love him so what was the deal? And don't get me started on how that was resolved due to an action that was not of her own will. It was as if she wasn't in charge of her destiny although that is what she claimed to want.
Then as the I am near the end of this novel and hope for the light at the end of the tunnel, a plot twist that is so reminiscent of my katniss-primrose feelings leaves me fuming. Really? At that point I was no longer a willing passenger but I needed to know how things would end and as the last word was read I could only sit back and ponder over what I just read. I honestly felt that it was too rushed and would have liked a little bit more information of how things worked out in the longer haul, but it would not have made me like this book any more.
Although SEVER was not my cup of tea I can say that I like Lauren Destefano's writing style and that is the main reason I stayed with this series. Her words are well crafted, drawing out a myriad of emotions while creating a well paced plot while constantly leave you on your toes. For fans of this series it is a conclusion, but is it the one your seeking? It is totally up to you.

It's premise appeared unique and my interest was piqued, so I decided to give it a try and was pleased with the results.
One of my favorite things about INCARNATE is the relationship between Ana and Sam. I relished witnessing their interactions, the old push and pull of romantic tension that was well displayed. It has been a long while since I have read a book that has an unabashed love story that is truly heart warming and genuine. My jaded personality would normally roll my eyes at the very sweet nature of their connection, but all I could do was smile. I also think Jodi Meadows did a good job at setting up this unique world, the concept of regenerated souls is not new but she presented it in a manner that sparked your interest.
Yet, despite the fact that I enjoyed this novel I did find certain aspects of the story a bit repetitive. I did not take me long to understand what a "new soul" was but did it have to be religiously repeated? NO! but you were left with no doubt to what Ana was. But when you try to arrive at the decision as to who she is and why she came to be then you find yourself in a bit of a pickle. As the story progressed and truths came to light I was still a bit perplexed.
INCARNATE is a good read if you don't mind a story with a good dose of romantic tension and fantasy. A great debut effort and I am eagerly awaiting it's sequel.(less)

The characters in this inventive story live forever, yet are not vampires but true immortals who struggle with something far greater than a simple person can conceive. IMMORTAL BELOVED is narrated by Natasya-- an immortal who has lived nearly 500 years who is barely surviving her very existence when she is pushed over the edge one evening and decides to flee everything and everyone she has known. She leaves London and relocates to a small town in Massachusetts, to live with other immortals that seek peace and meaning to their life. Thus begins Nastasya's true journey to self acceptance and worth
I truly enjoyed IMMORTAL BELOVED because the lives of the immortals, especially Nastasya, are revealed slowly but carefully, leaving you wanting to know more about her past as well as her present. Tiernan does an excellent job of weaving Nastasyas two stories (past and present) through a series of flashbacks and present day that makes the reader understand not only who she is, but what she's fighting against. You become her champion as you witness her life unfold before your eyes and laugh out loud at her snarky comments that lend light laughter to this dark fantasy tale. The romantic element in this story is a welcome surprise that does not overwhelm the entire storyline but adds a bit tension that leaves you satisfied and very curious. I also enjoyed the fact that the story does leave you with a big cliffhanger ending yet you are left wanting to read more about Nastasya and what will happen next. (less)

I picked it up, skimmed the back cover and thought it was interesting enough to proceed. I was eager for an dark and edgier read and I could not wait to delve into the ominous mystery that surrounded this novel. Although DEAD BEAUTIFUL by Yvonne Woon is original and well detailed, I was vexed by it's lethargic pace and discontinuous plot line.
As I began reading DEAD BEAUTIFUL my curiosity was soon piqued as strongly as Renee's incessant need to uncover the truth about her parents death. Yet, it was not long before the story began to push my limits on patience. One issue I had in particular was Renee's incomprehensible ignorance to the obvious issue she had surrounding her. This bothered me for she seemed a smart enough girl, fearless and outspoken; the perfect combination for the investigative adventure that was part of this dark mystery. And while on the subject of dark mystery there is no one more dark and mysterious than Dante Berlin. He and Renee are drawn to one another and when together he feels more alive while she seems to feel her energy drain. Hmmm...I wonder why?
Although I found the pace too slow for my taste, I did appreciate the world building that was key to DEAD BEAUTIFUL. It was original, mysterious and inventive and I especially enjoyed the historical groundwork that peppered the storyline. But despite that fact I had problems with the overall flow of the the story, it seemed a bit jumpy and repetitive leaving me to re-read passages just to make sure I had not misread anything.
As I originally stated. I did not go into reading DEAD BEAUTIFUL with any expecations but I feel that this story could have been so much better. It had great promise with a unique plot line that just did not fully deliver. Yet, I know that there will be some readers that will enjoy this story with it's heartbreaking romance, mystery and ominous tones. (less)

I got bit.
I got bit.
Three little words never had such a profound meaning.
As I began reading Raised By Wolves I begrudgingly uttered "not another werewolf book" but before the first chapter was completed I was held a captive audience between it's pages. I could not get enough of this story and did not stop until I reached the last page only to feel the loss of having it end.
Jennifer Lynn Barnes has crafted a story that is by far one of the most well written and engaging young adult paranormal novels around. It is full of twists and unexpected turns that are brilliantly conceived and delivered.
Bronwyn Alessia St. Vincent Clare is a teenage girl that was raised by wolves, since the tender age of four, when a rabid werewolf went rogue and killed her entire family. She was saved by Callum, the Alpha of the territory who gave her to the only other human in his wolf pack to raise as their own daughter. You would have thought that being raised by wolves would have made Bryn obedient, responsible and terrified but nothing could have been further from the truth. At a young age she closed her bond off from the members of the pack, wanting to be her own person without having to obey pack laws and as she got older she constantly pushed her limits. When Callum orders that Bryn come home before dark and has his body guards become her shadow she knows that something is wrong but no one will tell her what is going on. Bryn decides to take matters into her own hands and her actions set off a chain of events that have her finding Chase: a caged young man that changes into a Wolfe before her very eyes. A confession is made and Bryn cannot believe what she hears.
I Got Bit.
Those words connect her to Chase and she feels compelled to see him again but not until she meets Callum's demands...and the price for breaking any of them are greater than anything Bryn could have imagined. Despite that fact she cannot help the pull that she has towards Chase and that he is the only one to have the answers to her desperately needed questions. Allegiances to her pack be damned no matter the consequences.
Raised by Wolves is a story that tugged at my heart and pulled on my emotions in such a way that I was left speechless while other moments I went all primal with shouts and growls of protests. Bryn's proved to be a worthy heroine that is smart and "scrappy" as her need to remain independent from the pack is paramount and while you may not agree with her actions you can understand exactly where she is coming from. I admired how Jennifer Lynn Barnes was able to convey Bryn's emotions so clearly that there were passages that were utterly palpable. Besides enjoying Bryn's character I totally adored her best friend Devon. How original to have a werewolf (who could be an alpha someday) be totally metro sexual while constantly pulling upon beloved movie characters and dialogue to express himself. Yet, Devon is just a favorite among a cast of many characters that lend to this story's magnetism.
The only complaint that I have is the immediate connection between Bryn and Chase because it seemed a bit too fast-too soon, but as the story unfolded I was able to comprehend their kindred joining.
I highly recommend Raised by Wolves to those readers that love a great paranormal book because it is an intricate story, full of action, romance and literary magic that will leave you gripping your book as the enormous plot builds and explodes unfalteringly before your very eyes.

Seriously, I cannot begin to give this book enough praise and feel that I could not do it justice, but I will try. Like the feeling you get when you listen to that perfect song, when the melody and lyrics combined make you smile for days, yes it is that good.
Lesley Livingston has crafted a gorgeously seductive novel, rich with faerie magick, breathtaking romance and some of the most vividly engaging characters you will ever behold in print.
DARKLIGHT, the continuation novel to WONDROUS STRANGE is centered on Kelly Winslow, a girl living her dream of performing on the stage in NYC. Not to forget that she comes from faery royalty(whom both parents she despises), that her love is in another dimension finishing off the marauders of the wild hunt, and now she is being hunted by someone with a major grudge. As if that isn't enough a startling secret is revealed, something that can change all their lives forever.
I am completely enthralled with this series because it is literary magic. The words that flow from it's pages will grab you and hold you hostage and once you begin this adventure you will never want it to end. An amazing read for all ages, a true gem filled with romance, danger and excellent story telling and now I cannot wait for the conclusion to this series. The only thing I regret is that it is almost over, but that only means that I get to read them all over again.
I had the added bonus of listening to it (which is also read by Lesley Livingston) and she did such an amazing job. That is why I got to this book at this point instead of last month. I enjoyed listening to WONDROUS STRANGE so much that I had to wait and listen to the audio version of DARKLIGHT. If your a fan of audio books then this is the one to attain for Lesley's perfect pitch, timing and brogue's are music to your ears.

A Gothic, enigmatic, steam punk adventure tale that will slowly seep into your mind and flourish there.
Catherine Fisher's INCARCERON is a novel of a an unprecedented penitentiary system created in a dystopian world that is self sufficient, complex and vast beyond any one's imagination. All of those that inhabit the prison can never leave and It is believed by those outside of it's walls to be a Utopian society but nothing could be more contradictory.
INCARCERON centers on two characters from both sides of it's prison walls. Finn is on the inside, part of a cut throat group of bandits that terrorize it's inhabitants. Although Finn is part of this group he does not feel as if he ever truly belonged to it or to Incarceron itself. A fact that his blood brother Kiero does not understand but tolerates because it is believed that Finn is a star seer; a person receiving guidance from Sapphique the only person to have ever escaped Incarceron.
Claudia is on the outside, daughter to the warden of Incarceron. Engaged to wed the Queen's son and too smart to withstand the insipid folly of court politics, but an unfortunate pawn in her father's wishes for power. She dreams for a different life, one of freedom from society's tyranny and for her lost betrothed whom had died many years before.
What happens between these two character's that sets them on the same path is mind bending. You will be sent on an adventure that is full of plot twists and drops that will leave you thunderstruck and just as you think you have it all figured out the rug gets pulled from underneath you and all you want is more more more. I will admit to having a bit of a struggle within the first fifty pages because the world that Catherine Fisher created is so complex and detailed that my mind was working overtime to process it all but I am glad that I was tenacious and stayed with it. Once I absorbed this new world into my brain I was reluctant to leave it and was consumed by it's story and cast of memorable characters that rounded out this astonishing book. I cannot wait for Saphhique the next book in this series.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure, intrigue and imaginative story telling at it's very best.

Carrie Jones' newest installment in the Pixie saga does not fail in grabbing your attention and holding it captive. CAPTIVATE is a great read, total fun and a perfect follow-up to NEED.
CAPTIVATE continues shortly after Zara and her gang of awesome (Issie, Dylan and Nick) imprisoned her needy pixie dad and his followers out in the woods. Pixie sightings are on the rise so it is no surprise when Zara encounters a powerful pixie tied up in the woods, the shocker is the Valkyrie that is holding him captive. Yup, I said Valkyrie! If that isn't enough for Zara to process she begins to turn blue and cannot seem to keep from getting dizzy. As she saves this new pixie from certain doom the information that he now gives her causes to seek answers from the most unlikely of choices. Now Zara has the answers she seeks, but with that knowledge comes certain heartache and new fears. Will she be able to make the right choices and save the ones she loves? or will she regret her actions?
I enjoyed CAPTIVATE for being pure entertainment and holding me within it's pages. I always enjoy Nick and Zara's interactions and was more than happy with how things progressed with Issie and Dylan. The only gripe I have is that I believe the story took a bit to get going. I was more than eager to get the ball rolling and once it did, I was more than satisfied. I am eager to see how Zara's choices comes into play in the next book of which I am sure to read.
So, if you have read NEED than you must read CAPTIVATE and continue the adventure, and if you haven't started on this series then you need to :) (less)
