The very idea of reading a book about teens and cancer makes me want to go into a fetal position, cover myself and hide. I'm totally serious. My heartThe very idea of reading a book about teens and cancer makes me want to go into a fetal position, cover myself and hide. I'm totally serious. My heart is a fragile thing when it comes to this subject matter, but a good friend demanded that I read THE F- IT LIST by Julie Halpern and vehemently insisted that I would love it. I am pleasantly surprised to say that while I did not "love it" I did enjoy it and did not regret my time spent reading it.
By the time I finished the first chapter THE F- IT LIST I was already engrossed within it's storyline. I wanted to know....no, I needed to know what was going to happen next. And as the story unfolds you get to see how much Becca truly means to Alex and how she will do anything for her friend despite everything that has happened. This willingness makes me appreciate Alex despite her acerbic nature and flawed ability with denial. What I also appreciated and enjoyed was the conversations that Becca and Alex would have with one another, some would actually have me laughing so hard I would have to stop reading. They were honest and a bit raunchy, reminding me of conversations I have with my good friends.
Alex's journey in helping her friend with her "bucket list" opens up memories of the past and uncertainties for her future that she could have never imagined. But it is her journey that is the most compelling aspect about this book, despite a few moments when I think I could just reach through the pages and brain dust Alex and say "HELLO! What in the F- are you doing?" Yet, It was good to see Alex's character mature and change as she dealt with matters of the heart and life.
I gave myself a few weeks to read and process how I felt about THE F- IT LIST. At first I was a bit emotional about all the feels, tissue was used and I wanted to run to everyone and tell them to read this book. Yet, after some time I find that while it is a great read some might find it's sexual situations a bit heavy for a younger teens (but ok if a parent can discuss any questions afterwards). Hey! don't get me wrong I actually enjoy that about this book but I would recommend this book for an older teen.
THE F- IT LIST is novel that is unforgettable about living your life to the fullest, honestly and basically just living....more
