What a very, very HOT book. While it is true that this book follows Ms. Cole’s normal recipe for her past books, it is the first one I have read that ended on a cliffhanger. Mind you, the main protagonists got their happily-ever-after, but the brother got the cliffhanger and it was a doozy!
The plot was as I said, typical of Ms Cole’s writing – a brooding ultra sexy male has been tortured by his enemy, and of coursed his fated mate is his enemies daughter. And to make things even worse she may or may not be mortal (I don’t want to spoil this for anyone!). He also has a tortured childhood which will make being with his mate a tad difficult on him.
Chloe is one of the coolest protagonists to come down the pike in many reads. She is a champion soccer player who has just been selected to be part of the Olympic team, when she is kidnapped by some witches and auctioned off to the Lore. Of course, her father is a major bad guy and everyone at the auction know this. And I DO mean majorly bad! But, here comes her fated mate to the rescue! And off they go into the sunset, but it sure isn’t going to be all hot sex and cherry tree petals. Oh no!
Ms. Cole is adept at writing character that you would love to be friends with. Her ability at turning out the perfect descriptive passages, the perfect amount of brutality and the sexiest of sex scenes makes her one of the best authors of this genre.
This book had some of the hottest scenes I have seen in a long time, in a mainstream novel. Will or hero has just the right amount of dark brooding and inner-dialog without getting to the point that you would like to put him out of his misery. The heroine Chloe stays strong even though some horrible things will be said and done to her, and I adored her for it.
Ms. Cole wrote the perfect novel, if a little similar in tone to her first book “A Hunger Like No Other”.. Excuse me while I go re-read both of these and I really wish I could find myself one of these brawny, sexy, Scottish Lykae? ...more

It will leave you confused, disgruntled and crabby sincePale Demon- Kim Harrison If you are thinking of starting, this series with this novel DON’T! It will leave you confused, disgruntled and crabby since you won’t know who is who and what the back story is. BUT I really do recommend that if you love witches, demons, vampires, fairies, pixies elves and assorted other types of creatures then this is one of the best series you will find that will appease your hunger.
Here is a little back-story; years ago a genetically engineered virus has wipe d out almost all of humanity leaving a clear playing field for the other creatures. They call themselves the “Inderlanders” and by coming out of the closet, they have changed the entire face of the world. Rachel Morgan is a witch who had worked for the government as a bounty hunter…now she works for herself along with her roommate who is a living Vampire.
In this book we find Rachel being forced to travel cross country to prove her innocence of practicing Demonic black magic. Should she be found guilty, a lot more than shunning will happen to her. She may be forced to live in the Demonic Underworld - forever. Now Rachel , the Pixie Jenks, the living vampire Ivy and sort of arch enemy and Elf, Trent Kalamack have three days to get to the west coast…San Francisco to be exact and to prove her innocence. Which may actually be harder than it sounds…since well...Rachel isn’t all that innocent anymore. With assassins after Rachel and a ferocious Demon who can pretty much end the world on their tail, is it any wonder Rachel is a wee bit cranky? But Rachel is smart and pragmatic and will do whatever it takes to stay alive and to keep her friend safe-even damn herself to the Demonic Underworld.
Out of all the books so far, I think that this one will go down as my all time favorite. It shows Rachel growing and having a lot more faith in her ability. She isn’t fighting the petty fights and has come to understand that sometimes you have to be a little bad, in order to do a lot of good. This book, for those of you who have been following the series, is also pivotal as far as Rachel and Trent go. This may be the precursor to Rachel and Trent actually (finally) admitting their attraction to each other. There are many surprises in store for those who are going to pick this book up. Some you may not like, but I suspect many more that you will love. Also don’t be surprised if you find yourself doing some crying while reading this book!

I am also wondering if this will become a longer running series as so many characters seem to be screaming for their own books.
Candy has lost it all...even her mother's nest egg in the housing crash. At one time wealthy now she is back in the tiny town of Bigler, North Carolina and sleeping in her Mother's retirement home! Candy meets up with the Sheriff who she knew when she was growing up and had a crush on. Now that both he and she are older, it is more than a crush. The steam between them will take off the wallpaper in your house if you aren't careful.
Of course to keep things hopping there is drug related crimes being investigated by Turner, cakes being baked by Candy, young men who have improper thoughts (really improper) about Candy,Turner's late wife and the circumstances behind her death and why he feels so much guilt, and even the fact that they are a bi-racial couple may be giving them some problem. But the biggest obstacle in their happiness will be Candy's own insecurities and the fact that she hasn't quite figured out yet to be happy with what you have.
I was doing a bit of re-reading of Ms Donovan's books the last few days and found that she has grown as a writer, but she has also grown in her usage of sex in her books. While they have always been steamy, I just don't recall, nor have I found yet, that Ms Donovan using some of the cruder words in her frank sex play. Nor have I found her to have such serious back-story. One of these is refreshing, the other is a little disturbing to me, but not problematic. I just hope that Ms Donovan isn't going to take her books further and go all erotica with them! ...more

Lynsay Sands does it again! While I do so love her Argeneau Vampire series, I adore her Historical Romances even more. “The Countess” ( book 1 in series) is everything that Ms Sands is known for and then some. “The Countess” is charming, funny, sexy, intriguing, and clever and a true joy to read for historical romance fans. When Christiana’s mean, cruel and totally unsexy husband Dicky Fairgrave drops dead of what they assume are natural causes, she and her sisters decide to put him on ice (literally) and go on as if life hasn’t changed except for the better. After all her sisters still need to come out so why ruin life for them? The very first night of Dicky’s death Christiana decides to go to a ball with her sisters. Now they are absolutely positive Dicky is dead, so imagine their surprise when Dicky walks into the ball. Richard Fairgrave has just come back from America to confront his nasty twin brother who has stolen his identity as well as married under his name. When Richard meets his “inherited” wife at the ball he finds her to be a little less than he expected, but with time and an accidental bit of whiskey on Christiana’s part, Richard soon finds that he really, really wants to keep his “inherited bride” and to do that he must build her trust while finding out just what the heck happened to his brother who was murdered.

Marcus Holroyd, the Earl of Chatteris and Honoria Smythe-Smith grew up together along with her brother Daniel. They never thought of each other in ‘that’ way before. Now Honoria is a woman grown and Marcus had been tasked by Daniel to watch over Honoria. You see, Honoria has grown into a beauty and Daniel has had to flee the country and can’t look out for her himself. So, Marcus has done just what any other self-respecting best friend would do and watched for her well being- scaring prospective beaus and just generally being a guardian angel of sorts.
An unexpected (of course!) accident occurs due to Honoria causing mischief while trying to get out of the ‘husband hunt’ her mother has in store for her. This mischief leads to a near tragic accident for Marcus and leaves him near the brink of death. While Honoria and her Mother nurse Marcus back to health, sparks start flying. (naturally!) Of course as you know if you are a Julia Quinn book fan, you will remember what it is like to have the characters sit through one of the Smythe-Smith musicals…well guess what is in store for poor Marcus…and Honoria?! A perfect scene.
Julia Quinn is one of those Historical Romance authors that I’ve come to depend on. Her books are generally filled with realistically portrayed characters, a good sense of the author’s knowledge for the period, mischief of some sort, comedy, a bit of heartbreak and of course, love with a capital ‘L’! An Ms Quinn does not disappoint with this novel. If anything, I think that this is her best one yet and I’ve read them all. In fact, I think it is time for me to re-buy all her books for my Kindle so I will never be without them again! ...more

We are treated to Maggies' story, but for those of you who have read the first novel How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf you will be happy to know that Mo and Cooper are in secondary character parts.
Don't worry if you don't have the time or inclination to read the first novel. (although I'll bet you will go back to read that one and the third one that is soon to be published How to Run with a Naked Werewolf) Ms Harper does an excellent job with back-story so you never feel left out of the loop. However, for fans, she doesn't overindulge in back-story and make the series readers feel like most of the book is filler.
There is enough sarcastic banter, romance, heated encounters, mystery and misdirection to keep almost any reader happy.
Maggie is a werewolf and is her packs Alpha and Nick has come into town searching for the truth behind the werewolf legends. Maggie needs to misdirect Nick and his multiple PhD's from the truth about werewolves, for everyone's safety. But, something draws Maggie to Nick like a moth to a flame. Heated encounters ensue, but Maggie needs to look out for her pack.
There is more action that will keep you reading and trying to figure out just who is the bad-guy. This is a fairly fast and light read, designed to entertain and to not overly tax your brain. This is just what I needed on a cold and dreary winter's day. ...more

Of course because this is a romance it doesn't hurt that they are both gorgeous and sexually attracted to each other! While fighting off Jacks overbearing mother, the paparazzo and various others who would like to be in Jack's bed both figuratively and literally and while trying to keep this relationship to a business deal...things change, feelings change, people change. And thankfully they all change for the better.
While the idea that a woman could become kept in the loosest non-sexual sense of the word, may rankle a few readers, I would go for it anyway since things all even out in the end and truth and justice will prevail.
Ms Donovan is one of my very favorite contemporary romance authors. She consistently write good comedy, excellent characters that you could just see yourself being friends with and she always keeps you on your toes with her plots....more

The Christmas Knight (Zebra Historical Romance) Sinclair, Michele
“He loved, and was loved in return.”
I picked this novel up quite by chance and found myself ignoring everything around me as I devoured it. I have not read such an intriguing and character/relationship driven novel in quite some time.
This novel is about a Knight named Ranulf de Gunnar who has been ordered by his new King to take over Hunswick Castle. While on his boat trip back to the castle an accident occurs on the ship he is on and a man Laon de Breton, dies. While heaving his dying breath he forces Ranulf to promise to marry his youngest and most beautiful daughter. You see he has three daughters and the eldest is not supposed to be attractive to men.
Well neither is Ranulf attractive to most women. You see, Ranulf has been scarred horribly in a fire and is also missing one of his eyes. His disposition is well less than amiable and he has no trust for the opposite sex. Ranulf’s bitterness in how he has been treated show through in almost everything he does.
On his way to Hunswick Castle he spies a man and a woman fighting in the woods. He realizes the man is intimidating the woman and fires of an arrow. And, this is where our story really takes off. The woman was Bronwyn de Breton the eldest daughter of Laon.
Bronwyn de Breton has two younger, more attractive sisters and knows that the youngest sister is being forced to wed Ranulf. Lillybet cannot bear this idea so the three sisters devise a scheme in which Bronwyn pretends to by Lillybet. Then they plan to leave the castle in a few days to go be with relatives.
Ranulf sees through Bronwyn scheme and soon is attracted to her, but he feels there is a story that he is not being told. And there is. It seems that another Knight, a neighbor of the castle wants Bronwyn and will stop at nothing to have her.
While this story does have action, it really is not until the midway point that it will take place. Instead of relying on the action to move the plot, the author has told a superb story based on a character/relationship driven plot. It was a fascinating look at what happens when someone keeps the truth from someone else merely for his or her own good.
The author gives us the added bonus of starting each chapter with the history, religious and secular, of the entire Yule season as seen in the 11th century. ...more

I loved it from beginning to end. I adored the characters –even the ones we are supposed to dislike! This was a sweet, gentle wonderfully written story of a young woman battered down by circumstances and her very selfish family who finally does something for herself. She takes off to visit a girlfriend in New York City and to take a nanny position, thinking that she was going to be close to her pal. What she was not aware of is that the job was in Maine-but that actually didn’t matter since the job fell through, only she didn’t find out until she was in America already!
Fate, luck or circumstances put Sophie in the path of a very wealthy New Yorker –Matilda-who invites Sophie to her home in Connecticut for Thanksgiving. Here she is thrown together with Matilda’s grandson Luke who has a proposal for Sophie.
If you have read the synopsis you already know a lot of what is going to happen –sort of- what you aren’t going to get from it is the wonderful way the author has of bringing these people to life. Imagine poor Sophie, a girl who loves to talk second hand clothes and turn them into something like art thrown in with a bunch of uber wealthy, snobby Conneticutites for a holiday they don’t celebrate in the UK. So poorly the author could have handled this, but it was such a treat for me to read.
However, do not worry! Just in case you think it is only Sophie who has to suffer from ‘fish-out-of-water-itis, Luke will be suffering the same thing too. And it is a hoot to see such a stick-up-the-bum young man have to deal with it.
In the background, Matilda is working her magic trying her hardest to get these two together,
So it is basically a story of a poor but sweet and smart young woman eventually falling in love with a slightly older wealthy man –two such different backgrounds. In addition, you might think that there could not be anything new here that it is clichéd and trite, but you would be very wrong to think that way and to pass this book up. ...more

If you loveIf you love the writings of say Patricia Briggs---if you love action, suspense, shape-shifters and other things that go bump in the nigh. If you love romance, but not of the "bodice ripping" ilk---then this is the series for you. I can't believe that we are going to have to wait so long for the next installment in the Kate Daniels series. Booo! Although we do have Dali and Jim's story coming in Hexed releasing on June 7th.
If you have never read any of these books and are contemplating starting with this one, please don't. You really owe it to yourself to start with the first book Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, Book 1)and if you have a kindle or the app for you computer also make an effort to get "Curran: Volume I (Curran POV) and Fathers and Sons (Curran POV) as well as the novella Magic Mourns: A Companion Novella to Magic Strikes:A Penguin eSpecial from Berkley
Seriously---this had to be the best book so far in this series.
Kate is now fully mated to the Beast Lord and as we know from the last book, out on her own working privately. Trouble comes soon in the shape of an unridden Vampire and soon after goes even more down the tubes with a neat little plot involving a mad inventor, a machine that will bring tech back to the world and a group of men and women determined that magical creatures and all magic should be wiped off the face of the earth.
Kate learns that the life grew up with was NOT what was true and now has to deal with several hard facts about her Sainted Mother and Voron. Kate will also have to deal with a suspicion that Curran may not want her for HER, but what she can do for him and the Beasts.
A side story involving Julie her Ward took my breath away. And Hughes little play on the very last page makes this very nearly a cliff hang in scope.
There are enough side plot to keep you in suspense and several plots that will take several more (at least) books to examine. This book also asks us to re-examine everything we have learned in the last 4 books and to keep an open mind.

While this book did have some continuity problems, it was not anything I really can't handle. I loved this introduction to this series. The witty *rolls eyes* banter between the protagonists is a hoot. And it is especially wonderful if you read the companion piece, which will give you the point of view of some of the story from Curran.Curran: Volume I (Curran POV) It will also help with some of the other books also. It makes it easier to see how the series is going to move. I have read the entire series and short stories, etc and I can tell you that the writing team that prints under the name of Ilona Andrews is by far one of the best out there.
They took what is now an overly-saturated genre and brought it back to life - each book holds more kick-butt action than anything else. There is romance but at this point in the series, it is merely hinted at and will build gradually like a real relationship. There is mystery with each book, flawed but wonderful characters. These are characters that you might want to have as real life friends. *sigh* If only I really could have them as pal.
This is an Urban Fantasy...NOT a romance, so please expect a LOT of action, a LOT of fighting and a LOT of bodily fluids. When this team writes a `bad guy' character, they really do an excellent job of it. The character becomes one you love to hate and hope that they get everything that is coming to them!
I don't think that you will regret starting this series, especially now with the 6th full book about Kate Daniels coming out on the 30th! There is still just enough time (maybe) to read all the preceding books!

Let me say right off the bat –any author that has the nerve and the sense of humor to have her female lead nFirst Grave on the Right –by Darynda Jones
Let me say right off the bat –any author that has the nerve and the sense of humor to have her female lead name her breasts “the right one is Danger and the left one - Will Robinson” is going to be one I need to keep very close tabs on. Of course, she named her other girly parts, “but they don’t get out as much”. *chortle* Perhaps I have a skewed sense of humor, but I spritzed and snorted my coffee all over the place when I read that exchange between Charley Davidson and her nemesis Garret . And when you hear her say the name Garret you can almost hear the sneer in her voice.
A fine mix of Mystery, Speculative fiction, Comedy and action with just the tiniest slightest soupcon of Chick Lit thrown in just to keep things shakin’. I don’t really know what to say that probably hasn’t been said, but this book was funny, refreshing, sexy without being ultra vulgar oh and did I mention funny already? I mean to me some of it was hilarious. If you took the best of MaryJanice Davidson’s early Betsy the Vampire Queen and melded it with Janet Evanoviches, Stephnie Plum---you still wouldn’t get half the laughs, half the mystery or half the fun. I already have the hard-cover on pre-order and that doesn’t come out til August ..darn it all!
Ok but you may want to know a bit about this book don’t you? Well Charley sees dead people to put it bluntly. She has her PI license and help the APD with cases and her Uncle is the cop she helps the most. She helps the murdered dead get justice. Most people don’t believe she sees the dead, interacts with the dead, and as the Grim Reaper helps the dead pass over. That’s right she is THE Grim Reaper as in the only one…or is she. Now lately she has been having some really good dreams if you know what I mean. Dreams that include one hot, studly Entity (her name for him) but lately she is coming to find out the The Entity may not be a dead guy or a ghost at all…oh my no. But, you’ll just have to read this to find out just who and what he really is and just why was he in Prison. It will floor you. Oh and did I mention a really, clever mystery within all of this funny stuff?
There is enough everything to put this Author at the top of my To Buy list, and to know that this is a debut novel just absolutely floors me! Odd for me to have thought of this but for some reason I love the cover art too. I’m tired of the cartoonish covers or the uber broody dark covers that usually go along with some of the books in this genre. I think that the cover artist deserves kudos too this time around as well as the author. I try not to over populate my reviews with 5 star ones...but darn it, this one really deserves it for the out and out pure pleasure it gave me. ...more

Will he go back and try to regain his old life with his family or stay in Alaska where nobody asks any questions... On this particular day Alex goes off into the wilderness to clear his head and to think about his future. The First Lady is clutching a hand written letter alluding to the fact that the plane was carrying something big and top secret and. now that item is missing. The letter also alludes to the group "Tangent" Travis being the good ex-cop that he was tracks and finds the murderers along with Paige and Peter Campbell a father and daughter team who have been kept as sort of 'hostages". Travis watches silently while Paige is being horribly tortured while her father is forced to watch. At that minute Travis's fate is decided for him, as he decides to help these two people, and change his destiny...or does it? Little do we know at this point that Travis's life and his fate, his destiny has been determined for a very long time. While with Paige he learns of this phenomena called simply The Breach and the good and bad it can do for mankind.
.Tightly plotted with engaging and realistic characters for this specific genre. This is a fast paced, action filled sci/fi fantasy that can and will make you hair curl. There is enough tension and suspense for suspense lovers, enough of a mystery for mystery lovers, enough graphic violence and improbable circumstances for the horror fans and just enough fantasy blended to make this something very fresh. And just when you think you have the whole thing sorted out and the book is going to have pat ending, Mr. Lee throws in another monkey wrench and you have to read until the very last page to say - "okay I think I get it...or do I?"
It ends with a cliff hanger that I never saw coming. ...more
