Earlier today I was discussing my love for the book The Unlikely Disciple (a story of Kevin Roose a Brown student coming to Liberty in search of a better understanding of Christian culture) with one of my good friends when I was interrupted by another student on the bus. She told me, "That dumb secularist didn't even get the whole point of this college." And said, "How could he come here and not find God?" While I totally understood what she meant by this comment I was also a bit offended she would call Kevin Roose a dumb secularist. Kevin Roose was at an Ivy league school and at the age of 19 wrote a brilliant novel. She continued to tell me that it was not that impressive that Kevin had come to Liberty University due to the fact that she had many Christian friends who went to secular schools. This is where I got a bit upset. I understand that Kevin Roose wrote all about the school, Jerry Fawlell Sr. and a lot of interesting events that happen at this college. I do also recognize that he seemed to overlook Jesus. Yet he still came, he searched, and he did see we were different. What my peer on the bus failed to recognize was the lesson in the book. WE NEVER KNOW WHO IS WATCHING! One of my favorite parts of this nonfiction novel is at the end where Kevin tells all his friends at Liberty what he was doing... his roommate apologizes! He says "If I would of known I wouldn't of acted the way I did." Can't we just take a moment to reflect and realize that even on a Christian campus that everyone here MIGHT NOT BE "SAVED". To the other comment about having friends that go to "secular school." JESUS went to where the people were. JESUS called US to go to THEM not the other way around. Christian means Christ like. We are supposed to strive to be like Christ. Instead of being angry at Kevin for not getting Jesus maybe we should reflect on ourselves and wonder why didn't he see Jesus? The lesson in the book is a self reflection. He was a complete outsider, a Quaker child, a genius from Brown, who came among Christians. Yes, I was highly disappointed that Kevin did not become a Christian BUT I am overjoyed that he came here! He saw us as different and maybe one day he too will be one of us. So instead of critiquing people why don't we just look in the mirror and ask ourselves "Am I Jesus to the least of them?"

Today I started my girlfriend's favorite book Captivating by John and Stasi Eldredge. There are three things that I have learned in the past two hours of reading and thinking. #1 Emily is an amazing girl and I'm pretty much the luckiest guy on Earth to have her. #2 Guys suck at understanding girls. Being one of those guys who thought he understood girls in high school (arrogance is quite embarrassing) I just would like to say to every guy out there. "WE SUCK AT UNDERSTANDING GIRLS." Growing up I thought because I understood the two concepts "Girls like bad boys." And "Nice guys finished last." I could fully understand the concept of the girl's mind. Man was I wrong. #3 The women's heart longs to be romanced. As guys' we FAIL. Epic giant fail. I look around and I see more guys in my generation looking at porn and degrading women in their mind than I see men buying girl's roses and trying to win their hearts.
Men were created in God's image but women were taken from men therefore also created with God's image. Often times we make women feel like they are not skinny enough or too emotional but sometimes we need to be thankful that they exist! God knew exactly what he was doing when He made women. Kiss your mom on the cheek. Tell your girlfriend she's beautiful. Treat the women around you with respect. Stop looking at porn because it degrades women and turns them into objects rather than sisters in Christ. Most importantly start meditating on the fact that the heart of a women is a reflection of the heart of God.

There are so many things I love about this story but my favorite thing about it is the symbolism. The characters as well as the city represent so much more than what appear to be.
