I didn't read anything about it, not even the plot summary, so I had no idea what it was about. I picked it based on the fact that it was available to listen to on my phone and that I thought the cover was kinda cute and I liked the title. That being said, it ended up even better for me because the narrator was none other than Jim Dale (who also narrates the Harry Potter series which I LOVE listening to).
So this story is about two magicians (illusionists) that pit two young individuals against each other in a type of duel. You don't learn a lot about the rules and conventions of the duel up front, and not even until quite near the end do you get any details that have any weight. The arena for this duel is a night circus.
Now when one thinks of duels, one would automatically assume a loud and raucous type of event with a lot of action etc... I liked the fact that this duel was quiet and methodical in its undertaking. I enjoyed all the characters from the start. I really enjoyed the artistry of the circus and how there weren't really any freak shows, but rather only interesting and intriguing acts.
One of the best lines that stuck out to me was when Celia tells her father that he was a coward for not just facing Alexander in their own battle to test their power, but had to keep using other people to do their dueling.
I am usually not fond of the love story aspect, but I really enjoyed how the author had Celia and Marcos fall in love with each other. There was never any really sappy, roll your eyes moments (for me anyway) but it felt powerful and cool the way they energized everything else when they were together.
I liked so many aspects of this book. It was kind of funny to listen to Jim Dale tho, cuz sometimes I had to remember that he was voicing Alexander rather that Albus Dumbledore.
I'm glad I read this book and it will stick in my brain for a long time. ...more

The premise seemed very interesting and I had high hopes. However, I was not as thrilled with this book as I was hoping to be.
The main characters, Zeeta (a 15 year old girl) and her mother Layla, travel around the world because Layla is a free spirited person that has adult ADD, (my opinion), and teaches English wherever the end up. The book starts with them moving from Thailand to Ecuador.
The descriptions in the book are great, but the rest of the book, the story, the characters, pretty much fall apart for me. I found reading about the "stable daughter" and "flighty mother" aspect was tedious and often unbearable. I didn't like Wendell at all and found him whiny, stupid and just unbelievable with the choices he made in the book. I was secretly hoping he would get offed.
There really isn't much of a story line, but I did enjoy the culture lessons. The Rumi (is that how you spell that? I listened to the book so never saw) quotes about drove me bonkers.
I didn't like how Layla was "saved" in the end or how she changed so drastically in the first place. Again, so unbelievable.
I was disappointed in the story mostly because I had high hopes with the premise of these women traveling the world. Too bad. ...more

This book was amazingly fantastic! I am going to be sad to leave this world and am so sad that we have to wait so long for the next one!!! (kind of like waiting for Sherlock series 4).
Sanderson is indeed a master of his art. His world building and character development are top notch. Right up there with Frank Hebert. But, I have to say that Sanderson, in my opinion, has passed Herbert for me as the best. I am in love with this story and the characters and the world he has created in this series. It's too bad Sanderson can't clone himself so he can write day and night to finish all the series he is working on. Still waiting for the next book for Rithmatist and Steelheart.
One of my favorite scenes was when Kaladin and Shallan killed the chasamfiend!!!! HOLY OHMYLANTA in heaven!!! AMAZING!!!!...more

This is a story about a dwarf named Jepp (pronounced Yepp) and his journey to figure out who he is and if he is a slave to his stars of destiny.
This story was beautiful and poignant. I was pulled in by Jepp's honesty, naivete, kindness, sadness, determination, forgiveness and many other qualities.
In the two years we see in his life, he experiences loss, humiliation, friendship, hardship, education, and love among other things. His story is one of being an outsider and finding out who he is, and how to be happy and part of the world instead of always allowing circumstances to dictate his course and his happiness.
I would actually love for my two older boys to read this book. It gives one hope and demonstrates how to be diligent, hopeful and good.
I enjoyed it a lot and was sad to have it end and say good-bye to Jepp. ...more

The story is about these kids who have to basically go back in time with their Infinity Ring to fix history so that the current world power gets overthrown. I am assuming that each subsequent book will be about different "cracks" they will repair.
This isn't the most amazing book I have ever read, but it was enjoyable and I will probably keep reading or listening to the series. ...more

However, it was slow and fairly boring, and it was pretty obvious what was going to happen.
So, the premise of the story is that NASA wants to go back to the moon, but to get funding they turn it into a whole world wide lottery to allow three teenagers to go along. They claim they are looking for some sort of mineral, metal(?? can't remember) but in reality they are going back up to find out what really happened to the last Apollo mission they sent up and barely made it back.
There were a couple of chapters that were totally pointless. The old man that lived in the nursing home and had a failing memory, but then suddenly, after seeing pictures of the moon and the base there, snaps into full memory, only to then die without really giving us any info at all. And then the chapter about Simone breaking up with her boyfriend was so pointless I don't even understand why it was even in there.
In all, the story lacked intensity, plot development, character development. The only good thing about it, is that it ended much more realistically than a lot of stories like this would. ...more

This is a story about these people that get epic powers (known as Epics) and rather than being friends with humanity, they are destructive and horrible to humanity. There is a small group of people that fight against the Epics, known as the Reckoners. They want to take down all the Epics and fight for humanity.
I loved how this story had a lot of exciting powers and some twists and turns. I'm super excited about the next book in the series. ...more
