The section that dealt with the concept that a misbehaving child is trying to tell us “I don’t feel I belong or have significance, and I have a mistaken belief about how to achieve it.” was really helpful to me. It goes into detail about why children misbehave: power struggle, attention, etc. And it guides you on how to deal with the misbehavior. I really felt like this is a much better, peaceful way to discipline where your child will actually learn life lessons rather than just getting punished. I agree that children need love and encouragement- they need to be taught not scolded. We are not inspired to do better when someone makes us feel worse for making a mistake- when they add blame, pain and shame- and children won't be inspired to do better under those circumstances either. This has given me a new way to look at discipline and I hope I can continue to remember to use these concepts, b/c I know when I do there is more love and peace in our home. ...more

She sounds like a good Christian writer. However, I was a little skeptical when I read about this book. It seems a little far-fetched that the adoptive parents have so little parental rights. But then I thought about the situation and how heart-wrenching it would be to loose one of my kids, and I thought this might be a good read. We'll see... I'll keep you updated.
OK, I just finished this book. While at times the authors style of writing seemed a little juvenile/corny it overall was a really good book! I was brought to tears many times. The storyline was captivating and heartwrenching. The adoptive parents love their son so much. They provide a wonderful life for him, are great parents and they are so loving and sweet with him. He is their world. And then the biological father gets out of jail finds out he had a son who was given up for adoption without his knowledge (making the adoptive papers fraudulent b/c he didn't sign them) The court rules that the boy needs to return to his bioligical parents, and of course as the reader you want him to stay in the only home he's ever know with the parents that love him rather than enter into a home w/ a guy that's been in prison for domestic violence. But then a part of you sides w/ the bioligical mom who had a really hard time giving up her son in the first place. She has thought about him and ached for him over the years, but she always thought he was in the right place until the Dad got out of jail and convinced her he was changed and he wants to be a Dad. This story is gripping, and as a mom I felt like my heart would break right along w/ the mom in the story when she thought she was going to lose her son. ...more

It is a diary of a pioneer women, but you'll fly through it just like a novel. She is funny, and for having such limited education she writes really well. She is such a strong woman! I laughed out loud at this part, she had just met some girls who wanted to travel with their wagon party and she says, "None of these girls rides horses bare back only in buggies and wagons and they was sure surprised when I took my rifle and Rose (her horse) and went past the trees and brought back a deer for venison stew. They said so many times oh my, oh my that I thought I might of stood on my head and sang a song it was so strange to them." This woman was amazing and some pretty remarkable things happened in her life. Her hardships make my life seem so easy. ...more

I thought the first 300-400 pages were really exciting and good, and even better than the movie (which I loved) but after that it got really boring to me and o felt like I was trudging through it- it kept putting me to sleep and finally I gave up on it and moved onto something else. ...more

I escaped to it whenever I could... stayed up late reading it... I just couldn't put it down. I got hooked from the beginning; it's a real page turner. It really made me think how one person can change someone else's lives. These poor children in this book started out with such a promising future; they were happy, fun children who lived the first 3 yrs of their lives in such a loving environment... only to have it drastically changed one day. These twin girls go through one tragedy after another, but through it all they have each other. I became very attached to these girls and their story. I kept thinking that even though they had so many struggles, there had to be a happy ending...
There was a point in their lives (as I'm sure there is in all of ours) where if things would have gone one way they would have had a completely different life.. it's just interesting to think of the two directions their lives could have taken- one so good and one so sad and miserable. They could have had everything they ever wanted, but it was torn away from them. ...more
