This installment focuses a lot on Josef which was great as he has been a somewhat shallow secondary character up till now. Turns out he is a Prince! And mommy dearest, I.e. The Queen is wants him to come home because his small country is about to go to war with an immortal wizard and they need help. Thankfully though he brings along Eli and Nico for some back up.
Sadly though the target of this war is not Josef, or his country. It's Eli. And both the Empress and the Shepardess are determined to get him.
Thankfully we get back most of our characters in this book including Miranda, Banage, Slorn, etc. Plus we learn a lot of new crazy facts in this book concerning the individual characters, the world itself, and what possibly lies outside the world.
Seriously this series is so amazing and has consistently gotten better and better. I am already starting the last book in the series and am d that there aren't more!!...more

Basically it boils down to this...I am so hard up for anything Veronica Mars after the recent movie reigniting my love for this universe that I jumped to read this book. But then it took me forever to read it because well...Rob Thomas is a phenomenal tv writer but a terrible book writer.
The whole thing had a great plot, with twists and turns and intrigue, but it read like a script.
It was all TELL and absolutely no SHOW.
But like I said the story itself was fantastic, except for a SHOCKING LACK OF LOGAN.
I MISS YOU LOGAN!
Anyways, it was great to get more insight into the new VM universe and I am glad that I read it, but not sure I would read others...who knows though. ...more

But after I learned a bit more about her and demons in general I got pulled into the story a bit more.
This installment had a lot of action and a lot of heart wrenching moments compared to the last two books. The author definitely cranked it up a bit this time.
Also, a couple of new characters who were introduced but not fleshed out in the second book really got more screen time here like the some of he members of he league of Shadows, Slorn and his daughter, and other Spiritualists. I really liked learning about the different types of spirit talkers with the Wizards, spiritualists, and shapers. Each have their own connection to the Spirits and thoughts on how the world should be treated with them in mind.
I am really excited that I have found this series and am sad that Audible doesn't have e audiobooks for the next 2 books. Of well I shall just have to request them from the library ASAP!
If you are looking for a new series I can finitely recommend this one as being fun, intriguing, well written, and well paced! ...more

I was hoping to know more about Alec and Magnus though so I greedily read it! Maybe it would be better if I were reading the snippets in order, but that's just the way the library works!
Anyways, it was total adorable fluff and I'm sure I'll read the others when they are available for download. I mean come on, they are only 30 pages anyways. ...more
Oh Eli you little shit. I do adore you. You are an ass. You are conceited. You are single minded in your determination to be an idiot at times.

Even I can't explain it. I really thought his self centered arrogance would annoy the crap out of me yet it just Endears me. What's with that??? And poor Miranda, and the others having to deal with it! Ha!
This series is so fantastic and I highly recommend it. The magic, and setting in this universe is so well thought out and fascinating. I love that everything has a spirit from the greatest winds and seas to the smallest brick and roofing tile. Plus their personalities are just as varied says any humans could be. The story and pacing are excellent and I found myself listening to the audiobook whenever I had a free moment. Same as if I had been reading the real book or on my iPad. I would have been sneaking glances at the pages any chance I got.
So glad I have found this series and cannot wait to continue on! ...more

Again though I kept thinking this was a YA book and not a UF book. McKenzie reads as a 17 year old when she is actually 26. Just because she is a virgin shouldn't have made her seem like such a child. Thankfully though this series is full of character growth. For McKenzie, Aren, and Kyol. Each have definitely evolved from when we first met them in he first book. The ending of book 2 definitely plays a role there too!
The politics in this book almost reached a boiling point too. There was so many times when I was just kinda hoping McKenzie would walk away. Let the damn Fae figure out their own shit. Cause wow was there a lot of it. But she sticks it out. Learns new skills like how to defend herself and really devoted herself to their world. While she gets all this growth and attention though other characters were totally left out in the cold like damned poor Shane.
But the second half of this book (view spoiler)[interestingly enough AFTER McKenzie loses her virginity (hide spoiler)] it finally starts to read more as UF and less as YA. plus the violence which has always been present totally steps up. There was 2 deaths, one right after another, that totally took my surprise and broke my heart a bit!
Totally glad I found this series and read it cause I really liked it. I will definitely be reading more from this author! ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>...more

His goal is to steal as much as possible, in the most outrageous ways possible, all in the name of upping his bounty worth. He uses the spirits that are present in all living things, but always with their permission, and is followed around by the one of the worlds greatest swordsman and a child with a demon growing inside her. So yeah, his antics, and his companions make him highly wanted throughout all the kingdoms and Miranda Lyonette, a Spirtualist, one who works with spirits has been set to catch him. Only what Miranda found was a criminal much worse that Elo, and soon she realizes she must join forces with Eli if she can ever hope to take down this new threat.
Holy crap, Eli is one of the cockiest characters I have ever read, and I went into this expecting to totally despise him but I actually enjoyed him. He made me roll my eyes and laugh with almost every line. I can definitely see him being a huge turn off for a lot of people though. He walks carefully the line between amusing and annoying, but easily slips to one side or the other! Miranda was actually not as likable as I expected to her. I knew she would be righteous, strict, and a complete believer, but I didn't expect her to be so cold to anyone that wasn't a spirit. Even fellow humans she didn't seem so keen on except for her Mentor. She would protect them, yes, but she was always so distant and removed.
I really enjoyed this book though for the world building. Everything everywhere has spirits. From the seas to the individual bricks in the walls. They all worked together in tandem with each other and with humans. They had their own distinct personalities and ranged from stupid to intelligent.
I listened to the audiobook for this story and totally recommend it. The reader was fantastic with the different voices, emotion, and pacing! I would definitely listen to other books by him! ...more
Well was a solid ball of confusion, enjoyment, more confusion, adventure, confusion, scariness, and finally confusion.
Seriously I don't know if it waWell was a solid ball of confusion, enjoyment, more confusion, adventure, confusion, scariness, and finally confusion.
Seriously I don't know if it was because I was listening to the audiobook or what but this book was difficult to keep up with. The multiple races, languages, settings, etc didn't help either.
The weird part was that despite the confusion I did still enjoy it a bit. The action scenes were tense (but still...yup...you guessed it - confusing) but they had great pacing.
The characters though left a lot to be desired. The main character Kaylen spent more time inside her head that not. She was overly introspective and often times naive. Once she made up her mind to think a certain way it took hell and high water to change her ideas. Severne, a boy she knew from her childhood that is now a hunky, protective man doesn't seem to have much of a personality beyond doing everything for kaylen even when she doesn't know about it. I didn't really get much of a grasp of his personality beyond he's feelings for her. Teamaris, the dragon, was the only character I really enjoyed because he was smart, mysterious, and had a great dry sense of humor. Beyond those 3 everyone was pretty much relegated to their one characteristic and were not allowed to ow beyond that.
I don't know. Maybe I'm judging it harshly because I did enjoy it while I was listening to it even though I didn't really get what all was happening. In hind sigh though I am just seeing all of its problems. Reading the synopsis for the next 8 books probably didn't help either. They all just cemented my ideas that Kaylen is indecisive, overly in her head, and naive.
(Oh and because I know this matters to others - as it matters to me - the love triangle in the book has yet to be resolved!!! 9 books and the characters still can't work out their shit??? That more than anything tells me that there is little to no character growth and thus not worth my time.)
All in all guess I'm glad I read it since I didn't hate it, but I won't be continuing on with the series.
Thank god I only got the first book and didn't buy the 1st 3 like I had planned!...more
