This book had so much going for it, it was fraught with tension and action, I wasn't sure what would happen next, I was all ready to give it 5 stars but it had to end on a "bloodydamned" cliffhanger, and one that makes me wonder if I want to read the third book when it comes out. Not a great way to take an explosive series to the next level....more
I was initially wary of this book, afraid it was a rehash of the Hunger games, which was not a series I enjoyed, but afexciting start for a new author
I was initially wary of this book, afraid it was a rehash of the Hunger games, which was not a series I enjoyed, but after a slightly confusing start the book became mesmerizing.
It is some time in the future and we have conquered the stars, or at least started to. Darrow is a Red, a young man who mines the ground under the inhospitable surface of Mars for Helium 3. He is told that this will allow for a future that will make Mars a habitable world for other Reds like Darrow and his gentle, beloved wife Eo. Mot to mention for the Golds who rule them and the other humans who have been separated into castes based on their birth and what they do. Darrow is a Helldiver one of the most dexterous and strong young men who operate the huge mining machines of the Reds and he hopes to bring home to his clan a prize for mining the most but nothing is ever straightforward and the consequences of the day begin a series of events that may change the world order.
I really enjoyed the character as well as the world building in the book and hope that the second book lives up to the legacy off the first, if it does and the finish my s strong I could definitely see movies being made from them....more

This was a great series over all. The main objective is returning the U.S. to human not zombie control and in pursuit of that the Wolf squadron starts clearing the bases along the southeast coast. There are successes and failures both in finding survivors and finding survivors that would be useful to the effort. The book is again told mostly from what is going on with Faith and Sophia although by the end we learn of Steve's big plan to clear large areas. A satisfying end to the series although I would still like to read more maybe find out what happened to Tom, Steve's brother and the rest of the bank staff that were in the first book. And who developed the virus and what happened to them when they were eventually found out-if they survived....more
Wolf squadron still roams the Atlantic looking for survivors of the "zombie apocalypse" but now Steve Smith, and oh so slowly is the darkness rebuffed
Wolf squadron still roams the Atlantic looking for survivors of the "zombie apocalypse" but now Steve Smith, Commodore of the fleet has an even bigger goal - to start clearing towns and finding a place to make vaccine so that everyone can survive and humanity can be reborn. Faith and Sophia are growing up, if not much in age, than in responsibility and maturity. My big Disappointment was not to see anything of the mom Stacey though, she pretty much disappeared by the middle of the book, it was all Steve, Faith and Sophia. The scope of the book reads as does the cast of characters and it is still a strongly written, tightly woven, action packed novel....more
There are so many zombie books and end of the world books out there it is tough to find one with a new take on it but this one has.a resounding start
There are so many zombie books and end of the world books out there it is tough to find one with a new take on it but this one has. The book begins with the words "Alas Babylon" which is the start of one of the best apocalyptic SF books written, but this adds a dual expression virus which is an innovative way to explain "zombies". It follows the Smith family as they try to keep themselves together in the face of this fast spreading apocalypse, something they have been preparing for but hoping never happens, and turns from a simple trying to survive to helping others. There is horror and humor in a very engrossing read....more
