The hero in this book was portrayed so well, we find out his motivations and backstory. I loved his connection to the heroine and how wonderfully they treated each other. I also loved how he was willing to go to any lengths to protect her and make her happy.
So many exciting things happen in this book that will completely change the future world in this series, I can't wait to see what happens next.
So my end thoughts - amazing story that blew away my expectations! I love this series so much!...more

Once in Albany, she plans to beseech her uncle Lord William Wentworth for help but along the way to visit him she is kidnapped by Shawnee Indians and her entire future changes.
Major Connor MacKinnon is now in charge of MacKinnon's Rangers after Iain retired to take care of Annie and their children and Morgan was kicked out for his marriage to the French Amalie. Connor is in a bad place emotionally, he feels a lot of guilt for his harsh actions to French soldiers while he believed his brother Morgan to be dead. Lord William commands Connor and Joseph, his Mahican friend, to find Lady Sarah and rescue her. They go searching for her expecting to find a spoiled princess and instead find a courageous young woman.
Connor and Joseph arrive at the Shawnee village and go thorough some trials to save Lady Sarah, who impressed them with her strength and bravery in the face of her captors abuse. Connor wins her freedom, but not without consequences which bring him and Sarah together. Over the long, dangerous trip back to Fort Edward, Connor and Sarah forge a relationship based on mutual attraction and admiration but know there is no hope for a future between a high born English lady and a Scottish frontiersman. But then a surprising turn of events causes Connor, along with help from his family and friends, to fight to have Sarah in his life forever no matter the danger and obstacles.
I loved Connor's book! What I love about all three MacKinnon brothers' books is that they are wonderfully written romances that are actually romantic and a joy to read. The hero and heroine are both good people who stand together despite what the world throws at them. This setting and time period (American colonies during the French and Indian War) fascinates me and the author has a way of bringing it to life so I feel like I am hiking through the forest, running from danger along with Connor, Sarah and Joseph.
Connor is a great hero who rescues Sarah from a harsh fate then finds himself falling in love with his worst enemy's niece. He tried to do what he thinks is the honorable thing and let her go, but fights for Sarah (view spoiler)[ and his unborn child (hide spoiler)] when she is put in harm's way by a vengeful Lord William. Sarah is an endearing heroine, you feel her love of music which colors her life and feel sorry for her rigid upbringing. She faces a situation that is completely foreign to her but comes through it with grace and courage, learning a lot about herself in the process which helps her stand up for what she wanted when it counted. I like how she never betrayed Connor even when it might have made things easier for her.
The background characters help make the story. Joseph is a great part of the story, he and Sarah have a nice brother/sister bond. I hope to see his story soon! Wentworth first makes you want to hurt him badly, then pulls an act which brings some redemption - we will see what his story becomes when Ms. Clare writes it, I have faith she can make him redeemable as a hero. I loved seeing a bit of Iain, Annie, Morgan, Amalie and the children. The Rangers make some smaller appearances, plus there is a great farewell at the end of the book that will leave you chocked up!
Defiant is a brilliant finale to the MacKinnon brothers' story. I love all three books, which tell the story of how Iain, Morgan and Connor survive the frontier and find love despite the war they are fighting. The ending of Defiant made me tearful and nostalgic to be reaching the end of the MacKinnon brothers stories but it was a great ending. I love this trilogy, Iain, Morgan and Connor have a special place in my heart for being such sexy, honorable men who really know how to protect, love and care for their women.
Lady Anne Burness Campbell was betrayed into 14 years of indentured service after her uncle accused her of being a thief because she knew he killed heLady Anne Burness Campbell was betrayed into 14 years of indentured service after her uncle accused her of being a thief because she knew he killed her mother. She chose to be branded a thief rather than return to her Uncle Bain's house and possibly be murdered herself. Her uncle branded her on her inner thigh instead of her thumb so that she would never be able to sleep with a man without being found out as a thief. Anne was sent to the American colonies where she was sold into service to a frontier couple in colonial New York. Her owners are a harsh couple who beat her often because she does not know how to perform the tasks they expect of her.
One day while she is in the barn milking the cow, she hears gun shots and screaming. Realizing that Indians and French are attacking the farm, she goes out the back of the barn and runs through the snow toward the woods. The attack party sees her and pursues her through the forest, intent on raping and killing her. She slips down a rocky slope where the men finally catch up to her but she doesn't give up and keeps on fighting. Just as she is about to be hurt, a big man comes out of the woods and kills all of the men attacking her.
Iain MacKinnon is an exhiled Scot whose family immigrated to colonial New York after losing everything at Culloden. His grandfather was The MacKinnon, laird over his lands until the Argyll Campbells and English defeated his clan at Culloden, killing women and children as well as wounded men. Iain and his brothers Morgan and Conner grew up on the frontier, learning how to hunt and track along with their Indian friends, the Muheconneok. Iain was pressed into service for the British crown after a British Colonel accuses him of a murder he didn't commit then offers him a choice of starting a Ranger company for the Crown or hanging. Since Iain was a Catholic Jacobite, he knew the courts would not listen to him over a British Colonel so he was forced to lead a company of Rangers who fought for the British along with his two brothers who joined with him.
Major Iain MacKinnon is on a scouting mission to Fort Ticonderoga under orders to move swiftly to keep from being seen. He is not supposed to help any colonials under attack because it would give away the location of his company of Rangers. He sees Annie running through the forest and has to make a terrible decision, to save her from being raped and killed which will bring danger to his men because the shooting will bring the French and Abenaki to their position, or let her be killed and follow his orders. Iain is an honorable man who cannot stand to see such a courageous woman harmed in front of him, so he makes the fateful decision to send the rest of the scouting party away and save her on his own.
Iain saves Annie's life but she is hurt from running through the woods barefoot. He carries her on his back through the woods trying to ahead of the large force of Abenaki on their tail who want vengeance for the men he killed saving her. Iain vows to keep her safe and carries her for the next few days on his back, always just ahead of the Abenaki. Annie realizes that no one knows who she is and she could be free from her indentured service if no one finds out. She tells Iain that her name is Annie Burns because she is afraid he will hate her if he finds out that she is an Argyll Campbell.
They reach the fort where Iain is sentenced to 100 lashes for saving her life. Annie tries to get the British officer to relent but he refuses. After being whipped, Annie nurses Iain back to health. They both have feelings for each other but fight the attraction for different reasons. Iain is stuck in the Rangers until the end of the war and does not have anything to offer a wife until he can take over his farm again. Annie cannot sleep with Iain because he will find her brand and know she lied to him. But the passion between them refuses to go away and eventually ignites, leaving Iain and Annie to come to terms with the consequences.
Surrender is a beautiful love story full of action, adventure and passion. Iain MacKinnon is one of the best heroes I have ever read - honorable, protective and caring toward Annie and revered by his men. He does so much for Annie, from carrying her on his back for days after saving her life to doing everything he can to keep her safe from those who would do her harm. Annie was a sweet girl who deserved the protection she gets from Iain after being betrayed by those closest to her and shipped from a life of privilege to a very different life on the frontier. The passion between Iain and Annie is intense and wonderful. The romance in the book just makes you feel good because it's so beautiful. If you like the movie and setting of Last of the Mohicans, you will enjoy this book. The characters and setting of this book come to life and take you on a great romantic adventure. I have read this book three times and enjoyed it more every time. Surrender has earned it's place as my favorite historical romance book....more

The story is about two high school seniors from two very different lifestyles who fall in love despite their differences.
Brittany Ellis has the perfect life from the outside – she is beautiful, rich and popular at school. However, her home life is not a fairy tale. Her older sister has major health problems which she helps out with as much as possible because her parents can’t seem to deal with her. Her mother has anxiety issues and expects Brittany to put forth a perfect image at all times while her father is always working. Brittany also has the perfect football player boyfriend to complete her image who she didn’t see over the summer only to find things strained when school begins.
Alejandro Fuentes is a Latino man from the south side of town. He is the man of his house, taking care of his two younger brothers and his mother. His secret wish is to get out of the violent lifestyle he lives and go to college but he knows that isn’t possible for him. He joined the Latino Bloods gang to protect his family because he had no choice, now he is stuck because you don’t just walk away from a gang – you either die or wish you would have died if you tried to leave. Alex refuses to deal drugs but he does have to collect money from people and resort to violence, which is all he has known on his side of town.
On the first day of class, Alex and Brittany get into a clash before school over a parking lot incident. Then they are both in the same chemistry class and are assigned to work together as partners. Alex thinks Brittany is a fake white b*tch, while she thinks he is a scary druggie gang member so they don’t exactly hit it off. Alex makes a bet with a friend that he can sleep with Brittany before Thanksgiving, so he decides to try to seduce her. As they start to get to know each other, Alex and Brittney find that despite outside appearances, they have a lot in common. They both hide behind a fake persona they created, Alex as a tough gang banger and Brittany as a perfect popular girl.
Alex and Brittany are both attracted to each other but Brittany has her perfect football player boyfriend. She is very attracted to Alex but doesn’t see how they could be together. She eventually gets the courage to go after what she wants in life instead of maintaining a façade, so she dumps her boyfriend and goes after Alex. Her feelings aren’t one-sided but Alex lives a dangerous lifestyle that he isn’t sure Brittney should be anywhere near. He starts to think maybe he can actually graduate and hope for a future but he doesn’t see a way out of the gang lifestyle he is stuck in. Brittany believes in him and thinks he can have a great future, but getting out just may kill him.
I loved this story! I was so engrossed in this Romeo and Juliet style romance. Alex was a very sexy Latino man, he was a good man despite his violent background. He didn’t want to be in a gang but was stuck because he lived in a dangerous place and needed to protect his family. I liked Brittany too, I was a little annoyed with her when she didn’t break up with her boyfriend right away when he was being a jerk then I remembered how long I stayed with my jerk high school boyfriend and realized we have all been young and dumb. I was impressed when Brittany threw caution to the wind and went after Alex, accepting the fact he was in a gang but wanting better for him because she knew he could do better.
I loved how the author didn’t water things down, the characters seemed very realistic. The gang lifestyle shown was gritty, dangerous and scary but she managed to show the different facets of it. She also showed the Latino culture in great detail which I enjoyed. None of the characters were two-dimensional, they all had layers to their personalities. Tough guy Alex had a vulnerable side and there was a funny scene where his buddy spilled something on his pants that made it look like he peed himself. I also like how the high school seniors drank alcohol at parties, had sex and occasionally smoked weed – because that is realistic for the setting, I hate when people act like it doesn’t happen.
I highly recommend this book! I loved reading about Alex and Brittany, it’s a story I won’t forget anytime soon and plan on reading again. Alex was a great character, who can resist a bad boy with a good heart and the good girl who won’t give up on him. Don’t be worried about the Young Adult label, these two are very mature for their ages. There is one love scene that is not very detailed but the story is full of sexual tension and hot chemistry between the leads. There is an HEA at the end of the book, we know they are going to be together and it makes sense for their age and place in life. The story is told in first person from both points of view, which actually worked wonderfully since the author is very talented....more

Ella was a heroine who I could identify with, especially about trying to help out your family and the constant guilt you feel when you can never do enough. She has a very complicated relationship with her sister but she is there for her when her sister needs her. Ella gets a call from her mother saying her younger sister left her newborn baby at the mother’s house and disappeared. Ella knows her mother cannot handle a baby, so she drives to Houston to try to figure out what is going on. Once there, she has to take over responsibility for baby Luke and try to figure out where her sister ran off to, along with finding out whom the father might be. Ella hears that Jake Travis, a rich local businessman, might be the father, so she goes to his office with Luke to demand a paternity test but he denies ever sleeping with her. Despite their rocky first meeting, Jack and Ella have a very powerful attraction to each other from the start. Jack finds an apartment for Ella and proceeds to help her as she adjusts to being a sudden mother to a newborn. Jack falls hard and fast for Ella but she has a lot of problems with commitment due to her bad childhood. Not to worry though, Jack is more than enough of a man to help her through her problems!
Jack Travis was quite a hero – he was sexy, responsible and the type of guy you would dream about having in real life. He loves Ella just the way she is and does everything he can to support and help her. He is a manly Texas man who loves hunting and fishing but he still helps with the baby and putting together a crib. I love the fact that he didn’t want Luke wearing pink socks or having a “girly” bunny rabbit, so Jack bought Luke a nice “manly” toy truck. I love how Jack was dominant and possessive toward Ella but he still gave her time and space to work out her feelings. There were a lot more love scenes in this book than the last two, which was great because Jack was quite a lover – nice and dominant in the bedroom just the way I like them. The whole story was sweet and wonderfully romantic, I loved reading it.
All three of Lisa Kleypas’s contemporary heroines have been wonderful. She manages to write women who I can identify with because I have some of the same life experiences. She does a great job characterizing the various feelings and emotions women go through as a result of bad childhoods and dysfunctional families. All of her heroes have been just amazingly sexy and powerful. I would have a problem choosing between them, but Hardy and Jack would have the top spots. Hardy was just such an overwhelmingly sexy man with a rough edge, while Jack was the sexy, dominant man who was always fun to be around. I can’t wait for Joe Travis’s story, I hope it’s as good as the first three Travis books!...more

The story just grabbed me from the beginning and kept me entertained the entire time. Hardy Cates is such a hot, sexy hero! Haven was a bit harder for me to identify with than Liberty was but I still liked her. Her horrible relationship with her ex-husband was hard to see but at least she was able to get out with the help of Her brother Gage who was wonderful in this book too. I enjoyed seeing more of Liberty, Gage and Carrington.
Hardy was a wonderful hero, he was very patient and kind to Haven with her lingering issues. I wouldn't have minded seeing even more of their relationship but at least this book had a lot more romance than Sugar Daddy.
Blue Eyed Devil is getting five stars from me for a great story, a good romance and one of the sexiest, most wonderful heroes I have read about!...more

She is a dominant alpha female in her pack which makes her fear that she will never find a mate because she would need someone more dominant than her and she doesn’t think she would be able to submit to a mate the way she would need to. Riley is a stubborn, protective, by-the-rules man who is helplessly drawn to Mercy’s fiery personality. He grew up taking care of his younger siblings and is now the highest ranking lieutenant in the Snow Dancer pack, so he can’t imagine having a mate like Mercy who insists on taking care of herself.
Mercy and Riley are thrown together often as their respective pack’s representative in the alliance between the cats and wolves – especially now as attacks on humans, changelings and Psy are beginning to escalate. The sexual attraction between Mercy and Riley leads them to start a forbidden affair because they just can’t keep their hands off each other. Mercy knows Riley is a dominant wolf who will try to take over her life, which she thinks will kill a part of herself. Riley feels like he needs to protect those he loves, especially after what he sees as a failure to protect his little sister Brenna from being attacked. Mercy and Riley start to care a lot about each other but both are afraid of the consequences of staying together. They both dedicate their lives to protecting their packs – plus cats and wolves just barely get along. Can they both survive a mating – and do they have any choice but to try since their feelings are so intense?
I loved this story! Mercy and Riley were such a great pair, they really complemented each other in every way. The love scenes were scorching hot! Riley certainly knows how to please a woman. Both Riley and Mercy had to come to terms with each other – Riley had to accept that he could be dominant with Mercy while they were making love but he needed to see her as a partner at all other times and not try to shield her, while Mercy had to accept and trust Riley enough to allow him completely into her heart as a mate.
The storyline of the series progresses as we learn more about the battle for and against Silence in the Psy web and more clues about the Ghost’s identity. Sienna and Hawke have small parts in the story, I can’t wait until we see what happens between them. Lucas and Sascha receive wonderful news that I have been waiting for! I also found out the answer to the two questions I have been wondering about since I heard of the pairing between Riley and Mercy: What type of children will a wolf and cat have together and how can two dominant sentinels from different packs actually make a mating work – but you will have to read Branded by Fire to find out for yourself!

The writing was very good this time: the narrative flowed well, the romance was there and the storyline was furthered. The entire story packs a serious emotional punch, you will root for and cry with all of your favorite characters.
I don't really review these books because it's too hard for me. I think everyone takes something different from the books in this series but for me I love the stories. I love finding out more about my favorite characters from previous books and falling in love with new ones. J.R. Ward gets serious props for taking a rather negative sounding character like Rhevenge, who we know as a drug dealer, pimp and bruiser and fleshing him out so well that we are rooting completely for him. He was a very three-dimensional character who had done some bad things in his life for good reasons - always to protect those he loves at great cost to himself. He sacrifices a lot for his loved ones and never expects anything back. Ehlena was a worthy mate for Rhev, she was a strong woman who refused to let the challenges in her life bring her down. That is one of the qualities I find most admirable in a person, so she is probably one of my favorite heroines in this series. She puts herself out there for Rhev and comes through for him when he needs it the most.
Random thoughts on the book and characters:
Wrath and Beth - One of my favorite parts of the book was seeing the growth in their relationship. I love this couple so it was great to see them up close again. Wrath had a lot to come to terms with in this book but was able to make progress with the help of his shellan, who was a rock for him when he needed it the most. Parts of their story brought tears to my eyes because they were so intensely emotional. There some really hot love scenes too!
Rhevenge and Ehlena - I love them as a couple. I liked Rhev coming into the book despite what he did, but once I knew even more about him and his devotion to keeping his mother and sister safe I fell in love with him. He was in a bad situation because of his need to care for his females but bore the burden all by himself and did whatever he had to do to keep Bella and his mother from being hurt. He finally found someone for himself when he and Ehlena got together, it was wonderful to see someone care so deeply for him. These two lonely people finally found a safe place and comfort with each other.
Rhev and Bella - The last scene was wonderful where he thinks he will always be her Rooster.
Ehlena to Rhev - Hilarious line by Ehlena to Rhev: "It's probably quiet because of the ball gags next door" LOL, even though I love V and Jane that line was pretty funny.
John Matthew and Xhex - Oh John Matthew, what the heck are you thinking? He needs to grow up and stop acting like a bratty teenager. You don't give up on your loved ones no matter what. Tohr finally reached out to him and I felt John was pretty selfish in his actions. As for the stuff with Xhex, I think he way over-reacted. He has NO clue what Xhex has been through in her life and never really tried to get to know her. He is only thinking about himself and his pity party, not about her. I hope he gets his head out of his rear end in the next book as he searches for her - because she is going to be in a very bad place.
George - How cute!
Mary - She is a wonderful person and a blessing to her friends. She may not be beautiful outside but she has a wonderful soul. I love how she is always there for the Brotherhood and the other shellans, even willing to listen to the horrors that Z endured despite the cost to herself. I am glad Rhage loves her as much as he does.
Payne - That female scares me! Think about a female V - she is going to need to find a very tough guy. I really think she may be a female Brother eventually.
Lash - I don't really care for him or the parts with him, but I realize we need to know his motivations and actions because they will affect the Brotherhood in the future.
Xhex - Wow that girl is scary with a knife! I must say I do think all rapists and abusers deserve what Grady receieved - but I am a bit blood thirsty. Her history was shown a little bit and it's not pretty. I understand better her reluctance to get with John Matthew given the horrible way her last relationship worked out. I am glad she is a very strong person because she is going to need that strength to make it through the next part of her life.
I can't wait for Lover Mine to come out in a year. I would recommend Lover Avenged even for those who were disappointed with the last two books - the romance is there in this one and it is very wonderful. There are other stories going on as well but they compliment the romance rather than overwhelm and detract from it. I laughed and cried as I made my way through this book, it was an amazing read....more
Mercury was one of most animalistic Breeds ever created. He was stronger, had better senses and was one of the best soldiers in the labs until one dayMercury was one of most animalistic Breeds ever created. He was stronger, had better senses and was one of the best soldiers in the labs until one day when he went into "feral displacement" and killed people when he thought he lost his mate. Mercury was put on a drug program that pushed his animal side deep inside him until he barely had extra abilites but he survived. As part of his job as a Breed enforcer for Sactuary, Mercury is assigned to protect Gloria "Ria" Rodriguez while she does some short term work at Sanctuary. He is being watched closely for a return of feral displacement, which is a problem because when the animal inside him senses Ria it begins to wake up.
Ria Rodriguez is supposed to be at Sanctuary reviewing the spending of funds donated by the Leo. She is actually there to figure out who is selling information about the mating heat and prolonged lifetimes that occur between mated pairs. Ria dresses as a dowdy woman, hiding herself from the world because she thinks if she doesn't attract attention she won't be hurt and she can do her job better. Mercury sees right through her disguise to the more flashy, strong woman inside.
The attraction between Mercury and Ria is instant and powerful but Ria refuses to give into it because she knows Mercury's mate has died so she would always be his second choice. The physical heat between them eventually boils over and they have some insanely hot love scenes. Mercury decides that she is the mate of his heart, no matter that the signs of mating heat are not there despite how much he wishes they were.
Just when Mercury and Ria start to get together, his supposedly dead mate comes back. The consequences of this explode the story, causing Mercury's animal to finally emerge. Mercury is unbelievably sexy once he is finally the powerful Lion Breed he was supposed to be. Secrets that Ria had hidden come alive as well, allowing her to be strong enough to fight for what she wants - and what she wants is Mercury. The girl fight scene at the end was great, I love how Ria took care of the problem herself and didn't hide behind Mercury.
Mercury and Ria's story is now one of my favorite Breed books. The physical heat between them was scorching plus I really felt that they loved each other and belonged together. I enjoyed finding more out about the Leo, Dane and of course Jonas who is really growing on me. Mercury's War is too good to miss, I highly recommend reading this story and the other Breed books....more
