I wasn't sure what to expect after reading the summary, Awakened sounded interesting enough, but it wasn't something I was dying to read. Until I started reading it.... and then I was dying to know what was going to happen. This book was not at all what I was anticipating.
I really connected with the idea of the novel.... the whole "digital life" I could totally see that happening. Some of the reasons that it does happen in the novel, are eerily realistic and incredible sad. I also really empathized with the characters, with Maddie and Justin especially. I admired them both so much. I truly hope that I get to read more of their story.
And there was a little bit of a love story between Maddie and Justin and it was the frustrating kind of love, where you just want to yell at the characters... so much tension... I mean I did yell at Justin... would you kiss the girl already! But I loved that. I watched these two characters from this different world, work through these obstacles and in the process come to care very deeply for each other. That's my kind of love story.
Katie does a great job keeping your attention throughout the entire novel, I can't wait to read more of her stories.

This story was INSANE! INSANE, people! DID not see any of that coming. Seriously I think that my mouth was open in shock throughout this entire novel. Rachel Vincent brought it all out for this novel. Emotional roller-coaster is an understatement.
I don’t want to get into the book too much because everything I want to say is a spoiler and this is not a book that you want ruined for you. Just know that you will not be disappointed. You will laugh, you will cry, you will cheer, you will fume. I did mention emotional roller-coater right? Because I am not exaggerating.
I’m happy to report that I had ample amounts of Tod in this book and that made me one very blissful camper!
I can’t say that I would have done the same thing in Kaylee’s position. If I knew I was going to die, I definitely wouldn’t have spent it at school, and I would have been much more focused about making the most of my remaining days. If Kaylee wasn’t worried about catching a killer that just wouldn’t be her. She’s such a self sacrificing character she makes me feel like a selfish old hag!
Vincent kept me guessing the entire time. I mean she wasn’t really going to kill Kaylee of was she? I mean she can’t kill KAYLEE! If you’ve read this series this far you’re probably like me and don’t want to see any of them hurt.
I only have one complaint. I want more. NOW!(less)

I just finished a few moments ago and I'm having the hardest time composing myself and writing this review. I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. What a fantastic debut novel. Did I mention that I was blown away... and heart-broken.
This novel is raw, it's honest, it's unbelievable. I've read stories about domestic violence, not many but a few, but I've never had a novel tackle the aftermath, the part of the story that the character has to deal with once they are out of the situation. It's much more heart-wrenching then I ever imagined.
To watch Jace struggle, it was so unfair.
The middle of the story did lag a little for me, but I think the exceptional characterization and writing more than made up for it.
And despite the subject matter... there is still an underlying notion of hope.
One of those books that you won't be able to put down... and one that will have a special place in your heart... as will Jace.
P.S. Did you notice the faces in the cover..... I didn't initially and now it's all I see!(less)

This is a hard review for me to write, there are things about this story that I was enamored with but at the same time there were other aspects of the story that just fell flat for me.
The creativity of the story was amazing... the concept of the Flow, it's inhabitants, those aspects of the story where intriguing. Metcalf had a very distinguished writing style, one that I haven't encountered in any previous young adult novels, it was as creative as the story it was telling.... very different.
I didn't exactly understand what the Flow was... and as a result I found myself confused durning most of the story... confused and not really caring what happened as a result. The characters, were interesting, but they lacked the development that I needed to feel connected to them. Instead of feeling engrossed in the story, I felt cut off. I didn't have that drive to find out what was going to transpire.
Although Luminous didn't completely work for me, I think that it will definitely appeal to other readers.(less)

(Although if I'm perfectly honest the cover really doesn't do it for me.... though it is a prettier irl.) But the thing that I really loved about this novel was the references to ancient mythology, which I was not expecting at all! It was a welcome surprise!
This novel is a must read debut! There's a unique setting, an eclectic cast of characters, and a surprising story that is sure to catch your attention! There are a lot of twists and turns going on, and even though I had a few figured out before hand... got to love that foreshadowing, there were still a lot of "oh my gosh, did that just happen" moments. It was impossible not to flip the pages, hoping that we would figure out the truth behind Ari's past. And I loved every minute of it!
Ari is a kick-butt character, and she kicks-butt too! I would definitely put her up there with the likes of Rose Hathaway (from the Vampire Academy series) this girl can take care of herself, but she's not invincible. My favorite character beside Ari was one of the kids in the New 2, Violet, there was something very captivating about her from the moment she showed up on the page.
The one complaint that I had would be the romance between Ari and Sebastian.... only because they had just met for a few hours and then bam they were making out. Neither Ari nor Sebastian seemed like the type of character that would just wear there heart on their sleeve like that... but perhaps there was some magnetic attraction there that I was oblivious to. That being said, the relationship did work nicely in the story, I mean I'm all for making out, though it would have worked without the insta-romance as well.
Overal, Darkness Becomes Her is an action packed, unique twist on ancient mythology, with a kick-butt heroine and one of a kind world!(less)

I love the brilliance of Kiersten White (she is BRILLIANT, people!!) and her witty one liners and hilarious antics.... Kiersten truly breathes life into Evie. If you enjoyed Evie's personality in Paranormalcy, have no fear, our girl is back and even better in Supernaturally. With the characters that we loved from book one: Lend, Raquel, Reth Arianna and a new addition: Jack.
We get to see a whole different side of Evie in Supernaturally. White does an excellent job fleshing Evie's character out, that really made this book exceptional! I was so excited to be back in this world, I didn't realize how much I'd missed it! And it was so easy to get completely absorbed in it... I read this book in a day it was so addicting!
And this is a great paranormal for readers who don't really want that darker aspect that you often get with the genre. These books are light and fun, and just downright funny at times. This series would appeal to a broad spectrum of readers from middle grade all the way to upper young adult!
Trolls... vamps.... selkies... oh my! I can't wait to join Evie on another adventure! (less)
