Jackaby’s assistant. It’s 1892 in New Fiddleham, (New York?), she’s from England, went to college briefly, then went off to a dinosaur dig in the Ukraine.
Jackaby says about himself: “I notice things… things that other people don’t.” (25) Like Sherlock Holmes, Jackaby & Rook consult with the police in crimes they cannot solve. Those crimes often involve non-humans, for Jackaby describes himself to Rook as a Seer, one who is able to see people and beings others cannot.
Rook is describing her own activities here. “It wasn’t that I did not believe in ghosts; it was that I believed in them in the same noncommittal way that I believed in giant squids or lucky coins or Belgium. They were things that probably existed, but I had never had any occasion to really care one way or another.” (82)
Jackaby looks a bit like several Doctors Who, has the personality of several of them, including the ego. This is fun! I look forward to more books in this new series. I requested this book from Interlibrary loan. Read for A- Z challenge....more

Some call it the Cherry Hotel. But most just say it’s Madame Damnable’s Sewing Circle and have done.” (9)
Karen’s an orphan, a prostitute, who calls herself a seamstress. This is a western and it’s steampunk, on two occasions she operates the large sewing machine that the house keeps, which also does cutting and steam pressing, and is powered by water pressure to get out big trouble.
She lives in Rapid City, which is Seattle, of sorts, with airships plying the trade routes, and a villain with a telepathic gauntlet. This is fun!
Oh and Karen’s a lesbian, her girlfriend is Indian from the subcontinent, she fights the villain with U.S. Deputy Marshall Bass Reeves, who is believed to have been the model of the Lone Ranger, a black man and former slave, and who in this novel has as his posse mate Tomoatooah, a Comanche, who likes horses almost as much as Karen does.

Tomas’ entire unit of elite scouts, the Hunt Pack, have been massacred by Emperor Leopold’s forces.
Captain Reiter has been ordered into Aydori to locate and kidnap six powerful mages.
Emperor Leopold is insane and he’s relying on the prophecies of crazy soothsayers, in his kingdom ruled by science, gas lights and fear of the unknown. Aydori has some gas lights, but is ruled by mages and werewolves. I really enjoyed this fun novel and hope there will be a sequel and that it will be out soon.

“Evie’s first week in New York City had proved to be every bit as exciting as she’d hoped. In the afternoons, she and Mabel took the El to the movie palace to watch Douglas Fairbanks, Buster Keaton, and Charlie Chaplin, one particular warm day they’d ridden the Culver Avenue Line out to Coney Island. There, they dipped their toes in the cold surf of the Atlantic and strolled past the penny arcades and carnival- like amusements…”(88) ["br"]>["br"]>...more

(They were the Archduke Ferdinand and Princess Sophie. I wish a bit more time was spent on why they were poisoned, rather than shot.) And he escaped Austro- Hungary in a Stormwalker with his fencing master, tutor and two soldiers. Meanwhile, Deryn, who is masquerading as a boy Dylan, she couldn’t have been Darren?, on her first training flight is rescued by the Leviathan, a flying great whale airship, among many other animals. Alek comes to help Deryn in neutral Switzerland, but no good deed goes unpunished. Britain and its allies are Darwinists and they have made animals evolve into other purposes. The Austro- Hungarian Empire has Clankers, steam- driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition, such as the enormous Stormwalker.
I quite enjoyed this thrill-a-minute adventure ride in the early days of a different World War I, as seen through two young teens' eyes. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel, which because I have put off reading this book so long, is now available. I liked the illustrations, it added to the pleasure, to show as well as describe the foreign concepts, as well as making it seem like a much older book....more
