You'd normally need an epic to tell a story like this. The fact that the author has managed to do it in 40,000 words is testament to his skill as a writer.
I haven't always enjoyed this author's previous work but lately, I've had an excellent run so I'm chuffed. I always knew that if I didn't give up, I'd hit on something I'd like so that's why I tend to keep buying books by authors who seem to give me only 3-star reads. I'm really, really glad I didn't give up on this one and look forward now to his other works, at least the non-paranormals.
If you're a fan already, you'll find Vagabond Heart is everything the 5-star reviewers say it is....more
AIL is a hard book for me to rate as it was 5 stars in some parts then would sink to a 3 for quite a bit. In the end, I settled for 3 because even thoAIL is a hard book for me to rate as it was 5 stars in some parts then would sink to a 3 for quite a bit. In the end, I settled for 3 because even though I enjoyed the good parts, and the story as a whole, the authors dragged it out far too long than was necessary. I ended up skimming through several pages in the second half as it became so repetitive. Much of the time, I felt like I was watching a rather boring tennis match.
What I did like, though, was the friends-to-lovers transition. I found myself enjoying this journey very much. I liked that these two men, so very different on the surface, are actually very similar - Calvin is a player, not sleeping with the same guy above a couple of times, if even that; the typical footloose, fancy-free hot-looking guy in his mid 20s, and has never wanted to change this. Tom, on the other hand, needs to jump through several mental hoops before he'll even go out with anyone and anything physical would have him breaking out in a sweat, so convinced is he of his lack of appeal.
This difference is only, as I mentioned, superficial. I could easily see that both men are very similar in that both are stuck in the groove of their own making because they just never knew any different. It was a good ride following them as they discover that scary, new world out there as each steps out of his comfort zone and get their sweet HEA with each other.
It was a lovely, sweet story that I felt was spoiled by the 50-odd unnecessary pages. It comes up to 287 pages on my Sony (wish all publishers gave Wordcount) and is categorized as a Novel Plus on Loose Id. If you don't mind the repetitiveness of their dialogue or the sex scenes, I'm sure you'd give this a 4 or 5 stars. I certainly would have....more
