I borrowed it from the library, and when my loan was up, I hadn't quite finished it & then I forgot all about it until I requested it from the library again - this time as an ebook.
I reread it from the beginning again, and realized I had listened to about 75% of it the first time around.
The book is about a Post Apocalyptic world, where every part of an individual's life is ordered, right down to the food you eat. Personally, it's a nightmare / horror world, because to take away all of our choices, from the clothes you wear, to what you own, to your job to your "match", is what gives our lives meaning. Society has also gotten rid of everything that makes our world special - there's only 100 movies, 100 books, 100 paintings, 100 poems, and so on. Like I said - it's a nightmare world.
So, my thoughts on the book? LOVED the audiobook version which was very well done, and it always reminds me of just how much I enjoy listening to books. Cassia starts off the book very positive about the world she lives in, and by the end of the book, she's grown up a lot, has learned about harsh reality, and is ready to find her true love, despite horrible danger. All in all, however, I didn't really care for Cassia & really didn't get involved with her as a character & I just couldn't get into the whole falling in love storyline which just seemed sudden.
I think my favorite characters in the book were Cassia's grandfather & little brother, at best minor characters in the book. ...more

I am definitely a history geek, & enjoy reading about WWII & the Holocaust, but like other reviews on this book have stated, I didn't really know much about the specifics, other than a general knowledge that lots of bad things happened. It was nice to learn a few new facts, & this is an area of study I'd like to revisit in the future....more

This book has been on my to read pile forever, so I grabbed a copy from the library & I think I read the book in one night, immediately requested the next book & read that immediately as well. To say I was enjoying the book would be an understatement.
The book's been reviewed a hundred times, so I'm not really going to say much other than the fact that this was definitely my favorite read for 2012, & this was the book that got me back into reading, after not touching a book for most of the past few months.
After reading the book, I then listened to the audio version - which was EXCELLENT & I highly recommend.
reread dec, 2015 - new review So this is at least the forth time I've read this book.
I first read it in 2012 (review here), then listened to the audiobook (which I strongly recommend) and I'm pretty sure I read it at least one more time after that. I so got hooked on this series, and I finally convinced my husband to read it as well. He finally started the last book, so it was time for me to re-read the entire series so we can obsessively talk about it!
So being a big fan I am not really going to right much of a review, but I am going to mention the fact that even though all of the characters (except Katniss really) are very one-dimensional (perfect Peeta, drunk Haymitch, silly Effie, etc), they aren't really. Yes, Peeta's perfect, but he's just such a nice guy you have to love him anyway. Yes, Haymitch is a drunk, but he's just so committed to helping Katniss live that you can't help but respect him for that, and he tries so hard to be better, to save her. Effie may be silly, but she ends up falling in love with Katniss and Peeta and tries to help them survive in her own way, too. How can you not love the characters?

I decided since I really liked the series, that I'd re-read all of them. I started re-reading the first one & was a little bored with it, so I decided to jump ahead & re-read this one.
I originally gave this book five stars, so I know I greatly enjoyed it, but I wasn't writing reviews (regularly, anyway) back in 2009, when I last read the series. Now, I'm only giving it four stars. Honestly, the characters are great, but the plot just seemed a little thin for a roughly 600 page book. Lots of stuff happens, but the main plot was "let's go rescue Nicko & Snorri" (and I'm finding that I don't really care for Snorri, at least in this book; she's got zero personality).
The series reminds me alot of Harry Potter & I do think fans of Harry Potter will enjoy this one, too, but it lacks the originality of HP's world & is definitely written for a younger audience then the HP books (at least the latter ones). The villians aren't very evil, nothing truly bad ever really happens in Septimus' world....more
