The writing is so gorgeous I almost wouldn't care if it had a plot—but the plot is also amazing. It is full of simple, rich, concrete imagery that is opened up, built into an amazing fractal tree of meaning and sensation, then folded back into a new subtle package. I simultaneously wanted to rush through it to let it all flow over me, and read it slowly to savor all the beautiful words.
I was already planning to read this book because I adore everything else I've read by the author, but what inspired me to read it immediately was a reviewer summarizing the concept as "a sexually-transmitted city." Only Valente could have produced such a book from that concept.
