I want to purchase my own copy to reread and the series is going to be high on my wishlist.
This is a romance, a story that feels like a Jane Austen Novel but with added magic. A magic of illusion, glamour. This magic is something pretty trivial, it creates an illusion of movement in pictures, a picturescape to accompany music, allows a dress designer to show a customer what the dress would look like when complete in miniature, serves as an alarm for a hunter. Small things. It's considered a skill all accomplished women should have, and uses fabric-like language to describe it.
Jane is an accomplished weaver of glamour, she has resigned herself to spinsterhood as she's twenty-eight and plain. Her sister has more prospect of marriage than she does and she is content with that. However she finds herself caught up in a situation that requires her to push herself to her limits and along the way finds that maybe, just maybe, she might be able to find love.
This drew me in and kept me reading. I sincerely didn't want to leave it until I finished it and look forward to some day re-reading it. The characters came across as if they had stepped out of a period fiction of the regency and had comfortably settled into this one. It just didn't misstep for me at any stage and this one will go on my favourites shelf on book sites....more

Seph McCauley has spent the last few years being kicked out of boarding schools due to unusual things happening around him, now he's being sent to a secluded school, The Havens, which promises to reform him.
Little do they know that this school is a matter of life and death for him.
I liked the story, when the older characters came back in it made things believable but the battle was over very quickly and there was unresolved stuff left, so book 3, I'm looking forward to it. ...more

This case has them investigating together the hows and whys of some murders around one of the psionic councilors, murders that could swing psions against humans and changelings. And they have to deal with their feelings for each other, can Sophia survive?
I liked it, the characters were fun and the mystery kept giving....more

And then Opal Koboi breaks free with a cunning plan to destroy faerie lands and to gain a lot of power, Artemis will have to be reminded, and faerie is never going to be the same.
I found it interesting but it did lag a bit in places, Artemis is becomming more of a rounded person in this story and there's a bit of introspection going on which is all good. I'm looking forward to the next installment....more

Will is a boy who survived his family dying in a fire. The local abbey took him in as an odd-job man and he has befriended at least one of the monks. The old abbot is dying and there is a feeling of change about to come over the monastery. The story opens with Will rescuing a Hob from a trap and this is a catalyst for a big change in his life, a change that will mean that nothing will ever be the same again for him. I really liked this story, Will is a great character and I really felt for him, you wonder as you read if he's going to survive and how he's going to survive. Brother Snail is also a great character and you can see the authors knowledge creep in. She's an archaeologist and you can see some of the detail about medieval monasteries from archaeology and from notes in manuscripts (some of the details about some of the readers at meals I recall from my own studies) to give it a good backbone, but the story she constructs around that backbone is quite good and interesting and I would recommend it to both adults and young adult readers. It won't take me as long to get around to reading the next one as the first!...more

What she doesn't realise is that there are powers at work, powers that could help or hinder her choices.
Branwen is caught between a lot of different worlds and her choices aren't easy, nor are they depicted as easy. In several instances they're depicted as being pretty uniformly bad, for a change in some YA novels (recent experiences may have coloured this comment) she chooses the hard rather than the soft route and while there was some romantic moments the romance was very secondary to her development as a person (double yay). The covers don't do this series any justice, she should really have a weapon in one of those hands! I'm looking forward to more in this series, while there were moments that didn't quite work, most of it was very well done....more

StutGerald Dunwoody didn't ask to be in the job he's in, it was the best he could do, he's a government inspector of magical manufacturing companies. Stuttley's Superior Staff factory hasn't returned safety inspection paperwork in months and he's sent in to ensure that things are ok. It should be routine.
And then everything blows up, quite literally, he tries to rescue things but it all looks like his fault and he's out of a job. Little does he know that the explosion has changed his life forever, and it's possible that the assumption that he was a third grade wizard may be a little mistaken.
His friend Monk finds out about a posting in a far-off kingdom, Court Wizard for King Lional. However there are things that don't quite add up and his life is in serious danger.
It's a wry book with a self-mocking tone, I liked the characters and found it a good enough read that when I came across book 2 in a bookshop shortly after reading it I snapped it up.
Gerald is an interesting character, suddenly faced with the fact that he has more power he thinks about the ethics of using it. He is a man caught by his power and the knowledge that if he doesn't use it he will condemn others. It's written with a mostly light touch (you can't do a torture scene lightly) and with a slightly self-effacing apologetic main character that I completely empathised with....more

I did quite enjoy the story and some of the characters were seriously interesting.
The story opens with a barbarian hoarde invading the Denova Set, a peaceful set of kingdoms with the Valisar Monarchs at the core. The Vasilar Monarchs have a legendary power that the barbarian covets, the power of compulsion. King Brennus is the current Vasilar monarch and he knows he's going to die, all he can do, on the day of his latest child's birth is to try to make sure that some of his family survive. The pain and terrible decisions he has to make are quite clear. He keeps trying to do the right thing, up to the end. As the Barbarian Loethar takes control and cannibalises Brennus in front of his wife, you can see where people make terrible decisions, often to try to do the right thing.
It's an interesting read, I did have some moments in the middle where I was almost lost but I'm looking forward to the sequel....more

Saren has refused to marry Lord Khasar and her father imprisons her in a tower with enough food to last seven years to see if she would change her mind.
Dashi is a Mucker, or nomad, who has healing songs and an ability to cope. Saren has a break down when she realises that there is no way out.
This is told from the point of view of Dashi, it's a world a lot unlike the regular fantasy world and it's a good thing for that, Dashi is an interesting character and when Saren makes her pretend to be her she does question the morality of the act and does think it through on the page. She is a loyal servant who eventually gets a reward and the relationships in the story are well told and believable.
I look forward to reading more by Shannon Hale....more

I really like it, yes it's a bridging novel and it does depend on having read the previous novel but it was really interesting and kept me reading. I really felt like Devlin was dealing with serious situations and issues that really were giving him issues. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series....more
