The story was short (80 pages?), but so tightly packed with a lot of great, yummy and sexy romance. I loved it, can't wait to see where this serial goes.
JUST ONE NIGHT is part 1 of a new erotic m/f adult romance serial by new-to-me author Elle Casey. This is not an NA/YA romance (a genre this author is known for), as the H/h are in their mid/late 30's. It is super HOT and charged with a lot of sexual tension and burning chemistry!
In this episode, William and Jennifer meet and proceed to burn up the sheets under the agreement of a one-night only affair. It had a Cinderella twist as these two attend a high-dollar charity ball, which I loved. What they didn't expect was connecting so well on an emotional level, and setting their hearts on fire wanting MORE.
In case you are wondering, it does NOT have BDSM, menage, anal or other more extreme erotic kinkiness (at least, not in this book!) It was just good old-fashion dirty smut. ;-)
William is my kind of hero! He is a super HOT, sexy, funny British guy who I adored! His wit was pure British, and his prowess is my kind of hot and sexy!! Best yet, he doesn't suffer from 'Asshole syndrome', which is becoming far too common in today's romance books. He is simply a great guy who goes after what he wants, he doesn't have a load of personal baggage, and he really, REALLY knows how to treat a lady right.
Jennifer was just as wonderful. She is a smart and down-to-earth heroine who is finding a new sexuality about her self. She is no doormat heroine either! Yeah!! (Another trope which is becoming far too common!)
These two meet under the oddest of circumstances. While personal ads in romance books have been done to death, I really enjoyed the spin we get on this one. William answers her ad, which Jennifer was very reluctant to post, only because his secretary prodded him to do so. Their first conversation was a crack up, and really set the tone and chemistry for these two.
This is a serial, so don't expect the HEA just yet. But I have no doubt that these two will get an awesome HEA when the time comes. It ends in a really good place, and will leave you both satisfied and wanting more.
The writing: One thing I really enjoyed most about this book was the authors writing voice, especially since she does a lot of 'show me' and allows her characters to tell the story. (LOVE THAT!) The dialogue between William and Jennifer felt real, and I never questioned the genuineness of their attraction. It was told in 3rd person, and we get alternating POVs from both William and Jennifer.
***Before you discount this serial, know this: I too am not fan of serial episode books because you have to buy each book by the episode. But I am so glad I did with this one, and I should warn you that you might miss out if you skip over this serial. If there ever was an exception this might just be that series. Was the 80 pages for this 'chapter' worth the .99 cents I spent? Yes, absolutely.***
According to the author's blog, new books will come out every two to three weeks.
A big thanks to my friend J for the recommendation! I wouldn't have found this series otherwise....more
Cute story! Fans of romantic movies will really enjoy this one. I thought this was more 'chick lit' than romance, but it is 3* 'Tummy Flip Test' Stars
Cute story! Fans of romantic movies will really enjoy this one. I thought this was more 'chick lit' than romance, but it is still a fun romantic story with some over the top silly moments you might remember from some of your favorite movies.
The Story Kensington Shaw is about to marry Bradley, the only problem is he doesn't pass the TFT: 'Tummy Flip Test'. But he is successful, everyone loves him, and he is ready to start that family she wants so much. Her hard-to-please mom even likes him, and her overly competitive sister-in-law Ren actually approves. He is perfect, right?
Then one day Shane, a British hunk and 'the one who got away' seven years ago, shows up at her office and turns everything upside down. You see, Shane still passes the 'Tummy Flip Test', BIG TIME. And he has never forgotten Kensie. Now he is determined to prove he is the right man for her, and uses their shared love for romance movies as leverage.
“So what should I be waiting for exactly?” Swallowing hard, I wait. I can’t believe I asked that. Shane takes a step forward and turns, stopping me with his hands. Warm copper eyes level to mine with intensity. “Me. You should be waiting for me.”
My Thoughts LOVE LIKE THE MOVIES was a fun and witty romantic story that leverages a lot of great scenes from popular romance movies. I felt a bit lost as I haven't watched all of the movies referenced (or I have long forgotten most of the movie!), but I still really enjoyed the premise. (And now want to watch many of theses movies!)
It is told through Kensignton's POV, so in addition to the romance storyline we also watch her journey as she deals with her many (many!) family problems, with her work issues and possibly losing her job, with her questionable friends who may not have her back, and with Bradley's jealousy and his less-than-noble character.
The best parts (of course!) are the scenes with Shane and their heated moments as they re-enact different scenes from their favorite romantic comedies. Oh, they get a bit corny, but in a cute and sweet kind of way. You will be cheering for Shane by the end.
Unfortunately, Shane is a quiet and under-developed character, mostly because he really didn't get a lot of dialogue. He gets surprisingly few speaking parts for being the main 'hero' of the story, but we do get the benefit of Kensignton reminiscing about their previous relationship which helps us get to t know him better. Still, we never get a solid idea of what he is thinking, but what we do see is sweet, romantic, and convincing.
Final Notes The sensuality / steam factor was pretty low. It's a bit more than kissing, but not by much. If you are looking for a hot and steamy contemporary, this isn't it. But if you are in the mood for a cute, sweet romance with some light humor and a bit of corny romance movie memorabilia, you will enjoy this one.
Lastly, I should mention that Kensington does NOT cheat on Bradley, and this isn't a love triangle. Both of which I was very thankful for! ...more
