It had some fantastic world building, great writing, and some very interesting characters, but don't expect a steamy romance. At least not yet. This story read more like a prequel, so I hope there is more to come!
Something is not right in the small town Nathan calls home. A former minister who believes God is to blame for his woes, he is still mourning the tragic and sudden loss of his dead wife and unborn child a few years ago. But today he is experiencing strange phenomenons and occurrences wherever he goes. Swarms of crows are showing up everywhere, plus other odd occurrences and strange behavior among the town folks.
Trying to make sense of what is happening to the town, he finds himself at the center of it all. Unbeknown to him, he was born a nephilim -- a son of a fallen angel.
In the midst of the chaos raining on the small town are two opposite women pulling for his attention. There is Rachel, a sweet innocent single lady who bakes and would make the perfect wife for Nathan. And then there is Eva, a mysterious beauty who rides a motorcycle, dresses in black leather, and makes Nathan desire her like he's never desired another woman.
As I said earlier, this particular story is not a romance. It's more of a prequel, so I sure hope there is more to come. I tried to find more info on the authors web site, but I couldn't find anything. This may be a stand-alone book, who knows.
If the series continues, and I hope it does, there is a strong potential of this UF thriller/mystery turning into steamy romance. Nathan and Eva are meant to be together, they are soul mates from the same dark world so their story could still be told. I do hope the author writes more of this series as she created a fascinating urban fantasy dark world that I'd love to explore further.

However, if you have read the author's dystopian series The Cash Chroniciles set in 2141, or just want to read a character driven story where the story and HEA are turned upside down from a traditional romance novel, this one may really hit the spot.
In this short story we meet the ruthless and heartless heroine Millicent and her soon-to-be philandering milksop of a husband William. They are both forced into an arranged marriage, one William wanted in name only. However, Milicent insists on a real marriage, and knows no boundaries to keep her from having William as her own.
Despite the potential of a good love story, this is actually the back story of characters that star in the authors Cash Chroniciles series. I can't imagine Milicent and William lived out a great HEA, but we will have to read the series to truly find out. It appears Milicent is a wicked character in that series, which has me intrigued to give it a try.
So while this one failed as a romance, the writing and characters peeked my interest in reading the dystopian romance series. But for this book, I'd give it 2 stars as a straight historical romance....more

3.5 stars. A campy, nutty, off-the-wall blood-lite vampire romance not recommended for the serious PNR lovers or those with delicate sensibilities.
I almost DNFd this one a half dozen times, but something about Ephraim and the weirdness of the story kept me reading. It was full of absurd plotting, a motley crew of nutty characters, all mixed with some off-the-wall world building. WTFery on nearly every page. At times it was so disturbingly weird (and not always in a funny ha-ha kind of way), but I found myself fascinated all the same so I couldn't stop reading it. Parts of it were hilarious, and other parts were hot, but the vast majority of it was just off-the-wall. I shake my head asking myself "what the F did I just read?!" It was soooooo over-the-top.
And no, I don't know if I will read more of this series. For now, this book was quite enough. Glad I read it, but it will be a long while before I will be in the mood for more. It was like riding a roller coaster with no seat belt, and trying with all my might to stay in my seat. ...more

This was a fast paced and angsty adventure romance with a good dose of steam, but also a bit over the top in the 'drama' department. I would have enjoyed it much more if I didn't find myself so frustrated with several of the characters through much of the book.
Nickolas was leery about Morgan, and I understood his hesitation with her, but as their 'relationship' progressed I felt he hung onto his distrust too long. We just didn't see a likable side of Nickolas enough for my tastes.
The mother was just a complaining and manipulative wind bag most of the time, although she did have her sons best interest in mind and often was the smartest one in the room. Go figure. I wish we could have seen a more likable side to her too.
Morgan ended up being a very enjoyable heroine, and WOW did she have some hard luck. She deserved an HEA like crazy. I did think they made a good couple in the end, and despite all of their fighting I did believe they could really have an HEA. I may continue with the series. We met his sexy brothers, and several of them really peeked my interests. ...more
