I do like the basic story, but the characters drove me nuts! The sub plots, was just unbelievable, but at the same time believable. Haws, took fiction, and non-fiction and woven this story. It was heart breaking. I really didn't see anything that was "funny."
(view spoiler)[I'll say this, it was clean. Haws, didn't take the time to describe in detail the sexual assault, or the intimacy, so it was clean. Poor Elliot, and Ninna are trying to just survive their fist year of marriage. They had everything going against them, everything from family, work, lack of communication skills, wrong expectations from each other, old flames, and respect from everybody. In short it was a disaster. He swallows some humble pie. Read his old mission journals, and remembered why he "chased" after her after his mission. It was love at first sight for him. As for Pam the "girl that waited" for two long years he just didn't feel anything for her. They do go their separate ways, but in the end they try one more time. (hide spoiler)]
This book is set in the very late sixties to the seventies. Women were paving the way to be doctors, lawyers, CEO's, and etc. During then sexual harassment was an everyday thing, from everybody. Sexual assault....well sorry ladies, but in the sixties, seventies their was a real chance that you didn't get justice, and it was your fault. Disgusting, I know, but feel blessed that you live in today's world. Today, you have a real chance that you will get justice....but then again, people are glorifying the rape culture more and more. As in we are going backwards in time. Disgusting
Elliot's character disappointed me, Ninna also. She wasn't with out blame in this story. I hated Elliot's family, they were nasty bullies, his dad excluded. He tried his best to support his son, his wife (Elliot's mom) just wore the "iron pants" in that family. Her family also gave them a hard time, but for some reason I thought that her family wasn't as bad, and her dad did come around, but her mother did kind of a flip flop also. (view spoiler)[ I still can't believe that his mom had the gull, ( along with the rest of his family), to barge in on them while alone together, being together and she knew it but still stayed anyway! That was tacky of her. I hated her character the most. (hide spoiler)]
I'm glad that I am done with this "coming of age" book. It was long, and in some parts it was very hard for me to read. I don't know, maybe because I've never been married, so yeah I do have that same "fantasy" as every other mormon girl....We'll always work as a team!" The reality is that two different people who had very different growing up experiences, and life experiences, adjusting together will be messy. This book made it seam down right horrible, ugly as sin horrifying!

Austin receive a photo from his brother. The peculiar thing about this photo is that the scenery changes, and a creepy figure is seen crawling out of a grave, across the lawn into a window. To take the baby. Austen, sets out to try and stop her. He finds out she is incredibly powerful, even with the combine power of other students, she just taunts him.

Read the book and you'll know what character I'm talking about.
One review said that this book was intense....really? I didn't think so. I just thought this book was a fun ride. I did think that the descriptions of the plant like things were imaginative....strange. A group of people who are 4th borns get some kind of magical ability to control the elements based on their hair color, but can also control other elements if powerful/ strong enough.
I like how she build on her characters through out the stories. Character development is usually at the binging of the story and can take along time and be very boring. With this story, character development was throughout the story. Getting to know the characters was like getting to know a real person, it took over time and new things keep popping up, not a bad thing. The story was fast paced.
Nicole, the heroine is learning about herself and the world around her. Coming of age story...sure. She's in a world that she knows almost nothing about, she can't even control her own powers, her own element. When the need arises she skips her own element goes to another and almost kills herself. Ignorance is bliss? Not on this case, although she liked it that she can't feel pain any longer, but sacred her all the same. ...more

The weir thing is that the pic of the guy on the front kind of looks like someone I know. Maybe that was why I couldn't get into the story. I just couldn't get separate the pic. of the hero on the cover with the guy that I know. It was weird for me.
I found myself skipping a head a lot. Still got the just of the story, and plot. And yay, she forgives him, at the end of the book. I don't think he was doing his job very well, but I guess he could have said that he was distracted by the heroine/love interest to do his job well. Course everything works out in the end, even her father doesn't die, he just wakes up. ...more

He was rude and arrogant, he started to change his behavior for the better, because of the love he had for the woman.
Looking for a Darcy copy cat is insane. This Elizabeth, wanted her "Darcy" so much she started to justify his behavior. She stayed with Matt (aka Darcy) because she was in love with an idea, not the person. That just made the book long and infuriating.
Chad was the redeemable character who made me want to read the sorry. He was interesting and token for granted. I really didn't understand the last bit where Meg went into the bank to tell Elizabeth off. Why in the world would she do that? You'd think she would be happy that Elizabeth broke things off with Matt.
Sometimes, I don't understand the authors intent when they put in scenes that jus didn't really belong. When that happens it just makes the book long and boring, ...more
