She is the only girl in a family of seven brothers. In fact, she is the only girl at all in the Nasel River Valley of Washington state at the turn of the century. Most people think May should act like a proper young lady, but she's a tom boy through and through. May would rather be climbing trees and helping her brothers than anything else. This doesn't sit well with her father, who always seems to be disappointed in her. That's why May hopes that, now that her mother is going to have another baby, it will be a girl and everyone will leave her alone. An absorbing story about growing up on the frontiers of Washington in 1899, with good examples of the ups and downs of family and a girl trying to find her place in that family. The only thing I didn't like about this book was the writing style, where the narrator told what the dialogue was, rather than having the characters "speak". Sometimes it was hard to tell dialogue from the narrator's inner thoughts.(less)

Mibs Beaumont is from a unique family. Each member has a special gift, a savvy, that shows itself on their thirteenth birthday. Some of these savvies are quirky and harmless, like Mibs momma (her savvy is perfection), while others can be dangerous to the person and everyone around them. Mibs brothers have each had wild and dangerous savvies- one makes electricity and the other creates hurricanes. Mibs's thirteenth birthday is fast approaching and she wonders what is in store for her. But her savvy takes a backseat when her poppa is seriously injured in an accident. Her mother and brother must be with Poppa in the hospital and the rest of the family is supposed to be looked after by the minister's wife. But when Mibs wakes up on her birthday and her brother's turtle that everyone thought was dead wakes up, she believes that she will be able to wake her father from his coma. She hopes her savvy will make her father well, but first she must get to the hospital, far away in Salina, in order to help him. So Mibs stows away on a pink, bible carrying bus that is supposed to be from Salina. She isn't alone, however, when her brother, Fish, tries to stop her, he, the minister's daughter, Bobbi, and Will, the boy that Mibs might possibly like all get sucked into her adventure. But there are a couple of problems. Mibs's savvy is definitely not what she originally thought, and the bus is going in the opposite direction from where she really wants to be. (less)

I didn't like think that I would like this book, but I did enjoy it. The stories within the story really pulled me in and made me want to continue. It will be a hard sell to most kids though. I could see doing it as a read-aloud.(less)
