The writing style takes a while to get used to - I think there are passages where I only understood half of the words. But she is so funny!
I like how the story is built and built and 2/3 of the way through the book, the reveals that the characters have fallen in love with each other.(less)

The characters really drew me in. Looking back, it seems like there were a lot of people to keep straight, but the author subtly reminds you of who works for whom etc. And I learned historical facts from this book!
I recently lived in India where most lighter-skinned people have darker-skinned maids/nannies. Including me. Coming from a culture that is not used to that sort of Help, I had a hard time adjusting to it. It was interesting to read this book with that perspective.(less)

Anyway. I liked the format of the back-and-forth short chapters between characters. This can be choppy, but the author made it work. The book kept me guessing. One of my favorite characters was Julia's father-in-law.(less)
