I was beginning to think the first one I read was a fluke. Sylvester wasn't as laugh-out-loud as some of her other novels, but I was really rooting for the characters, and enjoyed the sentimentality more.(less)

It has a different setting - France - than the others I've read. The clothing, activities and customs was different than what I'm used to. I had a hard time getting into it.
I also found the romantic love between the two main characters a bit far-fetched.(less)

The writing style takes a while to get used to - I think there are passages where I only understood half of the words. But she is so funny!
I like how the story is built and built and 2/3 of the way through the book, the reveals that the characters have fallen in love with each other.(less)

I get tired of all the misunderstandings and characters refusing to admit that they are in love, but apparently that's what makes reading interesting.(less)

The end of The Book of Mormon covers the annihilation of two civilizations. The last two authors, Mormon and Moroni, upon witnessing the destruction of their people, write of hope, charity, faith, good things coming from God, miracles, eternal life, and being perfecting in Christ.
Moroni 10:32 Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be eperfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.(less)

I didn't feel like the underlying plot was very cohesive, even at the end. However, I enjoyed the stories enough that it didn't matter.

I was really impressed with the author's ability to make Lucius sooooo arrogant and annoying at the beginning, but genuinely likable at the end. When I started reading I thought, "there's no way I'll like this guy." But somehow his arrogance becomes endearing. I'm not the only reviewer to mention this, so it must just be the character development.(less)

Then Mornay realized his love for Ariana and everything went downhill. I enjoyed their spitfire conversations, but he turned into a doting puppy dog. And then it got excessively Christian and I got tired of reading it. Oh well.(less)

I enjoyed this book, but one thing bothered me. (view spoiler)[Even though she felt it was her calling from God, and important above all else, Anne gave up her healing activities, to the point of destroying her garden. She did this to protect Niall, and to show her love for him. BUT she wouldn't give up her friendship with Ian. I'm sure the author did this to show how Anne was right all along about Ian, but I think it was disloyal to Niall. (hide spoiler)](less)

Maybe because I don't fall for hype, but I think part of it was because I thought the premise was dumb. Here's a book... about writing a book. Eh.
The characters really drew me in. Looking back, it seems like there were a lot of people to keep straight, but the author subtly reminds you of who works for whom etc. And I learned historical facts from this book!
I recently lived in India where most lighter-skinned people have darker-skinned maids/nannies. Including me. Coming from a culture that is not used to that sort of Help, I had a hard time adjusting to it. It was interesting to read this book with that perspective.(less)

At first I thought I would be too sensitive for it. I'm sensitive anyway, plus I'm pregnant... but as it turns out, the book didn't even make me cry. Weird.
Anyway. I liked the format of the back-and-forth short chapters between characters. This can be choppy, but the author made it work. The book kept me guessing. One of my favorite characters was Julia's father-in-law.(less)
