Not so "light" or shallow however- as to allow the reader to forget all the many stages that we witness and pass through in a life time. It offers differing story lines that illustrate that we all struggle and enjoy stages of life that others around us have or could have in their own journey. I found it to be a delightful, cozy and smooth read. Leading the reader to contemplate current, past or future life phases and connections that come our way. I did not feel that the story line was predictable- which is good. I came to think that perhaps I could be missing out on the joys and comforts of spending more time in the kitchen. Maybe I will find that stage in life again where I enjoy preparing foods. If not, I do enjoy the efforts of those that do it for me. ...more

But I enjoyed learning of the time / events and that one could understand the dire setting without vulgar or crude language - In fact God was central to the message. This is a WWII story where a musician finds herself in Auschwitz, so it is a grim setting in parts, but it also tells of a current day search for clues to her story.

It did pull me emotionally – Great writing by the author - he created an interesting sort of on /off building of suspense. It was a gripping story -yet draining- due to the time period and serious issues set in a dangerous and frightening time period. It is illustrious as to how dangerous and evil leaders care nothing for the lives they control. (I could go off on one of my political rants but I will hold back) The heartache for every person in the story and all those around them was not in short supply. I felt a good sense of the settings & history. I felt relief when I was finished There were certain sad, tragic and terrible WW2 events that seemly had to be thrown in to the story so as to not miss any of the heartbreaking elements of such a event/ time period. For instance the Russians coming and finding the girls- I have no doubt this happened but….. . I have read many in the same setting w/ less crude and vulgar writing. It is tame to be sure when measured with many other books. I guess some of the issues I have are from my preference to biographies and memoirs over historical fiction. ...more

Learning more eye opening detail to these events brought great emotion and deep sadness that so many lives have been ruined to cover up what others want to hide. This corruption is timeless & is something that we need to keep in mind and watch for. I am glad to have learned from this book what I did, so this will sound harsh. BUT I NEVER enjoy narrative history books. It frustrates me to read these embellished accounts, I know history is subjective and limited what we hear/ read/ can find... I appreciate Glenn's efforts and reason for writing in this style. It speaks to many people so this book will be good for that crowd. Glenn has become a great historian and well studied. He seems to have gone to great lengths to keep to what is known, the context of the story and so forth. He spends much time at the close of the book to say (chapter by chapter) "Dialogue and character thoughts were imagined based on..... ", "....dialogue is imagined to proved historical context..... ", "There is no record of what he actually said to Jefferson , ... the imagined dialogue is supported..." I think my historical accounts are best enjoyed by another format. ...more
