It’s about a boy who blames himself for the death of his best friend after a basketball game. From the very beginning it had me hooked. The book had me in tears within the first couple of pages. This continued through out the book, like an emotional roller coaster. I Loved the plot of the story because it was realistic and their was no story book ending. The author did an amazing job of writting the story and planning out the plot, the plot was amazing. The book is also one of my favorites because it was very realatable. It also was an easy book to relate to because it deals with the normal things of a teenager living in violent Philadelphia. Many teen s deal with death in the " City Of brotherly Love".
Within the first couple of pages a great victory occurs, however it is followed by a horrible tragedy. A high school basketball team wins a game, great victory. The star players are excited and wanted to go out and celebrate. They end up drinking and driving. They get into a car accident and three of the boys escape the car before it catches fire. However one friend is stuck in the car and the boys stand there helplessly as they watch and hear their friend burning to death. I was in tears, and it had me hooked. I couldn’t put the book down because I just had to finish reading and find out what would happen. The author grabbed my attention in the very beginning and never let it loose throughout the book.
I love the way the author tells the story. She doesn’t just tell the story through narration. She tells it through phone conversations, letters, and newspaper articles. She even includes the high school newspaper and the student’s personal essays they had to do for homework. Each element tells the story, and each has a different point of view. This really added to the book because you just weren’t told a story you were shown the story through every way possible. This book it also part of a series of books that tell the same story but through different people.
Finally, I loved the book because it was easy to relate to. As a teenager who has lost both of her parents to natural causes. I am really well with death so all the death that occured in this book really triggered a lot of emotions for me. It was about teenagers dealing with school, relationships, the streets, and just everyday life. It really touched me when their friend was kilt. They all talked about how they thought they would live forever because they were young. Especially Robbie Washington, the won who was killed because he was the star basketball player and had a bright future ahead of him. It really goes with the saying we have today, “da good die young”. Especially today because it seems like every young person knows at least one friend that was kilt at a very young age.
To conclude, this is a very good book and I would recommend it to all teenagers to read. It is a very touching book. You can also actually learn from this book, and it teaches you a good life lesson. The book is very engaging, especially the way the Author writes. I think all young people can relate to this book and learn something.
Of Mice and Men was a book written in the past that can relate to the present, and future. Published in 1937 in the United States of America, Of Mice Of Mice and Men was a book written in the past that can relate to the present, and future. Published in 1937 in the United States of America, Of Mice and Men is a story that could have taken place abroad. John Steinbeck was the creator of this story. In the book I loved the use of the literary tool of foreshadowing. Foreshadowing is used all through-out Of Mice and Men. The time period in which the book takes place is during the 1930's. The 1930's was a significant time in America and using this time period created a certain type of mood to the story. The 1930's time period also allowed for extensive character developement and opened our eyes to many of America's many hidden evils and discrimination. Last, I liked Of Mice and Men because of the overall plot and the many messages the book delivered.
Foreshadowing is used in written art and film to give hints about things to come in later plot developments. It can be very broad and easily understood, or it may be complex use of symbols, that are then connected to later turns in the plot. Steinbeck uses this literary tool a lot in Of Mice and Men. I liked the use of foreshadowing because it allows me to keep up with the story and go back and make connections to things I had previously read in the plot. The story Of Mice and Men also had a very dramatic and suspensful plot at times it was very helpful to have the foreshadowing (hints) to carry you to the end.
I loved the fact that the book was based in the 1930’s. The book greatly depicts events and emotions that were occuring and felt in the 1930's. For ex. The "Dust Bowl" occured in the 1930's.During the year of 1930 most farmers would get quite an amount of rain, and healthy crops. But, once the year changed so did the weather. The mud dried up and turned into dust, and that was the start of The Dust Bowl.I remember during the viewing of Of Mice and Men the last farm that Lennie and George were working on did not look so plentiful it looked very dusty and dry. A lot of racism and discrimination was going on in the 1930's. This book shows this through the African- American character crooks. Using this time period also allows for character developement. It added a character trait and emotion to every character in Of Mice and Men. One part that angered me from the story was when Lennie a retarded person could not remember his own aunts name but could not remember that crooks was suppose to be called a nigger. Even though Lennie was treated bad for his disability he still could find room to degrade someone else in a worse off position then him.
Of Mice of Men had an amazing plot with very good and inspiring characters. The characers could represent many different types of people. The characters helped push fourth the messages Of Mice and Men beared. The story startedoff slow but picked up very quicxkly and once it took off it didn't not even at the end did it slow down.
Of Mice and Men was a great book that I really enjoyed. I liked Of Mice and Men because it was a relatable book whether you read it during its publication in 1937 or today. I'm sure the book will still be relateable in the future because history repeats itself. I liked the literary tool of Forseshadowing. What I liked the most however was the time period in which the book was based because it set the mood of the book and allowed for many situations and character developements. ...more
When you read a book what are you looking to get from it? Do you read for enjoyment, pleasure or is it just a hobbie of yours? Well, for me reading i When you read a book what are you looking to get from it? Do you read for enjoyment, pleasure or is it just a hobbie of yours? Well, for me reading is a way to escape the tradgedies, drama, and stress of reality. Reading is a way to leave my own life and get lost and entagled in the life of someone else's. Reading gives me a sense of accomplishment when I turn the last page of a book, and I love the knowledge and wisdom I gain from reading. Two days ago I finished a book entitled "Around The Way Girls". This book was not a good read at all! "Around The Way Girls" did not satisfy any of my reasons for reading, told to many of the same type stories, and had to many different authors.
Being a teenager in Philadelphia is hard. People are getting killed, attacked, raped, and assaulted every where you turn. In my life some of these things weigh heavily on my mind causing me stress. Going to school is also another factor in my life to cause stress and drama. The typical he say, she say and drama that fills your high school years certainly have filled my own this year and last. I mean you can try to avoid and evade it and some actually can but with my personality and strong outspoken spirit it is difficult for me to do so. Sometimes this drama becomes frustrating and stressful and you just want to escape If only for an hour or two. Sometimes, life can be boring and you need something to spice it up a little bit. Maybe, you just want to learn something and gain wisdom. Well, if not you then me! These are reasons I like to read to sometimes escape reality. This book did not satisfy any of my reasons for reading. In the book "Around The way Girls" I did not learn anything useful or that I didn't already know. The story's were mostly about the same black ghetto females who get caught up with some drug dealing male. I know the morals and lessons that go with the women who take this road in life. In the book their were a lot of short stories which did not allow me to get personal with any character and follow one story. As soon as I started to get into one story a new one started which became really annoying by the end of the book.
In many urban books the same old story is told with different names and a slight twist and turn. The same drama and high pionts always fill the pages of these types of books. In the book "Around The Way Girls" their was a selection of short stories they were different but they were all the same. The first story was about a stripper who was sick of living in the ghetto and of her drug dealing baby daddy. The next story was about another girl who wanted to escape the ghetto. Basically the book was a song on repeat.
Their were to many authors in the book Around The Way Girls. Each author has their own writing style. Everyone of the authors in the book had a different writing style and used different writing techniques and language to tell their short stories. Some authors used a lot of idioms. Others tried to use a lot of "hood talk" ( slang) which sometimes got so annoying and went a little overboard to the point that I couldn't even understand it. Some authors got very descriptive and others barely described anything. The point I'm trying to make is that different authors write using different writing styles and I didn't like that.
In conclusion I did not like the book Around The Way Girls. This book did not satisfy my reasons for reading. The book had to many authors and to many of the same type stories. I did not enjoy this book at all, although it is popular amongst my peers.
ReadingThe book entitled " Around the Way Girls" was not a good read at all. I felt that the two days I spent reading this book was a waste of valuable time. "Around The Way Girls" was not actually a book that portrayed a story but, more of a collection of short stories. ...more
