I read it about ten times last night and didn't even get tired of it. My 7 year old son, who doesn't get humor and joking a lot of times, laughed throughout the entire thing. It was awesome. One of my favorite children's books, ever.(less)
Thank you, thank you, a million times over, thank you, tim! _____________________________________________________________
I think what draws me to David Mitchell's work is not only his amazing talent with character development and dialogue, but also his ability to create a real sense of life in so many of his books. In any setting or situation, every time I finish a Mitchell novel, I feel I come away with almost a sense of...hope. Lame, I know. But it's true.
Honestly, I wasn't sure what I expected from this one. I'd heard it was different than his previous novels, and instead of genre-jumping, focused more on a historical fiction theme. Not only was this one of the best historical novels I've read, I was surprised at how many themes were included in the story. When I read the blurb on the back, I have to admit I was skeptical at first, and worried if it would even hold my interest. I was wrong. Love, death, war, family and faith; Mitchell packed it all in.
I have to thank Mike Reynolds, who originally sent this advanced reader's copy to tim, who then graciously and hurriedly sent it to me (UPS even!). Thank you again, tim! (less)

It really was one of the funniest books I have ever read. I pretty much tore through this since it was impossible to put down. The narrator in this book has one of the craziest adventures I've ever read, and I couldn't stop laughing throughout the entire thing. At the same time, I was surprised to find how oddly touching the story turned out to be.
I mean really, how awesome is it to find references to skullets, mud-butt, and Chuck Liddell all in one book? Now that's perfection if you ask me.(less)
