"Invisible Monsters" is my favourite Chuck Palahniuk book, so when I saw that he had not only re-released it in hard cover, but also remixed it, I was THRILLED!!
Chuck is seriously a genius writer of our time. He took each of the chapters and shuffled them up with a trail at the end of each chapter that says, "Now Please Turn To Chapter..." and you just had to trust him. At first I thought it was odd, but then I realized its brilliance.
We are so used to reading books from left to right. We always know when we're nearing the end. I am the kind of person who likes to know exactly how long a movie is before I watch it, so that I can figure out the point at which things should start coming to an end.
With the chapters being shuffled around I never knew when the book was going to end or how far I had read so far. I just had to keep going. And even though I had read the book before it's been long enough that it was almost like I was reading it for the first time. There are two or three bonus chapters that are printed backwards. Yes, backwards. I tried to read them without a mirror, but it's pretty hard and gave me a headache. I can't wait to get out my compact mirror, like a child decoding some puzzle. My hat's off to you, Mr. Palahniuk! Please print more books like this in the future....more

I just finished the book last night and am still unsure of how I feel about it. I have been a longtime fan of Chuck although I have not read his last four or five novels because I felt they were getting a little too repetitive theme-wise. I love his style though and I was done with this book fairly quickly, so that's a good sign. I like that it seems to be Chuck's first attempt at pure fantasy. Usually his books are so grounded in reality, but this offered a lot for the imagination to play with. I also liked the twist with the script at the end. The main reason I'm so unsure of how I feel is because it's "to be continued..." I don't know if I'll want to read another book in this series. Overall, it wasn't the best, but it's wasn't the worst either....more

This was a wonderful book that kept me laughing and touched me so deeply at the end. It's an incredibly beautiful book. If you read these reviews, Michael (which I'm almost positive you do), THANK YOU. I'm glad you didn't give up on this one. We needed it and please keep writing!...more

This book is getting a lot of buzz because of its outrageous and graphic sex scenes, which are totally enjoyable, but I'm afraid people are going to miss the bigger picture here. I found the relationship between Anastasia and Christian to be very real and very relateable. I have always been fascinated and curious about the BDSM world. It takes complete trust from each person participating and despite the pleasure/pain aspect of it in a way it becomes an extremely safe place to act out certain fantasies and past hurts.
I have read articles about the author and she says that this book is fantasy, which I totally get. It is an exaggeration on a relationship gone wrong. The thing that really struck me is how Anastasia wanted so much for Christian to show her his love emotionally and how the only way Christian knew how to show love was through pain. This is something I struggled with in my last relationship. I found the way Christian punished Anastasia with his belt and tied her up so that she couldn't touch him during sex as metaphors for obstacles that my ex put me through in order to keep me at a distance and for me, like Anastasia, it was just too much to endure.
I loved the way the author showed how much they really cared for each other though. It was obvious Christian was trying as hard as he could to change his ways and be more sensitive to her needs. And Anastasia also tried very hard to go into his world and try the things he was used to doing in his submissive/dominant relationships. In the end, it was too much for either of them to bear. There was only so far they could go and it had to end. This is exactly what happened with me and my ex. We tried so hard to do what the other wanted from us, but our ropes just wouldn't reach far enough to meet.
I look forward to continuing reading the trilogy and seeing where their relationship will go from here. Maybe it will shed some light and maybe even a little hope on me and my guy. If anyone who has read this wants to message me about their thoughts on the book I'd love to discuss. I don't know anyone else who has read it and I am dying to talk about it!...more
