After finding herself the new handler of a legendary scent hound named Achoo, so named for her habit of sneezing when she gets the scent, Beka must figure out how to deal with her while also dealing, along with the rest of the lower city guard, with rising tensions caused by grain shortages and rising prices, and an ensuing riot that had torn the lower city nightmarket up, resulting in Tunstall, Goodwin's partner to be injured and taken out of acton for a while. Yet the importance of this pales as it is learned that false silver coin, called coles, was on the rise in circulation throughout Corus, threatening to throw the city into chaos. As the investigations began in earnest, the Lord Provost, Gersham, had assigned Clary Goodwin, A corporel Guardswoman, along with Beka Cooper to head for Port Cayne when it was learned that the coles were coming from there. Needless to say, this assignment was no cake walk as their investigations lead to the most influential person in the city... and the discovery that the deputy lord provost there is not as he seems. As Goodwin heads for Corus to make her final report, Beka continues her investigations, leading her to come into direct conflict with the Rogue of Port Cayne and the Deputy Provost himself... Now on the run, Beka still makes one discovery that seals the investgation, the location and ownership of the Colemonger's workshop... When reinforcements from Corus arrived, the storm broke, and the city was turned on it's ear as they did what was thought undoable. During the ensuing chaos, Beka once more comes into her own as she and Achoo run down the one responsible for causing so much trouble... and earning herself yet another nickname... that of Bloodhound... After the case was solved, the troubles have only just begun, as the long reaching effects of the grain shortages and ban on rye harvests, as well as the instability created by the flooding of coles into the monetary circulation of Tortall have yet to be fully felt... and a long, hard winter lies just ahead....

When a deep space probe makes a terrifying discovery that threatens the very existence of three high population and important worlds in the commonwealth, the leaders begin to make plans. Fortunately, they are not the only ones who seek solutions... Meanwhile, Flinx, still in search of the rest of his life after his momentus and eventful time on the far world of Ulra-Ujur is now back on Moth, The only home he ever knew. Little did he realize what events he would find himself in when he let his curiosity get the better of him and he accidentally interfered with an assassination attempt on a very bizarre creature, winding up with the creature in his care as he follows up on a few more leads, this time, they take him to the hot world of Alaspin, home of the miniture dragons, of which Pip, Flinx's longtime companion is one. There, his search leads him into the jungles as he tries to find one man. all the while, being persued by the assassin clan he had thwarted back on Moth. After he and his guide, also a 'dragonlord' having a large miniture dragon as a companion had set out, both Pip and the guide's dragons vanish, soon after, they come under attack by the short, monkeylike aborigines that inhabit the wilds of Alaspin, only to be rescued by the very man Flinx was in search of. Yet the rescue was not without it's price, as Flinx's guide was killed as they fled to safety. Their haven was short lived, however, as it soon came under attack by the Aborigines, and, as the situation was looking bleak, the three humans, Flinx, Skua September, the man flinx was looking for, and Skua's employer, the archaologist Hasboga had a very timely rescue by an unexpected source, two who had accompanied him in the trip to find the Krang, the human Bran Tse-Mallory and the thranx Truzenzuzex, both once very powerful figures in the Universal Church, and former stingship partners. From them, Flinx learned of the immense danger looming, and a possible solution in the form of a mythological powerful weapon developed by the same race that had risen to challenge the once domimant race of the Tar-Aiym, resulting in a war that wound up with the obliteration of all higher life forms in a large zone of space. And, suprising, the creature that FLinx was caring for seemed to be a major part of it, having given Bran and Truzenzuzex their first clue as to the race and of the weapon it had developed. Soon enough, the group was heading off planet in Flinx's ship the Teacher, and none too soon, as a warship of the Aann, a race of humanoid lizards vying for domination of the local galaxy had arrived in orbit. After much searching, they found the weapon, appearing as a very unimpressive artifact of relatively small size in orbit of a long dead moon. Once they figured out how to move it, they brought it to where it would intercept the incoming threat, then began to figure out how to activate it. Again, the bizarre creature proved crucial, as it turned out to be much more than what it seemed, and had activated the artifact. However, it did nothing, and was assumed to be a false lead, until the timely arrival of an Aann battlefleet... After Fleeing the scene in real space, Flinx and the others study the fleet and begin t ofigure out what went wrong... until the Aann, in their arrogance, had activated the device truely, with devastating and very spectacular results, effectively ending the threat that was incoming... Afterwards, when the humans and thranx were heading back to civilization, Flinx made yet anther discovery, as he was accosted by several tiny flying miniture dragons... Turning out that Pip, whom Flinx had, for so many years thought a male, was in fact female......more
To be rather honest, I found this book very lacking, the character development is shallow and the interaction choppy and disjointed. What I got out ofTo be rather honest, I found this book very lacking, the character development is shallow and the interaction choppy and disjointed. What I got out of this was a story of a very self-centered princeling who finds himself in more and more improbable scenarios as he deals with what he perceives as dream until he learns the truth of the world he lives on, with a rather inconclusive ending, much as you would find in several movies whose producers anticipate sequels. If it was not for the vague hint of a surprise twist ending that I read in one of the reviews, I would have deleted this book from my tablet before I got half through it...more
