I had picked things up here and there, read parts of things, read for school, read for work. I had watched the first season of the television series and had fallen in love with Tyrion, Daenerys, Bran and Jon Snow. But I picked up my Mom's copy of this while I was on vacation and I couldn't put it down.
This book made me ravenous. It awakened inside me the nine year old bibliophile who tore apart Lloyd Alexander books without knowing there was a whole world of fantasy novels out there. I took notes. I dreamed daydreams. I got wrapped up in the stories of the Starks and the Lannisters and Targaryens and everyone in between.
It says a lot that my Mom read this before I did, given that I'm the fantasy nerd and not her. But the fact that this series has gone "mainstream" and that "regular people" read it only strengthens my need to reclaim my bookworm cred. I'm quite happy that this is my first goodreads review, even if it is kind of vague and more gushy than substantive. Just you wait till I write up my notes...
