Kathryn Stockett is a good writer & this book has you hooked from the beginning. I think we all know the basic premise of the book, so I won't go into that.
It's a pretty amazing story and makes me more interested to hear accounts of African American "help" in the homes of white southern women, but from an actual African American's point of view. I think Stockett did a really amazing job of creating her characters & the setting and the abuse that the black workers had to deal with from their bosses but I think you can only imagine and research so much.
I would recommend this book. It's certainly thought provoking. I definitely want to go to the library and look for more books (fiction, non-fiction) in this vein!
(PS. It's a shame Elizabeth never could stand up to Hilly! Am I Right?)(less)

I think the author had an adorable idea w/ this book. But I think she tried a little too hard to have every single one of the characters be a special snowflake and it just got to the point where they weren’t really believable. Also, there were a lot of peripheral characters in this book!
I loved the idea of Fee, the Gothic assistant who also prays, but I don’t think she was fleshed out very well. In fact, I think I feel that way about ALL of the characters. They were a coloful cast, Jackson’s overwhelming sisters (“The Hens”), Emma’s well bred parents, the adorable Aunt Sophie in her mint green ball gown, the first wedding couple at the Tanglewood who wanted a baseball themed wedding, Anton & Pearl….so you can see why it would be hard to meach each and every one of these characters a colorful and dynamic presence in the book.
Some of the descriptions in the book were a little distracting, lots of eyes glimmering and burning embers of curiousity, that kind of thing. I also didn’t like the “twist” at the end, which I don’t want to write too much about, because it will spoil the book. It just seemed kind of abrupt to me.
The other thing that had some people talking over at goodreads.com…Apparently, this is chick lit with a little Christian fiction thrown in. Now that didn’t bother me at all, but I can see why some people wouldn’t like it. I actually like some Christian fiction, but when it’s a little subtle.
It was pretty subtle in the beginning of this book, but got a little more heavy handed at the end. I think if the author had found a way to send a message in a quieter manner people would have thought more about the story and less about the God thing.
All in all, I thought it was okay. I would read another book by this author. I’m not going to lie, I’m glad this was a freebie – it wouldn’t have been worth $9.99 in my opinion. This would be a good book for a day when you just want to kick up your feet, have something ooey, gooey, and sweet and do curling up with a good book.
i couldn’t find a good summary for this book, but i am going to assume everyone knows the basic plot of this book anyway.

it’s sort of daunting to review classics so i’m not going to a “review” so to speak but more just what i thought as i read the book.
i cannot for the life of me, remember if i read this in grade school. i might have picked it up at home, but i don’t think i would have finished it. i liked this book but didn’t LOVE it. i think it’s a great story and i love huck as a main character.
some might call him sneaky but he is just doing what he’s gotta do to survive and to help jim the runaway slave to escape to freedom. i think somewhere in the middle of the book – the whole jim escaping to freedom things get lost. that is the point where the duke & the king are in the picture.
boy did those two get under my skin!! you know who else got under my skin in this book? tom sawyer. i wanted to give him a good kick in the shins, and the pants, and a sock in the gut. good lord – telling jim he needed to cut off his leg and write a diary in blood and have a live rattlesnake in his cell so that he was more “prisoner-like.” sheesh.
i am glad that huck stayed level headed & mature throughout all of this and seemed to care mostly about getting jim to freedom. i felt myself feeling worried for jim toward the end of the book b/c tom (stupidly) wants to give a warning to the family that they are going to let jim escape and doing that certainly added some complications to their plan!
all in all, an american classic that i think is worth your time to read. not my most favorite classic book ever but i’m glad i read.
i’m trying to read more classics and there is an abundance of free classics available on the kindle! i’m currently reading the adventures of sherlock holmes.

i probably could have done w/out the first half of the book. the idea of each chapter being 'named' for a movie was very clever but the stories were not really "about" the movie or only very loosey based around this subject.
i think a lot of the stories had the potential to be funny but fell flat. some writers are just laugh out loud funny and these stories were midly amusing. a few bits were really funny but not enough for the book to be rated more than 2 stars.
the 2nd half of the book (when he moves to california) is more interesting and i did like the last chapter quite a bit. also, the chapters about titanic were very interesting.
sadly, overall, i didn't think the book was too great.(less)

i gave this book 3 stars b/c i did enjoy reading it, and i love the setting of the story and the romanticism behind it, but i felt like the book was lacking something. it's kind of hard to put my finger on exactly what, but i was left w/ wanting something else when it was done.
i guess i agree w/ another reviewer here on goodreads who said that alice came into her own too easily, there wasn't much struggle for her after she was re-united w/ her half sisters.
i also found it hard to keep track of the story. and i'm still confused if griffin is related to alice somehow? i mean, if he was a cousin of the bonavendier sisters then isn't he a cousin of alice's? or am i off base here? i might have to read this one again and see if i can solve that mystery!
not a terrible book but not great either. i'm glad it was free! (less)

i really liked this one until about 3/4 of the way through. don't get me wrong - i still *liked* it but this was the part where i started thinking "just get on with it already!"
i'm glad the loose ends were pretty much tied up and i truly did enjoy reading this book. i seem to be on a historical fiction kick and this fit the bill nicely. :)
i'm looking forward to reading more books from this author.
oh, and with regard to the complaints that it was a CHRISTIAN book, i barely even noticed the references to god/prayer/church, and the references that were in the book seemed very natural and i would have never classified this under christian literature in anyway. so i wouldn't let that deter you from reading this sweet little novel. my complaints? we never really got to *know* the main character (ginny) or more of her aunt's history. i mean, there's not much to ginny's personality. as another person here on goodreads said, she is just in the novel - doing things.
there were several scenes in this book that were just unnecessary & could have been left out. like the pineapple thing on the train tracks, and the bathroom scene where she didn't know which one to go into.
i loved keith. :)
i thought the end was a bit of a copout.
all in all, i'm glad it was free for the kindle. :)(less)

This book is amazing. It's not for everyone. It's a little slow moving in the beginning but once it gets going, you are in for the long haul. This book really messes with your emotions - you are deliriously happy, frustrated, disgusted, annoyed, full of longing, sad, angry, scared....You are INVESTED in these characters.
It's an amazing story. In fact, i think this is the first time in my adult life that I used the word "epic" and actually meant it. This book is EPIC. Before I was even done, I promptly went to the library and checked out all the books they had by this author. I'm looking forward to reading more of her writing.
I urge you to read this book. I adored it, and I'm sure I can't say anything new that other goodreads members have already added. :)(less)

Historical fiction w/ a touch of Christian literature. I don't know if its just me, but it seems like an awful lot of the kindle freebies have something to w/ christian literature & they are not always described as such. I usually figure it out by reading reviews ahead of time. I don't always mind it (sometimes it plays really well into the story -- like in this book!) but a lot of the time the Christian story lines can fall flat.
I liked this book. It was interesting & I liked the writing. I don't know that I would necessarily rush out & by the sequels but if I saw it in a library I would pick it up. (less)
