"I soon discovered that one doesn't simply read Crime and Punishment or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. One reads a certain edition, a specific copy, recognizable by the roughness or the smoothness of its paper, by its scent, by a slight tear on page 72 and a coffee ring on the right-hand corner of the back cover. "

Wolfie Wolfie said: I love this quote.

In my secondhand copy of the Sacred and the Profane, there are markings, highlighted texts (all the less substantial portions oddly enough), scribblings in the margins, etc. And there is a quote written in pink highlighter on p. 67 from, what I can only presume, would be the previous owner, and I quote:

People
Are
Sunny
But
Stranger

This quote makes me think about that quote, and the history of that particular book and its owners and whatnot.
