Devin Am I the only one who feels that, though blood song is an AMAZING book...it doesn't belong in a list with books that are way more recent? It's a August book discussion, but blood song has been out since January, 2012. Just seems like we would have tackled it way before if we were going to and more recent books like rithmatist and promise of blood deserve a discussion over it. Especially since Blood Song is practically a "sure thing". "Meh, Maybe I'm nitpicking, but, I feel it harder to discuss a book that we all share the same opinion on, which is that its an excellent novel.

Liosliath Well, last month's book The Whitefire Crossing was from two years ago and yet most of us hadn't read it before. I for one was very glad the group chose it, because I might never have read it otherwise, and it was terrific! So I personally feel the age of the book shouldn't matter. Also, I haven't read Blood Song myself yet but I know a couple of my friends were pretty meh about it (and confused as to why everyone else was raving), so opinions in the group might not be as uniform as you think.

Devin Yeah, but whitefire crossing was a genuine "under the radar" type book. While Blood Song has, like you said, been raved about and hyped for the past year on /r/fantasy.I'm not saying the book isn't worth a discussion, I just don't know if I would have put it on the same list as less known pieces of work is all. Even rithmatist is less talked about because of its recent release.

I just figured the goal would be to maybe discuss something that isn't already discussed every single day on the /r/fantasy,that's all.

Matthew If it makes you feel any better, Devin, I haven't read Blood Song despite all the hype, so this would be a good excuse to pick it up!

message 5: by Liosliath (new)

Liosliath Devin: ah, gotcha. I misunderstood, I thought you were saying the group should only focus on really recent books. But I totally agree about it being more fun to discover and discuss lesser-known stuff.

Michael @Devin - the other thing to keep in mind is that Blood Song JUST got it's traditional publisher release (Ace in the US and Orbit in the UK) so it really is new.

I also wanted to say thanks for nominating The Crown Tower - for the record, I didn't vote against it because I think it isn't any good - I did so because (a) I nominated Blood Song after all and (b) it would be self-serving.

Devin @ Michael I completely understand the traditional publishing release, and that it is new in that sense, especially with edits. I felt Blood Song was something most of the /r/fantasy crowd were well informed of, even if they hadn't read it is all. Blood Song was one of my favorite books I've read all year, and it, along with your series, are what I consider prime examples of self-publishing done right.

But while I didn't vote for them, I was hoping to see something like Promise of Blood or The Thousand Names receive a little more visibility and discussion instead. Mainly, if anything to bring something a little fresh to discussions outside of the reddit threads.

Sidenote: Really enjoyed Riyria Revelations. Looking forward to reading The Crown Tower!

@Devin, I think your response above likely explains why Blood Song is winning. It's definitely received much positive attention on /r/fantasy, and there are a number (like myself) that for one reason or another haven't gotten to it yet. For people that haven't read it, it likely seems like a good opportunity/motivation to bump it up their list. It's hard to resist when you keep hearing comments like yours about it being one of your favorites that you have read all year.

That said, I haven't voted at all. :) I think I would be happy with any of the choices. There are only three I did not already have on my TBR list (The Scar, The Cloud Roads and The House of Blades, all of which sound good)

And,there is always next month to try something different if this months vote doesn't go the way you hoped. There are a number that agree that something lesser known would be great and that may be reflected in the nominations/voting.

Devin @Lisa You're probably right. I mean, Blood Song was an excellent book, so it definitely deserves the attention and votes. I just want to make sure we get love for books we haven't heard of or doesn't have as much attention too. Especially stuff like The Scar and The Cloud Roads, which I haven't read yet, but are now on my TBR list as well.

I think the fact that Whitefire Crossing won last month is a good indication that this group is willing to vote for some of the lesser known books :) (at least I hope so)

Devin Fair enough, good point.

message 12: by Devin (new)

Devin I am really happy to see books like House of Blades make the list too, especially when I didn't even nominate it. It's a recently released self-published novel as well and hasn't been talked about at all by major reviewers/bloggers despite it selling well so I was surprised to see other readers nominate it.
