It only matters if the character is written well. You can have a heroine who's a whiny bitch, or a hero that's annoying as fuck. You could also have a heroine who's strong, funny, and epic, or a hero who's strong, funny, and epic.

I'm not really sure why... and so far I seem to be the only one who prefers it that way. :D
I love any well-drawn character, but I'd rather not have a cast of just a bunch of guys with no women whatsoever. That's always awkward.
I hate romance novels from the guy's POV. I don't know why. It just makes the girl seem 10x more annoying than she was in her own point of view. I noticed this when reading Intertwined and Beautiful Creatures especially.

One book I particularly remember the entire first third was written from the woman's pov and then the man suddenly showed up an went: oh, yeah, so not my type. Uh huh.
I agree with the above comments. If a book is written well, I'll get lost in the character regardless of gender. Though, as Marie pointed out, I can't think of a single book that I really enjoyed where there were all males or all females. On second thought, I take that back. The LOTR Fellowship was all male except for a few token females and that's one of the best series ever written.
Well, I did like The Outsiders. However, that's the only book I can think of at the moment that I liked with all male characters.

That's something I've come to realize. XD
I prefer a female protagonist as well. I don't know why but I guess it's because I can relate better =) x
