Tom Merritt Ladies and gentlemen, the July poll has arrived. You have just shy of two weeks to get your vote in, so GET IT IN! No excuses.

One note, Old Man's War suffered a crushing defeat last laser poll, so we gave it the month off to recover. This does not mean you won't see it in a poll again.

message 2: by Zach (new)

Zach Bechtel I voted for Leviathan Wakes HUZZAH!

message 3: by Aidan (new)

Aidan As much as I wanted to vote for Leviathan Wakes (especially with the sequel just around the corner), I had to vote for Mr. Bradbury.

message 4: by Gord (new)

Gord McLeod I too voted for Mr. Bradbury. I've never read that book.

message 5: by Don (new)

Don McDonald Zach wrote: "I voted for Leviathan Wakes HUZZAH!" Same here

message 6: by Steven (new)

Steven I voted for Leviathan Wakes, partly due to the interview with the authors on the video podcast, partly due to the high praise Felicia Day gave to characters and world building and partly since it sounded like the most interesting of the lot based on their Goodreads descriptions

message 7: by Rob (new)

Rob Habaradas Voted for Altered Carbon, I thought it was interesting (and I don't have Leviathan Wakes yet and I wanted to read Fahrenheit 451 for Mr. Bradbury first). Though, any of those three will be okay for me.

Michaela Goebel I voted for Altered Carbon, mainly because it is one of the books that I am already reading. Not sure that I can handle adding another book to the list of currently reading :-)

message 9: by Paul (new)

Paul I went with Leviathan Wakes. Like some of the others, the interview with the authors piqued my curiosity.

Altered Carbon might be interesting too, but it sounded just a little bit ... stale? It seems like a lot of Sci-Fi is the same these days.

P. Aaron Potter Leviathan Wakes is absolutely my pick of choice.

Next time.
This month belongs to Mr. Bradbury.

Chad Leviathans wakes

message 12: by Ala (new)

Ala So uh...

Guess we're not doing the anonymous voting this time?

message 13: by Sean (new)

Sean before people start complaining...make sure you vote for a book that is available in the format you want :)

Joe Informatico I've been wanting to read Chung-Kuo for years, but I hear a lot of good vibes from Leviathan Wakes, so I'll go with that.

message 15: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Mcfadden Anything but altered carbon. The premise was good it but spoiled so quickly.

Adelaide Blair As far as I could tell, Chung Kuo: The Middle Kingdom is not in print in the U.S. (print or kindle.)

Tassie Dave Only "Leviathan Wakes" and "Altered Carbon" are available as eBooks in Australia.

I'll vote for "Leviathan Wakes". It sounds better. Altered Carbon looks a bit cyberpunky (Not my favourite sci-fi sub genre)

Tamahome I voted for Old Man's War...in my BrainPal™.

Linguana Zach wrote: "I voted for Leviathan Wakes HUZZAH!"

I am joining in your HUZZAH-ing.

I'd also read along for "Altered Carbon" and "The Martian Chronicles". So overall very appealing choices. My vote went to "Leviathan Wakes" though. I am super excited about this book.

message 20: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Estl They all look like great books, but in memory of Mr. Bradbury, I vote for “The Martian Chronicles”

message 21: by Everitt (new)

Everitt I went with Ray Bradbury, not just out of a sense of obligation, but because it would be great to read more of the classics with the group.

message 22: by Jason (new)

Jason Bergman As much as I love Chung Kuo, DO NOT READ THIS VERSION OF THE BOOK.

First of all, it's totally out of print. So there's that.

But more importantly, David Wingrove is in the process of completely rereleasing the entire series, with new material.

The NEW first book in the series is Son Of Heaven, which is actually Book -2, followed by Daylight on Iron Mountain (Book -1). The new edition of The Middle Kingdom is due out this summer.

Those books are decent on their own, but they really are prequels, intended to lead into the series proper. I have no idea how satisfying a read they'll be without knowledge of what's to come (I however really enjoyed both).

message 23: by Anne (new)

Anne Bradbury of course.

io9 LEVIATHAN WAKES is space opera for the masses-it asks for little from its readers other than that they show up and enjoy the ride, ... a space opera for the masses... ick.

Tamahome Welcome to The Infinity Thread.

message 25: by Stuart (new)

Stuart Any other month I might have voted differently, but this month it has to be The Martian Chronicles. Ray Bradbury was one of the best.

message 26: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu So yet again Old Man's War has been disregarded again.

message 27: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Kevin wrote: "So yet again Old Man's War has been disregarded again."

It's not like old man's war didn't get a far chance. It was on a previous poll and was not picked. I really don't want to see it on every laser poll going forward.

Tamahome Anne wrote: "Bradbury of course.

I think of Leviathan Wakes as 'T. J. Hooker in Space.'

message 29: by Arroyo0 (last edited 12 de Jun 07:47) (new)

Arroyo0 This was a hard choice!
I enjoyed Leviathan Wakes, Altered Carbon and Chung Kuo: The Middle Kingdom very much (never read Bradbury).
I voted for after some deliberation Altered Carbon, it's been a while since reading it.
Leviathan Wakes I just finished listening to this past February.
Chung Kuo: The Middle Kingdom I read many years ago and while I'd prefer to reread it, there is no Audio-book and these days my schedule doesn't leave me much time to read eBook/dead tree format.
Also the Chung Kuo series is in the process of being recast (Re-released) starting with 2 new book that are prequels to The Middle Kingdom
1) Son Of Heaven - February 2011
2) Daylight on Iron Mountain - November 2011
3) The Middle Kingdom - August 2012

FYI: the recast series will hopefully fix the rushed and bad last book (#8) The Marriage of the Living Dark that was ruined by the publisher forcing Wingrove to finish before he was ready.

message 30: by Todd (new)

Todd Huzzah!

Mostly because I've already read it and I want to get into an actual book discussion here instead of skipping book discussion because I haven't had a chance to read the book yet.

message 31: by Matheus (new)

Matheus LEVIATHAN WAKES!

Yeah, but there has been a fair number of cries wanting to read and nominate the book every time there is a selection for a laser book.

Frederick I voted for Leviathan Wakes too - it sounds like an interesting concept. I was tempted to vote for Bradbury, but I'm currently reading Fahrenheit 451, so didn't want a Bradbury overload...

message 34: by Kristofer (last edited 12 de Jun 10:32) (new)

Kristofer I would be extremely happy with any of these books except for Chung Kuo: The Middle Kingdom for the reasons mentioned above (out of print, imminent re-release).

Space Preacher Well, I just checked out Leviathan Wakes from library, so VOTED. I'd prefer everyone read more Richard K. Morgan, but I doubt he'll beat Bradbury.

message 36: by Amelia (new)

Amelia June Went for Leviathan Wakes, because I've read Martian Chronicles so many times my cover is falling off ;)

But I'm down for some Bradbury ANY FREAKING DAY.

message 37: by Turi (new)

Turi Wow, I might have to read all four of those (reread the Bradbury, it's been years...)

message 38: by Renee (new)

Renee Hail to Mr. Bradbury. All the others can wait for another time. I think a tribute book is in order.

Tamahome Ray Bradbury and Richard K. Morgan are a little different.

message 40: by Rasnac (new)

Rasnac In memory of Ray Bradburry, I voted for The Martian Chronicles.

message 41: by Kim (new)

Kim Kevin wrote: "Yeah, but there has been a fair number of cries wanting to read and nominate the book every time there is a selection for a laser book."

The problem is that though those people are quite vocal they are only a minority. You'll find that the majority of people who vote don't comment on the discussions.

Having already read Leviathan Wakes and with the sad passing of Bradbury I thought it time I read more of his work so I voted for The Martian Chronicles.

message 42: by Jane (new)

Jane Higginson Leviathan wakes gets my votes I love the sound of it and also I dont want to incur the dictator ahem i mean queen veronicas wrath ..haha :P

Tigana showed up on several polls before it finally won. So I don't really see where you have a say is how frequently something is polled. That is for "the Dictator" to determine.

Not to mention we all once in a while live through a main book pick we don't like so no need to whine about it.

And yes, I am thinking of OMW as a eventually certain pick ... muhaha. Though really, I think you'd like it if you gave it a chance. So read it even if it never becomes a main pick. I'd never steer a fellow reader wrong on purpose.

message 44: by Zach (new)

Zach Bechtel I'll never read Old Mans War out of pure spite.. alright maybe when I'm old :)

According to T&V, you,me, Sean and a few others are part of some super secret organization influencing the polling scene of the book club behind the scenes!

message 47: by Joaquin (new)

Joaquin Leviathan Wakes was my vote but I would love to see Mr Bradbury's book being picked too , I guess that not many readers are voting for Chung Kuo's book , so it looks it will be a 3 horse racing and LW looks to be on the lead.

You're like the Varys of Sword and Laser.

message 50: by Joaquin (last edited 14 de Jun 23:05) (new)

Joaquin Just want to express my disappointment because 2312 and Wool Omnibus are not in the poll, they would get a lot of votes , I am sure.
