Nick I think that there are a number of UI issues more pressing than those above - I'd suggest reviewing and revising the shelf management tools, which need some work IMHO, as well as the individual book rating/review UI, which seems to change from page to page on the site, often asking me to, for example, review books I just marked "to-read". User testing with people unfamiliar with GoodReads could work wonders here.

Thanks for asking!

Rob The no-½★ stuff is really minor (esp. considering the presumed weights/definitions for the stars)...

I wrote a detailed discussion of some of the UI issues in April: http://blog.founddrama.net/2008/04/re...

Crystal Just got myself a Crack-, er, Blackberry, and I was disappointed the website doesn't interface well. I KNOW that getting it to work is complicated, but it sure would be nice since I no longer have a reliable computer at my beck-and-call.

Richard Hah! I've got twenty quick notes in my list of suggestions to make for goodreads once-I-have-enough-time, and your items aren't there. :-)

Jessica My email keeps bouncing back for no reason. This is my biggest problem right now for me.

Lil I had previously commented that it would be wonderful to have an author list as well as a book list - maybe someday

new_user It would be nice to see all the comments other people have left on my books or reviews in one section (kind of like our existing "comments" section on the home page that allows us to see our own recent comments), so that I don't have to rely on unreliable email notifications. That's really my most wanted change right now.

Lizzy It'd be great to have someplace to list author's in general that we'd like to read. I always have an author or series in mind and don't want to add every book of theirs to my list when i could just ad the author

Mike Bularz the new reading progress meter is useless,
1. it doesnt show up on things like bookshelves / profiles (it should be next to any page showing books we added) and it should be on the facebook plugin too, its the most interesting new feature on here too
2. it is almost inaccessible; you have to dig up the page of the book, and do some weird thing like edit your review or whatever digging you have to do just to update it

Kate Hi, I voted 'other' and here is my comment:

I wish whenever I see a book, I can edit this book (put into my to-read list or rate the book etc.) without go to the page. I think I saw this suggestion in the forum and I second that.

Keep up the good work!!

Gary The skip button/link in the trivia quiz should be in a fixed position on the page if possible. This would make skipping through the questions easier. It maddens me that the link moves its position on the page depending on the length of the question. Lets face it most of the questions need to be skipped.

Mysterious I'd like to only see updates on my TOP friends, or something like that. I really hate to un-friend people but the ones I'm looking for gets lost in the scrolling.

Dario Judicibus I voted for "other". GoodReads is really good and GoodReads team is really supporting. So I would like to see it to really improve and become a worldwide environment. To do that, it is necessary a more "global" approach by taking in consideration that world is big and does not speak and think in English only. First of all, it should be possible to search by primary language (either authors, books, and readers). Second, it should support names different from the typical US format «first»«middle»«last». For example, many European names have spaces inside the family name, or the first letter is not necessarily capitalized. Second, it should be possible, in case the book was translated, to add the «Original Title» and the «Tranlsator Name» fields, and possibly to give the possibility to link all books that are the same one in different languages. So, it is very important that GoodReads does not base searches on Amazon only, which is a very weak book database for non-English books, but takes advantage of other sources too, as Google Books and local sources. GoodReads has the opportunity to really grow by including Italian, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, japanese, and Chinese communities, just to mention fews. Internet is not USA only,it is world, as when you publish a site on Internet, you are automatically in a worldwide environment. This is my 2-cent contribute.

Been to have a look. I think I agree with pretty much all the things you've suggested there.

Skylar Burris "It would be nice to see all the comments other people have left on my books or reviews in one section

I would very much like this feature too.

Andre The bookshelf is really in need of some UI work and
it should be easy to search for readers with similar book preferences.

Debbie Moorhouse Librarians undoing each other's good work....

celia ♥ things have been erasing from my accounts and groups including polls. a week ago, me and my friends created an important group and three days later we were somehow kicked out. now that group has ZERO members!!!!! and it's impossible to access now! also, there are major glitches in goodreads. when a friend is no longer online, it says (s)he is!!!! what the heck!! and our group is supposed to b secret, but my other friend that isn't part of the group says she knows what we have posted on the group!

Pat Shackleford Adding Pseudonyms and aliases to a authors profile would be nice

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I can't say that any of the above are burning issues for me. For some reason my GR profile and "read" shelf changed a few days ago making it look like I haven't read any books since July or August. I posted a thread on the Bugs section, but the problem persists.

Hanika Cook Maybe there should be a section for books that one hasn't finished, so that it's neither "read" nor "to-read." And then you could write some fraction estimate of how far you got, or something. That would be nice.

Michael Economy Mod
hanika you might create an exclusive shelf (from the edit shelves page) and use that

Jessica Donaghy Mod
Cool ideas, everyone! For those that voted "too many emails," take a look at the many email settings that you can control by selecting “my account” from the “Hi [your name:]” drop-down list in the top right corner of Goodreads, and then selecting the “notifications” tab. You can change the frequency and content of emails received, or choose to receive no emails at all.

Virginia Henley I still haven't learned how to navigate the site, so I cannot offer suggestions on how to fix it.
I don't want to go through pages of emails/comments to get to the latest posts. It should be the most recent posts that come up first.
Virginia Henley, author of THE DECADENT DUKE.

Michael Rowley I 'write' illustrated books and have no place to share my images other than through a link, i.e. www.vizcabulary.com.

Alien Citizen I've definitely suggested that before so I third that one. :-)

Tarek Amr Ability to list all books, or books under certain category by rating, number of readers, etc.

mlady_rebecca "Too many emails" is under user control and I don't believe 1/2 stars is necessary. So under your choices, I don't think GR has any real things needing to be fixed.

Giving infinite choices, I'm most looking forward to series info and author pseudonyms, which are both on the list.

Emily I got 165 emails from goodreadsm in a month dat i was away and Wasnt exactly pleased by it.

1) Find readers with similar tastes.
2) Book recommendation engine.

Evangeline I concur with the wish to find readers with similar tastes. Perhaps implement a suggestions queue like what Amazon and Netflix offer (that latter not so well) that connects me with other lists similar to my own-- the "others who bought this book bought______" sort of thing, based on our ratings.

Also, I'm having difficulty figuring out how I can tag my books and sort on those tags, or create shelves-within-shelves. I've begun plowing through the feedback discussions to find guidance, and perhaps the issues I'm having have already been addressed. Nevertheless, the fact that I'm having to dig like this indicates the functionality (if it's there) isn't intuitive, and could use some help.

That sounds uppity, so let me close by saying I adore this site, and I'm deeply impressed by the work and dedication of the Goodreads team. You're awesome!

Michelle (Purr More, Censor Less) The advertising issues are driving me nuts. Auto-expanding ads, auto-talking ads, ads that jump around the page, ads that take over the whole screen, ads that delivery spyware/malware. Correcting the problem after the fact is not the answer.

Bookshelf management for groups does not have the same functionality as an individual shelf.

Ability to toggle sorting of shelves by alpha-numeric order or quantity of shelf.

Ability to customize a shelf view

A more easier/useful method of marking books swappable.

Half stars for book ratings

Half Star Ratings Tags If you're interested in a (GreaseMonkey/browser javascript) workaround that uses tags swapped into images to accomplish half-star ratings, then please see my post on page 3 of the following thread.
