I loved The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, a story about a young girl finding herself in a society and time that didn't allow girls to be "different." I think that girls today would be able to relate well to Calpurnia and her struggles to be herself in a confining environment. I liked the relationships she had with the adults in her life, especially her grandfather. This book is very accessible to the Newbery age group.
