In the case of war and peace, its not just the length that's the problem. the number of characters maybe off putting. Not sure if it can be done in a month. it took me all one summer. But its well worth the effort.

That, dear Susanna, is entirely funneh!

:O)))))

1109068 Eliot vs. Eliot. Hopefully it won't have an ending like Jarndyce vs. Jarndyce!

message 22: by Boof (new)

1253478 Wow, it really is so close for Eliot vs Eliot. Voting closes at the end of today so....who's it gonna be?

message 21: by Rebecca (new)

2108116 Wow, I am going to Duluth today. I guess I will have to buy both since its so close. Darn it :). Easier for me to get them while I am down there then send and pay shipping.

217534 Since the race was tight, I've recast my vote for Middlemarch. The more I read about it and George Eliot, the more excited I become.

message 19: by Rebecca (new)

2108116 Middlemarch looks great for dicussion too so I am excited about it too now.

2482609 I have withdrawn my vote for Trollope's He Knew He Was Right in favor of Eliot's Middlemarch; a book, I believe, was written for a group read and discussion! So far, the voter turnout is just about 30% of the total group members. Maybe we can do a Trollope at some future point.

message 17: by Boof (new)

1253478 There's still time :o)

message 16: by Faith (new)

1306990 I voted for the only one that I own yet have not read. I'm reading Middlemarch right this moment and I've read Mill on the Floss quite recently! C'mon Anna Karenina, you can do it ;)

message 15: by Rebecca (new)

2108116 Yeah Go Mill on the Floss. :)

message 14: by Lee (new)

846773 Okay Great, another exciting poll!

message 13: by Boof (new)

1253478 I just voted for it now, Lee, so it's 13 all. But yes, I'm up for starting if it doesn't win.

message 12: by Lee (new)

846773 Boof, I was going to say yesterday that it looked like Middlemarch was running away with it. I was about to start Mill on the Floss because I didn't think it could possible catch up. I guess I should wait to see the final result. If Mill doesn't win, do you want to start reading at the end of the poll?

message 11: by Christopher (new)

2482609 Yes, it looks like folks better make sure they can dig up their tattered and annotated copies of Middlemarch or The Mill on the Floss and get ready for some stimulating discussion with George Eliot!

message 10: by Boof (new)

1253478 And it's neck and neck for the two Eliot books with 10 votes each. She's a popular lady this month. Mind you there is still time for others to steal the crown - Vanity Fair and Jane Eyre are hovering in the wings too.

message 9: by Boof (new)

1253478 LOL Susanna.

message 8: by Susanna (new)

1109068 Mmmmm, peaches.

message 7: by Stacie (new)

137467 Whatever are you talking about? :)

Well, I wouldn't say 5 minutes...maybe 20. ;)

message 6: by Boof (new)

1253478 Stacie, you also read The Count of Monte Carlo in about 5 minutes!

BTW, I love the sound of War and Peach - where can I get a copy of that? ;O)

message 5: by Stacie (last edited Jul 05, 2009 10:30AM) (new)

137467 That was a hard decision to make. Regarding thick books...don't let them scare you. Once I got over my fright of the length of War and Peace I picked it up and found it to be a very quick read. And, a truly great piece of literature!

message 4: by Christopher (new)

2482609 There may be some "thick" books in this list; but they're also some of the finest literature known to the world! This is an awesomely impressive list of books. No matter the final outcome, we are all sure to have a fabulous read! Cheers! Chris

message 3: by Ayu (new)

257105 I do admit that thick books often scare me :(

message 2: by Sherien (new)

260861 yes indeed! I think les miserables and war&peace is the thickest book ever!

message 1: by Ashley (new)

217534 Not that I'm a wimp, but did anyone else realize that FIVE of these books are in the top 25 "Thickest Books Ever" list?
