I picked up American Gods in the Portland airport with a 5 hour wait for my flight. I was utterly captivated and this was the only time I didn't mind being stuck in an airport. Also, my first taste of Gaiman, as many have said, my first was my favorite, even though, by now, I've read them all. More, please.
It's been a while since I read Neverwhere, but I do remember that, at the time, The Marquis was probably my favorite character from the book, and that when the book was close to being finished, he makes his reappearance and, like the protaganist, I had an eagerness to descend into that world all over again. That almost never happens for me--not wanting the experience to end. Man, I should pick up the book and reread it.

No kidding. I had to go with Good Omens, but I love them all...
Since my main criterion for the books I love is the character(s), I have to go with American Gods. Shadow is one of my favorite people in literature.
As much as I love Good Omens, it is not fair to put it up against his other solo novels because it was co-written, it is not a "Neil Gaiman" novel. That being said, American Gods gets my vote.
I wish I could vote on a tie between two. "American Gods" is such a rich story, with subtleties that you can only catch through multiple readings... but "Good Omens" makes me laugh out loud every single time.
On the other hand, if we are talking strictly about Neil's books, it would be Stardust, because I am a not-so-closet romantic.
Good Omens - 1st exposure to Himself - will always be the favorite. Learned of it by listening to an NPR interview of the two of them. Made me late to work, and I didn't care!
I love Coraline! We just discussed it in one of my groups the YA Book Club, we also have discussed Stardust and the group loved both!
How come his SANDMAN comics aren't included in the poll? Those things are better than most of the novels they got out there.
Actually, it's a tie between Fragile Thing and Smoke&Mirrors... but I chose Neverwhere, because... just because.
"American Gods" is one of those stories I read over and over--and still find a new nugget of yummy every time I do. It is a constant on my list of top ten books/series I've ever read.
I love Stardust, but Good Omens was a contender too. I also can't wait to read his new one, The Graveyard Book. I read a short story based on it and loved the story!
