July 2013 Science Fiction Nominations
In this poll, there are 6 nominated books but we are voting on the description and not the book's title. So pick your favorite description, vote and the titles for all 6 will be made available afterwards. :-)
NOMINATIONS:
Creatures and Conflict - Less than 250 pages; less than $1.00. US & UK availability - On a small equatorial island, a ship captain discovers a sentient non-human species. As people start visiting and interacting with the island, the creatures spread around the oceans of the world; they learn human speech and absorb human culture. Initially seeing the creatures as inferior, societies attempt to social engineering to redirect the creatures declining industries to more modern hydroelectric projects, but the creatures decide, instead, to destroy parts of the world's continents, creating new coastlines and living space for themselves, triggering an interspecies conflict.
Myth and Consequences - Less than 225 pages; less than $9.00. US & UK availability - Thirty thousand years from now the people of Earth are extinct, leaving behind ruins and artifacts, and an alien species has taken up inhabitation on the planet. Frequent mutations in the species cause the aliens to be physically unlike each other. One alien goes on a quest to awaken his "humanity" by assimilating the mythology of the bygone humans, forcing him into confrontation with the "differences" surrounding him and clashing with cultural traditions.
Aliens and Alienation - Less than 300 pages; less than $9.00. US & UK availability - In the not-so-distant future, Earth has ventured into the nearby star systems, but it still comes as a surprise when the planet is visited by aliens with an advanced technology. A team of linguists are sent to the extra terrestrial home world to study the species; though experienced with other alien cultures, the linguists previously had the technological advantage until now, and now they must deal with the ultimate questions of humanity's place in the universe among a civilization superior to their own.
Nanotech and Knowhow - Less than 350 pages; less than $6.00. US & UK availability - Nanotechnology dominates the way people live. Glittering orbital cities, post-humans, and self-replicating machines exist. But when a genetically engineered human, designed to survive in the vacuum of space, steals a forbidden nanotech machine, the system escapes into the wild, and the knowledge how to exploit it could change the definition of what it means to be "human" for everyone alive.
STD and the City - Less than 250 pages; less than $5.00. US & UK availability - On a distant planet where hundreds of sentient species comingle in a megalopolis, a few civic employees keep the public safe from the spread infectious diseases. The consequences of space travel, mutated bacteria, and illegal bio-engineering make them very busy. When a highly contagious and extremely deadly STD begins to crop up everywhere, one city worker must cope with the epidemic and the growing suspicion that the plague may not be a natural occurrence.
Man or Machine - Less than 500 pages; less than $7.00. US & UK availability - In the near future, an experimental drug can link human minds together like a computer network. Some people want to make the drug more effective; some people want to prohibit it; some just want to make money from it; but some think it will evolve humans into machines. A young scientist, working on improvements to the drug, gets ensnared in the secret politics behind its creation and distribution, and he must contend with hidden government agencies, illegal biotech labs, and remote monasteries as civilization is set on the brink of explosion
