Man Booker Prize Eligible 2011

The judges have spoken, and this is their longlist:

Julian Barnes - The Sense of an Ending
Sebastian Barry - On Canaan's Side
Carol Birch - Jamrach's Menagerie
Patrick deWitt - The Sisters Brothers
Esi Edugyan - Half Blood Blues
Yvvette Edwards - A Cupboard Full of Coats
Alan Hollinghurst - The Stranger's Child
Stephen Kelman - Pigeon English
Patrick McGuinness - The Last Hundred Days
A.D. Miller - Snowdrops
Alison Pick - Far to Go
Jane Rogers - The Testament of Jessie Lamb
D.J. Taylor - Derby Day

Now let's ignore them and pick our favourites from all those novels that were eligible for the prize.

Please do not add books to the list unless you are fairly sure they are eligible according to the official rules (see: http://www.themanbookerprize.com/priz...). Basically, any full-length novel written in English by a citizen of the Commonwealth, the Republic of Ireland or Zimbabwe and published in the UK between 1st October 2010 and 30th September 2011 is eligible for the prize.

The real winner will be presented with a cheque for £50,000 on October 18th.

Ben Thank you for this! Most of the lists of "can't wait for" books of 2011 are all drug store paperbacks and vampires. Glad I am able to peruse a list of REAL books.

message 2: by Maryann (new)

Maryann Cole An intelligent book list. Thanks for putting this together.

message 3: by Derf (last edited Aug 18, 2011 09:43am) (new)

Derf Arinas Love the book! for me it's superb!! humpphhh!!!!! I can't really wait for the continuation... hope it won't be that long.. I am not a type of person who reads the book but this is the one that made me finish reading in 2 days despite of how busy I was..

More power to the auhtor Mr. Richard Mason..

message 4: by Esme (new)

Esme Mateu I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I particularly appreciate the author's humanity and his capacity to stir up emotions. Made me sweat!
In fact there is a "before and after" in my life marked by my discovering of Richard Mason's books. I have been glued all summer reading 3 books in a row!
Some passages are so vividly recreated that I find myself daydreaming so much after a page or two, It is almost like the words become images and I see the episode above my head and I can continue it until it gets tangled with something I have lived.
Thanks a lot Richard, please do write more! Esme Mateu.

message 5: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie thanks for the list. i was looking for a list of genuinely good books that are not all vampire ya books. Thank you!

message 6: by Sammy (new)

Sammy I have to add my thanks to the chorus of voices. After stumbling through seemingly endless "best of 2011" lists that were tributes to one, very narrow genre, it's a relief to find a list of books that actually interest me. I was beginning to fear that the art of reading across more than one genre was dead.

message 7: by Jacqui (new)

Jacqui Love this list. Thanks for some great recommendations.

Ranendu Sekhar Das A serious list for books of 2011 at last!!!
