message 1: by Thundrull (new)

Thundrull one of the better zombie books i've read

message 2: by Felicia A (new)

Felicia A There are A LOT of good zombie books missing from this list.

message 3: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline You should add those books, I'd love to see your recommendations.

message 4: by Stan (new)

Stan Swanson Although we can thank Max Brooks for establishing the zombie genre as the genuine article, he is not at the top of the list when it comes to good reading in the form of zombie literature. Check out the very best in zombie books and short stories by visiting http://www.BestZombieBooks.com.

message 5: by Leanne (new)

Leanne I'd love to see everyone's recommendations to the list too... always looking for something new to read. :)

message 6: by Defconfive (new)

Defconfive I agree, i'm new to the Zombie Horror genre and I can't get enough. I just finished reading Patient Zero and that book is one of my top 5 favorite books period

message 7: by JK (new)

JK The Walking Dead is the best work of fiction dealing with zombies I've ever experienced. Kirkman has developed an amazing story centered around a diverse group of characters. It's not about the cheap scares or gore of zombies that is seen a lot in other fiction, it's about the characters and how they change over time. It's a difficult thing waiting every week for a new issue to be released.

Not Now...Mommy's Reading If I'm not mistaken, I Am Legend (the book) featured vampires - not zombies - right?

Kelly The Black Pearl wrote: "If I'm not mistaken, I Am Legend (the book) featured vampires - not zombies - right?"

You're not mistaken, Matheson does indeed identify them as vampires.

You both are correct, but I do see that there are also a couple of short stories included in the novel. Maybe at least one of them is zombie related

In fact George A Romero claims he was inspired to create the zombie from the creatures in Richard Matheson's I am Legend. I have read the novel and it is my favourite horror novel of all time. The novel is accredited in part creation of the zombie genre. So if you want to thank anybody for creating the zombie genre. You have to thank both Romero and Metheson.

It is considered one of the greatest post apocalyptic horror novels ever written. It was also the first novel ever depict vapirism as a virus. Dracula created the vampire genre but Matheson's novel is the next greatest vampire novel ever written. It paved the way for other great novels decades later such as Salem's lot.

I recommend I am Legend for anyone. It's an amazing novel of solidarity and horror. an abosulte masterpiece.

Moisés Zamorano Hernandez Feed (Newsflesh, #1) by Mira Grant

My second choice

message 13: by Earline (new)

Earline The Black Pearl wrote: "If I'm not mistaken, I Am Legend (the book) featured vampires - not zombies - right?"

yeah that's what I thought too... glad I'm not the only one

message 14: by Mikayla (new)

Mikayla I absolutely loved the book FEED. What books do you recommend that's similar to this???

message 15: by Jennifer K. (new)

Jennifer K. Oliver I would absolutely love to see Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion on here. It's one of the best and most original zombie books I've read in recent years. I'd highly recommend it.

message 16: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Why are pretty little liar books on here??

message 17: by David P (new)

David P Forsyth I'm bias, as the author, but I would recommend Voyage of the Dead - Introductory First Look
It's FREE on Amazon tomorrow (Saturday 1/21) only.

message 18: by Mike (new)

Mike I know I am going to get flamed for this but there is no way in heck that FEED is on this list and Pariah by Bob Fingerman is not. I had to force myself to get through FEED. Pariah was my personal nightmare inducer until the final page was turned.

Mike Kevin wrote: ""Kelly wrote: "The Black Pearl wrote: "If I'm not mistaken, I Am Legend (the book) featured vampires - not zombies - right?"

I am legend did inspire Romero.

David P Forsyth Mike wrote: "Kevin wrote: ""Kelly wrote: "The Black Pearl wrote: "If I'm not mistaken, I Am Legend (the book) featured vampires - not zombies - right?"

It still inspires me. ;)

You're right, I Am Legend had vampires, not a single zombie in the book. Looks like someone saw the movie, didn't read the novelette, and just decided to include it.

message 22: by David P (new)

David P Forsyth I am Legend is as much about zombies as 28 Days Later. It's a generic term these days that includes undead, living dead, and terminally/homocidally infected.

By the way, Voyage of the Dead is FREE today on Amazon and near the top of the charts. I hope it floats your boat.

message 23: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Herfst I'm not sure how/why hunger games is on the zombie list ... any thoughts?

message 24: by David P (new)

David P Forsyth Nope. I don't get it either
Coincidentally, Voyage of the Dead is free again at http://www.amazon.com/Voyage-Dead-Sov... for another half an hour for the first time since I posted the message above. Spooky!

PS: I does have zombies ;)

message 25: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Stephen wrote: "I'm not sure how/why hunger games is on the zombie list ... any thoughts?"
WTF? also, pretty little liars is on here and uglies? What pubescent teen is adding these to a list meant for zombies? Really annoying and someone needs to be monitoring this better.

message 26: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Herfst Glad I'm not the only one :) I guess librarians should handle this.

message 27: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Ummmm divergent by Veronica Roth wasn't about zombies!? I wonder why it's listed? Unless I missed something lol I'm pretty sure I would remember if there had been any zombies in that book.

message 28: by Mouldy Squid (new)

Mouldy Squid Wade Davis's The Serpent and the Rainbow. How could a list about zombie books not include the work of the man who actually discovered the real world drug that Hatian bukor use to make zombies?

Also should be added: Conrad Williams's The Unblemished.

message 29: by David P (new)

David P Forsyth Thanks to those who voted for Voyage of the Dead and Flotilla of the Dead. Just an update that www.sovereignspirit.net now hosts a roll playing blog where survivors can submit post apocalyptic status reports. Some of them will be included in my next book.

message 30: by A.R. (new)

A.R. I hate overdone zombies, so my vote was a hard choice betweeen books not only excellent but written before the fad: Cell, Pet Sematary, Dawn of the Dead, and Blood Crazy. Any of these four deserved to win.

message 31: by Bernie (new)

Bernie Morris 'Fighting Out of Mobberley, England' by GB Hope is a different kind of zombie novel in that the zombies are machines and not really dangerous, or could they become so?

message 32: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Karsak Hi friends, I just want to mention I do have a new zombie book on the market, "The Harvesting," that people might enjoy. Take a look and see if its for you. Giveaway coming in October!

message 33: by Robbie (new)

Robbie Reading a new one right now (Alive Inside). I'll post to let you know how it was when I'm done... Will try "The Harvesting" next. Thanks!

♥ Ashleigh ♥ contrary to popular belief i'm not actually mad! WOW this list is incredible!!

i deff need to get my hands on more of these books!!

Finished "Alive Inside" - really good. I definitely recommend it! Now on the "The Harvesting"...

message 36: by Michelle (new)

Michelle I wish there was a "add all to list" button, i want to read them all

message 37: by Pablo (new)

Pablo Why do so many zombie books suck? Too many of these books are written as journals/diaries or with some other cheap device ala World War Z. Is it that hard to craft a narrative when people are getting eaten?

Cathy (cathepsut) There are zombies in LOTR??? Where? Must have missed them... :-)

message 39: by Coldcupcake (new)

Coldcupcake Costain Very poor Zombie list, I read alot and almost none I have read are on it and most that are are not Zombie books. Tsk!

Wes Remington I have just added my book Zombie Apocalypse: Combat and Survival to this list. Download a FREE copy from www.endoftimesurvival.com until 4/16/13!

Please feel free to rate and review it. Enjoy!

Zombie Apocalypse Combat and Survival by Wes Remington

message 43: by Mary (new)

Mary Ann Identity Theft is a page turner, and it is a unique and very creative addition to the genre. You don't have to read the first book in the series to enjoy this one, but you will be very glad if you do. Both books are memorable- both gripping and interesting.

message 44: by Sworean (new)

Sworean hurray, now with this and playing DAYZ standalone when it comes out, I will be able to survive the zombie apocalypse. first thing I want to have is a m14

message 45: by Rose (last edited May 09, 2013 02:23PM) (new)

Rose Wynters I'm not sure if I added my newest release correctly, but feel free to add it on! Phase One: Identify (Territory of the Dead series, Book 1)

Phase One: Identify Phase One Identify (Territory of the Dead, #1) by Rose Wynters

message 46: by Gerard (new)

Gerard I'm going to ask for help. I want to recommend a zombie book I've read but I cannot remember the title and I've been searching...

The world is dead: people, animals and vegetation. The main character is a cop (dead) who hunts the living and whose father was a famous hunter of the living.
Society is normal (and dead) with cities and cars etc

message 47: by Cherie (new)

Cherie Just curious... SINCE WHEN is Twilight a ZOMBIE BOOK???????

message 48: by Amy (new)

Amy Petty I Am Legend is a story about vampires, not zombies; so if this list is meant to recommend zombie stories, it is not appropriate and should be removed.

message 49: by Amy (last edited Oct 25, 2013 07:10PM) (new)

Amy Petty David P wrote: "I am Legend is as much about zombies as 28 Days Later. It's a generic term these days that includes undead, living dead, and terminally/homocidally infected.

Not really. Undead is a fairly generic term, but zombie isn't generic at all, and this is not an "Undead" list. But where did you get the idea that it includes terminally/homicidally infected? The first two parts of your definition is correct, the last is not; the infected horde has to be actually dead to qualify as zombies.

This is about books, not their movie counterparts, and if you've read I Am Legend, you know that the book specifically is about vampires. Even if it were true that zombie were a generic term as you claim, it still wouldn't be accurate to say that a book about vampires belongs on a reading list for zombie fiction. Matheson's book is not appropriate to this list.

message 50: by Randy (new)

Randy Harmelink I thought it was an infection that exhibited vampire-like symptoms, which varied based on their own religious beliefs, almost like a type of mass hypnosis?

In other words, the infection drove them insane and made them BELIEVE they were vampires.
