Bettie Lordy - I'm just fifteen years off the doubling the qualifying age here and I still clock up a couple of kiddy books a week.

But I get your drift. You want a mild filter to wean out the worst the ludicrosities that do the rounds.

So you have listed C&H, that means I can list my current graphic audio. If you notice not too many of the under 35's have cottoned on to graphic audios - they are not so blinking kewl as they think they are.

haha.

Anyway - good topic for a list - good topic indeed.

message 2: by Hayes (last edited Jan 08, 2011 01:43pm) (new)

Hayes I kept track on buggy's list last year, but I was so overwhelmed by all the YA Vampire books that I couldn't see what the other half was reading! Hopefully this will address the problem. And I most certainly did put in C & H, and kiddie books and audio absolutely count too!

message 3: by Bettie (new)

Bettie That reading quest keeps a good track on our books but I cannot work out how they are ordered - the latest doesn't just get automatically tagged on the end. *shrugs* not that it matters one jot, of course

lol

message 4: by Hayes (new)

Hayes Gave this a different name... still not thrilling me. If someone wants to come up with a better one.

Bettie Grown-Up Reads in 2011

*shrugs* makes us sound all discerning and stuff!

Thank you for the fuzzy
xx

message 6: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Thanks so much for starting this list. I am thrilled that the "under 35s" are reading so much, but the subjects of many of the most popular books don't interest me. It is good to see what others in my age group are reading.

Hayes Ruth wrote: "Thanks so much for starting this list. I am thrilled that the "under 35s" are reading so much, but the subjects of many of the most popular books don't interest me. It is good to see what others ..."

You're welcome Ruth! Question... why is that book called Matterhorn if it's about Viet Nam?

message 8: by BoekenTrol (new)

BoekenTrol I made this a list (might have been reading it wrongly...) of what I intend to read this year. I've only actually read 1 book so far.
Want me to change my votes into what I did read, or is it okay like this?

message 9: by Hayes (last edited Jan 10, 2011 12:03pm) (new)

Hayes No... no problem... then when you get to the end of the year you can take the unread ones off, and if you read others you can put them in.

And you're right... it wasn't really clear.

message 10: by Ruth (new)

Ruth "The same officer had also named it Matterhorn, in keeping with the present vogue of naming new fire support bases after Swiss mountains." p.9

Not sure if there was really a fire support base in Vietnam named Matterhorn, since this book is fiction.

message 11: by Susanna (new)

message 13: by chucklesthescot (new)

chucklesthescot Guess I better not post my list seeing as I read YA vampires and books that would be frowned upon by the sound of it...

message 14: by Susanna (new)

Susanna I think you're free to vote if you meet the age requirements.

message 15: by Hayes (last edited Feb 06, 2011 12:01pm) (new)

Hayes Not at all, chuckles! Go ahead and list them... because I know you read other things as well, and I want to see those too! :-)

ETA: How are you? Haven't seen you out and about recently!

message 16: by Renee (new)

Renee Whew! I don't feel quite as old as I usually do reading some of the lists! Thank you!

I loved the Hunger Games Trilogy and The Book Thief and thanks to my nieces I adore Artemis Fowl.

But a little more range is refreshing.

message 18: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Thanks for the list. I voted on the other one before I saw this one, but this one is much more to my liking. I do read YA books as well (middle school teacher-librarian), but that other list is filled with the kind of series I avoid :) Anyway... thanks :)

Invite your friends too! I'm always looking for more things to read.

message 20: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I find the list a bit confusing as I can't easily see what others have newly added to the list... just wanted to recommend "Little Princes: One Man's Story to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal". I added it to the list, but it's showing up last, and it's honestly the best book I've read in ages.

message 21: by Susanna (new)

Susanna It takes a few minutes for your vote to register.

message 22: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Sorry (I think I probably wasn't clear, as I reread my message)... what I don't understand is how the ranking system works. I get the obvious part -- books with the most votes go first... but then how are they ordered after that? For instance, all the books that have only one vote... how do you find out what has been added to the list since you last checked?

message 23: by Hayes (last edited Apr 27, 2011 11:12am) (new)

Hayes Lisa wrote: "Sorry (I think I probably wasn't clear, as I reread my message)... what I don't understand is how the ranking system works. I get the obvious part -- books with the most votes go first... but then ..."

Hi Lisa. The scoring is a bit complicated. Your first vote gets 100 points, your second vote gets 99, and so on. Then the points are added. So...

if 4 people vote for a book and all 4 people put it in first place, the book gets 400 points, which is the max number of points for 4 voters.

Then the books are ordered based on points. It's possible for a book that has 4 votes in first place (100x4=400 points) to be ranked higher than a book with 5 lower rankings (75x5=375, eg).

So all the books that have one vote go in the order of points given to them. My book is 25th on my list and gets 75 points, your book is 24th on your list and gets 76 points and so is ranked higher.

And you just have to keep checking back to see what has been added, unfortunately.

message 24: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Thank, you! I didn't realize that I was also ranking my books, I just had them added in the order that I read them. It makes much more sense to me now :)

message 27: by Susanna (new)

Susanna I love that we seem to be reading such a large variety of stuff.

message 28: by Hayes (new)

Hayes I think that's neat too... and I've already found a few things I want to read: The Tower, The Zoo and The Tortoise looks really interesting.

message 29: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Being a newbie to Goodreads, I have to confess to list ignorance here. I've looked through the books and not read any of them this year. Not good. What happens next, can I add some books I have read and then people can vote on them as well? Enlighten me pls, Hayes!

message 30: by Hayes (last edited May 19, 2011 01:57am) (new)

Hayes Hi Vanessa... This list is the place where you put all the books that you have read this year, not in past years.

**Click on the tab that says "add books to this list"
**You will see "Add books from: my books or a search"
**Under that you will see "shelf"
**Click on the arrow next to shelf, which drops down to show "all, read, currently reading, etc."
**Click on "read" and vote for all of those books

I started this list so I can see what all the older readers are reading, not just the YAs. Thanks for playing!

message 31: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Thanks! Have added all this year's reads.

message 32: by Susanna (new)

Susanna There are three books at the end of the list which indicate "-1" people voted for them; and indeed, nobody voted for them.

Should I remove them?

message 33: by Hayes (new)

Hayes Yes please... I've never understood why they go to negative numbers.

message 34: by Susanna (new)

Susanna Alrighty, I've deleted them.

message 35: by Hayes (new)

Hayes Thank you!

message 36: by Susanna (new)

Susanna No problem.

message 37: by Hayes (new)

Hayes Can I remind everyone that this list is for:

1) readers over the age of 35--I'm looking to see what people closer to my age are reading.
There is a listopia list for "everyone" here: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/82...

2) for books you've read this year (2011)--I want to see what's popular now.

Thanks

message 38: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Hayes, I just found this list. Great idea! It's so hard not to click on all the great books here that I've read, but I'm being good and just clicking on the ones I've read in 2011. I need to come back and add others I've read this year, will work on it.

message 39: by Hayes (new)

Hayes Hi Kathy! Great news that you are playing too!

message 40: by Kathy (new)

Kathy I probably need to spend a little more time reading than being on here, but it's so interesting seeing what everyone else is reading, too. Good to be aboard!

message 41: by Louise (new)

Louise Hi, I'm only 34, but will join this list anyway :-) Great to have a list not so dominated by YA - it was a good place to find new titles for my TBR pile.

message 44: by Hayes (last edited Jul 12, 2011 11:38pm) (new)

Hayes I fear that there has been some spamming of this list... what does everyone think?

Should I leave things the way they are or should I remove the offending book(s)?

Carla Hayes wrote: "I fear that there has been some spamming of this list... what does everyone think?

Why do you think there's been spamming? I've added some YA books, but I actually have read them this year, and I really am 39.

message 46: by Hayes (new)

Hayes No, no, Carla.... not to worry. There is a book which has been voted for by its author and by several people who are most certainly in their 20s or younger.

message 47: by Carla (new)

*whew* :) Yeah, I say delete.

message 48: by Hayes (new)

Hayes What does everyone else think?

I thought I would remove it and then let the "legitimate" voters (those who are over 35 and who have actually read the book this year) vote for it again, but I don't want to be too hasty.

Renee Hayes wrote: "What does everyone else think?

Hm, just so I know which book I may or may not want to vote for (and because I'm a little peevish in my oldish age) I say OUT them and then OUST them. I could ask my teenage nieces and nephew if that makes me an old crank. But I'm afraid the answer would be yes. (Said with love, no doubt. They're so tolerant of their old aunt!)
